1. Raise the front of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations (see SAFETY
STANDS ).
2. Remove the wheel nuts (A) and front wheel.

3. Remove the brake hose mounting bolt (A).

4. Remove the brake caliper bracket mounting bolts (B), and remove the caliper assembly (C) from the
knuckle. To prevent damage to the caliper assembly or brake hose, use a short piece of wire to hang
the caliper assembly from the undercarriage. Do not twist the brake hose excessively.
5. Raise the stake (A), then remove the spindle nut (B).

6. Remove the brake disc (see FRONT BRAKE DISC REPLACEMENT ).


7. Remove the wheel sensor (A) from the knuckle (B). Do not disconnect the wheel sensor connector.

8. Remove the cotter pin (A) from the tie-rod end ball joint, then remove the nut (B).

NOTE: During installation, install the new cotter pin after tightening the nut,
and bend its end as shown.

9. Disconnect the tie-rod ball joint from the knuckle using the ball joint remover (see BALL JOINT
REMOVAL ).
10. Remove the lock pin (A) from the lower arm ball joint, then remove the nut.

NOTE: During installation, install the new lock pin after tightening the new
castle nut.

11. Disconnect the lower ball joint from the knuckle using the ball joint remover (see BALL JOINT
REMOVAL ).
12. Remove the damper pinch bolts (A) and flange nuts (B) while holding the damper pinch bolt with a
wrench.

NOTE: During installation, install new damper pinch bolts and new flange nuts.

13. Remove the driveshaft outboard joint (C) from the knuckle (D) by tapping the driveshaft end (E) with
a soft face hammer while drawing the hub outward, then remove the knuckle.

NOTE: l Do not pull the driveshaft end outward. The inner driveshaft joint
may come apart.
l During installation, apply grease to the mating surface of the
wheel bearing and driveshaft outboard joint: M/T model (see step
1 on M/T MODEL ) , A/T model (see step 1 onA/T MODEL .

14. Install the knuckle/hub in the reverse order of removal, and note these items:
l Be careful not to damage the ball joint boot when installing the knuckle.

l Before connecting the lower ball joint to the knuckle, degrease the threaded section and tapered
portion of the ball joint pin, the lower arm connecting hole, the threaded section and mating
surface of the castle nut.
l First install all the components and lightly tighten the bolts and nuts, then raise the suspension
to load it with the vehicle's weight before fully tightening to the specified torque values.
l Tighten all mounting hardware to the specified torque values.

l Torque the castle nut to the lower torque specification, then tighten it only far enough to align
the slot with the ball joint pin hole. Do not align the castle nut by loosening it.
l Use a new spindle nut on reassembly.

l Before installing the spindle nut, apply a small amount of engine oil to the seating surface of the
nut. After tightening, use a drift to stake the spindle nut shoulder against the driveshaft.
l Before installing the brake disc, clean the mating surface of the front hub and the inside of the
brake disc.
l Before installing the wheel, clean the mating surface of the brake disc and the inside of the
wheel.
l Check the wheel alignment, and adjust it if necessary (see WHEEL ALIGNMENT ).

WHEEL BEARING REPLACEMENT

1. Separate the hub (A) from the knuckle (B) using the special tool and a hydraulic press. Hold the
knuckle with the attachment (C) of the hydraulic press or equivalent tool. Be careful not to deform the
splash guard. Hold onto the hub to keep it from falling when pressed clear.

2. Press the wheel bearing inner race (A) off of the hub (B) using the special tool, a commercially
available bearing separator (C), and a press.

3. Remove the splash guard (A) and the snap ring (B) from the knuckle (C).

4. Check the knuckle ring (A) for damage or deformation, and replace it if necessary.

NOTE: l During installation, install the new knuckle ring.


l Before installing the knuckle ring, clean the mating surface of the
knuckle.
l Make sure to align the cutout portion (B) on the knuckle ring with
the cutout portion (C) on the knuckle when installing it.
l Be careful not to damage or deform the ring when installing it.
l Make sure there is no gap between the mating surfaces of the
knuckle ring and the knuckle.

5. Press the wheel bearing (A) out of the knuckle (B) using the special tools and a press.

6. Wash the knuckle and hub thoroughly in high flash point solvent before reassembly.
7. Press a new wheel bearing (A) into the knuckle (B) using the old bearing (C), a steel plate (D), the
special tools, and a press.

