WHAT IS STATISTICS?
INTRODUCTION OF STATISTICS
★ Statistics plays a very important role in
assessing the performance of students,
more especially in describing and
analyzing their scores through
assessment activities.
★ Teachers should know how to utilize
these data, particularly in decision
making.
INTRODUCTION OF STATISTICS
➔ A classroom teacher should have
the necessary background in
statistical procedures in order to
give a correct description and
interpretation of student’s
performance in a certain test
conducted by teacher,etc.
INTRODUCTION OF STATISTICS
➔ The topic discussed in this
chapter are measures of
central tendency, measures
of variation, skewness,
correlation, and different
types of converted scores.
DEFINITION OF STATISTICS
➔ STATISTICS is the branch of
science that deals with the
collection, presentation,
analysis, and interpretation of
quantitative data.
BRANCHES OF STATISTICS:

★ Descriptive Statistics - deals

with collecting, describing, and
analyzing a set of data without
drawing conclusions (or
inferences) about a large group
of data.
BRANCHES OF STATISTICS:
★ Inferential Statistics - is
concerned w/ the analysis of a
subset of data leading to
predictions or inferences about
the entire set of data, w/o
dealing w/ each individual in the
population.
DESCRIBING GROUP PERFORMANCE
★ In describing the group performance of
the students in a certain test, the
measures of central tendency and
measures of variability are used.
★ Measures of Central Tendency are used
to determine the average performance of
a group of scores.
★ Measures of Variability indicate the
spread of scores in a group.
MEASURES OF CENTRAL TENDENCY
★ Provides a very convenient way of
describing a set of scores w/ a single
number that describes the performance of a
group. It is also defined as a single value
that is used to describe the “center” of the
data. It is thought of as a typical value in a
given distribution.
★ There are 3 commonly used in Measures of
Central Tendency
MEASURES OF CENTRAL TENDENCY

★ MEAN
★ MEDIAN
★ MODE
MEAN refers to the arithmetic average.

Example:
[82, 85, 91, 89, 80, 75,87]
Sum of Elements: 589
# of Elements : 7
The mean is 84.14
MEDIAN refers to the centermost score when the
scores in the distribution are arranged accdg to magnitude
(from highest score to lowest score or from lowest score to
highest score).

Example: [82, 85, 91, 89, 70, 75,68]

: [68, 70, 75, 82, 85, 89, 91]
: the median = 82
MODE refers to the score/s that occurs
most frequently in the score distribution.

Example: [82, 85, 91, 89, 70, 75, 68]

[82, 85, 91, 89, 70, 75, 68] -no mode

[82, 85, 85, 91, 89, 70, 75, 68] - 85

Find the Mean, Median and Mode

{89, 75, 53, 39, 89, 98,

74, 11, 18, 15, 34, 77 }
3 types of Mode

❏ Unimodal - is a score distribution that

consists of one mode
❏ Bimodal - is a score distribution that
consists of 2 modes.
❏ Trimodal is a score distribution that
consists of 3 modes.
