MATH1050 ASSIGNMENT 2

Complete the following problems, showing full working. Submit your solutions into the as-
signment submission box on level three of the Priestley (Mathematics) Building (67). You must
include the cover sheet which will be emailed to you. Late assignments will be accepted only
with a medical certicate or evidence of other exceptional circumstances. See Section 6 of the
course prole for more details. Each of the four assignments will contribute 3% towards your
nal grade. Although you are encouraged to discuss the assignment questions with your peers,
your written assignment must be your own work. Solutions to the assignment will be available
approximately one to two weeks after the due date. Please scan your assignments for your records
prior to submission via the electronic assignment submission system. Due date: Monday,
26/03/2018, 5 pm. This assignment will be marked out of 24. There are six questions. Each

question carries 4 marks.

Covering Chapters 3, 4 and 5 of the workbook:

(1) A 2 kg bowling ball, A, and a 3 kg bowling ball, B, are traveling on an a
collision course. Initially, Ball A is traveling at 10 m/s in the direction of the
positive x axis, while Ball B is moving at 6 m/s towards their collision point
in a direction of π6 counterclockwise from the x axis. After the collision,
Ball A will travel at 8 m/s in a direction of 2π 9
counterclockwise from the
x axis. Determine the velocity of Ball B after the collision.
(2) Sonia needs to open a water valve with a 3 cm long handle. Sue usually
opens the valve and being stronger than Sonia, Sue can open the valve by
applying a force of 120 Newtons. However, Sue is at work so Sonia must
open the valve. The problem is that Sonia is only capable of applying a force
of 25 Newtons. Sonia telephones Sue to ask for advice. Sue suggest placing
a metal pipe over the end of the valve to increase her torque. Determine
how long that pipe must be.
(3) Consider the equation x4 + 4x2 + 2 = 0.
(a) Determine the number of x ∈ C satisfying this equation. How many
are distinct?
(b) Find all of the x ∈ C satisfying this equation.
(c) Express the above solutions in polar form.
(d) For one of the solutions x, nd the exact value of x55 and determine
the modulus of x55 .