NOTE: l Install the wheel bearing with the wheel sensor magnetic encoder
(E) (brown color), toward the inside of the knuckle.
l Remove any oil, grease, dust, metal debris, and other foreign
material from the encoder surface.
l Keep all magnetic tools away from the encoder surface.
l Be careful not to damage the magnetic encoder surface when you
insert the wheel bearing.

8. Install the snap ring (A) securely in the knuckle (B).

9. Install the splash guard (C), and tighten the screws (D) to the specified torque value.
10. Install the hub (A) onto the knuckle (B) using the special tools shown and a hydraulic press. Be
careful not to distort the splash guard (C).

BALL JOINT BOOT REPLACEMENT


Special Tools Required

Oil Seal Driver 37.8 mm 07974-6790000

1. Remove the lower arm (see LOWER ARM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION).


2. Remove the boot.

3. Pack the interior and lip (A) of a new boot with grease. Keep the grease off of the boot-to-lower arm
mating surfaces (B).

4. Wipe the grease off the tapered portion of the pin (C), and pack fresh grease into the base (D). Do not
let dirt or other foreign materials get into the boot.
5. Install the boot on the ball joint, then squeeze it gently to force out any air.
6. Press the boot with the special tool until the bottom seats on the lower arm (A) all the way around.

7. After installing a boot, wipe any grease off the exposed portion of the ball joint pin.
8. Install the lower arm (see LOWER ARM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION).

STABILIZER LINK REMOVAL/INSTALLATION


1. Raise the front of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations (see SAFETY
STANDS ).
2. Remove the front wheel.
3. Remove the self-locking nut (A) and the flange nut (B) while holding the respective joint pin (C) with
a hex wrench (D), then remove the stabilizer link (E).

4. Install the stabilizer link on the stabilizer bar (F) and damper (G) with the joint pins set at the center of
their range of movement.

NOTE: The left stabilizer link has a yellow paint mark (H), while the right
stabilizer link has a white paint mark.

5. Install a new self-locking nut and a new flange nut, and lightly tighten them.
6. Tighten the self-locking nut and the flange nut to the specified torque values while holding the
respective joint pin with a hex wrench.
7. Reinstall all removed parts, and test-drive the vehicle.

STABILIZER BAR REPLACEMENT


1. Raise the front of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations (see SAFETY
STANDS ).
2. Remove the front wheels.
3. Disconnect both stabilizer links from the stabilizer bar (see STABILIZER BAR REPLACEMENT).
4. Remove the front subframe from the body (see REMOVAL ).
5. Remove the flange bolts (A) and the bushing holders (B), then remove the bushings (C) and the
stabilizer bar (D) from the front subframe (E).

6. Install the stabilizer bar in the reverse order of removal, and note these items:
l Note the right and left direction of the stabilizer bar.

l Align the paint marks (F) on the stabilizer bar with the sides of the bushings.

l Note the fore/aft direction of the bushing.

l Refer to the stabilizer link removal/installation to connect the stabilizer bar to the links (see
STABILIZER LINK REMOVAL/INSTALLATION).
l Check the wheel alignment, and adjust it if necessary (see WHEEL ALIGNMENT ).

LOWER ARM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION


Special Tools Required

l Ball joint thread protector, 12 mm 07AAF-SDAA100


l Ball joint remover, 28 mm 07MAC-SL0A202

1. Raise the front of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations (see SAFETY
STANDS ).
2. Remove the front wheel.
3. Remove the front splash shield (see SPLASH SHIELD REPLACEMENT ).
4. Remove the lock pin (A) from the lower arm ball joint, then remove the nut.

NOTE: During installation, install the new lock pin after tightening the new
castle nut.

5. Disconnect the lower ball joint from the knuckle using the ball joint remover (see BALL JOINT
REMOVAL ).

NOTE: When removing the lower ball joint, do not pull the driveshaft end
outward. The inner driveshaft joint may come apart.

6. Remove the lower arm mounting bolts, then remove the lower arm (A) from the front subframe.

NOTE: During installation, install new mounting bolts.

7. Install the lower arm in the reverse order of removal, and note these items:
l Be careful not to damage the ball joint boot when installing the knuckle.

