Season 1 When we compare the 95% confidence intervals for the population mean
5% CI for μ of killings with the IMDB rating averages, we can see that for the first few seasons,
the lower average of killings corresponds to a higher IMDB rating average.
s LB UB Season 3 has the lowest estimated population mean while the average
1.3026779 0.5056495 2.1610172 user ratings in that season are higher. This is possibly because towards the
I: μ ∈ [0.506,2.161] start of the show, relatively less significant characters are killed off, which
does not impact alot of viewers' interest. Towards the final few seasons,
5% CI for σ2 of killings we can see that the confidence intervals showing a higher estimated
population mean have resulted in higher user ratings. The reason for this
s2 LB UB direct relationship is the fact that as more important characters are killed
1.6969697 0.8515796 4.8920046 off towards the end of the show, users are more intereseted in watching
I: σ2 ∈ [0.852,4.892] and therefore the user ratings are higher. For insance, the second highest
average of the IMDB ratings is in the 6th season, which has the highest kill
IMDB Average count in the show. This is because the most important characters in the
8.85 show are killed off towards the ending seasons, leading to higher viewer
interest and therefore higher ratings.

Season 2 The relationship of the variance of killings and the viewer ratings, on the
5% CI for μ of killings other hand, is slightly different. Throughout the show, higher variance in
killings has resulted in higher user ratings overall. This is could be due to
s LB UB the fact that seasons with episodes that vary in the number of kilings tend
1.0836247 0.7281629 2.1051704 to keep viewers on their toes and result in higher viewer ratings. The
season with the largest confidence interval estimation for variance is also
I: μ ∈ [0.728,2.105] the 6th season, which has the second highest average viewer ratings out
5% CI for σ2 of killings of all 6 seasons, indicating a clear pattern between the two variables.

Grading: No submission=0 points, Late submission=30 points deduction. Other deductions will be
announced by the TA team. Note that Homework performance makes up 12.5% of your semester total; so,
sharing your work in any form with other students may harm your individual letter grade assessment.
Unacceptably high similarity between submissions will yield a grade of 0 points as well as possible
disciplinary investigation. Once you are finished with Homework, save your file and send a copy of your
workbook to your TA’s email as an attachment. Send it also to your own Bilkent-registered e-mail address
for future reference and keep that e-mail message safe at all times.

The website 'deathtimeline.com' provides the number of killings in the popular TV series 'Game of
Thrones'. Go to the site and get the number of people killed in each episode of every season into Excel.
Place your data on this sheet as follows: Consider the first 6 episodes of each season. Divide each
episode's duration into two halves and fill in the number of killings per half-episode on the right.
Notice that these 36 episodes (72 halves) can be considered as a sample from all possible
realizations (infinitely many) of the Game of Thrones universe. So, you'll simply treat the data you've
collected as your sample. Based on this, calculate the following:
95% CI for the mean killings per half, computed by using each season's data separately
(you'll come up with 6 CI estimates of mu, one estimate per season)
95% CI for the variance of killings per half, computed by using each season's data separately
(you'll come up with 6 CI estimates of sigma-squared, one estimate per season)
Then, go to 'imdb.com', locate Game of Thrones, go to All Episodes, i.e. the 'episode guide' and
retrieve the average IMDB viewer ratings for all episodes. An average rating is a number between 0
and 10. Place the rating data next to data of the number of killings.
Now, the question is (1) whether there is a relationship between the IMDB scores and the mean
killings, (2) whether there is a relationship between the IMDB scores and the variance of killings.
At the very end, insert a text box and report all your findings in your own 300 to 500 words, by
paying a special attention to the key technical terms.
Submission deadline is 09 April 2022, Saturday, 21:00. Your TA will send you a short message of “Ok”
upon her/his receipt of your email.