DAMPER/SPRING REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION


REMOVAL

1. Raise the front of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations (see SAFETY
STANDS ).
2. Remove the front wheel.
3. Disconnect the stabilizer link from the damper (see STABILIZER LINK
REMOVAL/INSTALLATION).
4. Remove the wheel sensor harness clips (A) from the damper. Do not disconnect the wheel sensor
connector.

5. Remove the flange nuts (B) while holding the damper pinch bolt (C) with a wrench, then remove the
damper pinch bolts and the brake hose bracket (D).
6. Remove the cap (A) from the top of the damper.

7. Hold the damper shaft (B) using a hex wrench (C), and loosen the 12 mm nut (D).
8. Remove the 12 mm nut (A) and the wave washer (B), then remove the damper mounting base (C)
from the body.

9. Remove the damper assembly (A) and the damper mounting cushion (B).

NOTE: Be careful not to damage the body.

INSTALLATION

1. Install the damper mounting cushion (A) and the damper assembly (B) onto the frame.

NOTE: Be careful not to damage the body.

2. Install the damper mounting base (A) and the wave washer (B), then loosely install the 12 mm nut
(C).

3. Loosely install new damper pinch bolts (A) and new flange nuts (B) with the brake hose bracket (C)
to the damper (D).

NOTE: Align the pin (E) of the brake hose bracket to the positioning hole (F) on
the damper.

4. Install the wheel sensor harness clip (G).


5. Raise the front suspension with a floor jack to load the suspension with the vehicle's weight.
6. Tighten the damper pinch bolts and new flange nuts to the specified torque value while holding the
damper pinch bolt with a wrench.
7. Install the stabilizer link to the damper and tighten to the specified torque value (see STABILIZER
LINK REMOVAL/INSTALLATION).
8. Hold the damper shaft (A), and with a hex wrench (B), tighten the 12 mm nut to the specified torque
value.

9. Install the cap (C) to the top of the damper.


10. Clean the mating surface of the brake disc and the inside of the wheel, then install the front wheels.
11. Check the wheel alignment, and adjust it if necessary (see WHEEL ALIGNMENT ).

DAMPER/SPRING DISASSEMBLY, INSPECTION, AND REASSEMBLY

NOTE: When compressing the damper spring, use a commercially available strut
spring compressor (Branick MST-580A or Model 7200, or equivalent)
according to the manufacturer's instructions.

DISASSEMBLY

1. Compress the damper spring, then remove the 12 mm nut (A) while holding the damper shaft with a
hex wrench (B). Do not compress the damper spring more than necessary to remove the nut.

2. Release the pressure from the strut spring compressor, then disassemble the damper as shown in
EXPLODED VIEW.

NOTE: To remove the damper mounting bearing (A) from the upper spring seat,
attach a suitable attachment to part (B) of the bearing and push it slowly.

INSPECTION

1. Install the 12 mm nut on the damper shaft end, and set the socket wrench and T-handle on the nut.
2. Compress the damper assembly by hand, and check for smooth operation through a full stroke, both
compression and extension. The damper should extend smoothly and constantly when compression is
released. If it does not, the gas is leaking and the damper should be replaced.

3. Check for oil leaks, abnormal noises, and binding during these tests.

REASSEMBLY

NOTE: Assemble each of the disassembled parts by referring to EXPLODED VIEW.

1. Install the damper mounting bearing (A) on the upper spring seat (B). Do not tap on the damper
mounting bearing to assemble it with the upper spring seat. Push into the upper spring seat slowly as
shown.

2. Install the upper spring seat (A) to the spring mounting seat (B).

NOTE: Make sure to securely set the upper spring seat to the hook (C) on the
spring mounting seat.

3. Apply a light coat of silicone grease to the surface of the bump stop (D).
4. Install the bump stop and the dust cover (E) to the upper spring seat.

NOTE: Push the bump stop and the dust cover into the upper spring seat
securely.

5. Install the spring mounting seat (A) on the damper spring (B), then align the upper end (C) of the
damper spring with the seat stop (D).

6. Compress the damper spring.


7. Install all the parts except the 12 mm nut onto the damper unit (A) by referring to the Exploded View.

8. Align the bottom of the damper spring (A) with the stepped part (B) of the lower spring seat.

9. Compress the damper spring to the position (A) where the damper shaft (B) comes in contact with the
damper mounting bearing. Do not excessively compress the damper spring.

10. Install the 12 mm nut on the damper shaft. Hold the damper shaft with a hex wrench (C), and tighten
the 12 mm nut to the specified torque value.
