It is difficult to put one’s plan into words. Most of the time, in school, teachers require to submit a
proposal when you present a project. In academic writing. It is called a concept paper. Concept paper usually
gives a description of the concept and the means on how to come up with the concept’s prototype. There is
also another type of concept paper which analyzes any idea, situation, or practice. In our previous lesson, we
have discussed the extended definition essay. In this lesson, we would focus on a concept paper as a project
proposal.

Activity 11. Below are some of the societal issues that we have. Provide a simple feasible solution that would

Concept Paper as a Project Proposal

The concept paper is not only an academic paper written for theoretical purposes; it can also serve as the
initial stage in the process of preparing a project proposal. People write this when they are eyeing for grants
and assistance for a project that they wish to undertake. It is a summary document that answers the why’s and
how’s of a project. Usually, it is four-five pages long.

ENG03 | English for Academic and Professional Purposes

Discussion and Activities:

X. Writing a Position Paper
From time to time, people need to take a stand. In academic writing, when you are tasked to write a
paper that tries to present an intention regarding a particular matter using logical arguments and formal
language, it means you need to write a position paper. While it presents the writer’s stand, make sure to apply
and follow the nature of an academic text (See CO1 Lesson 1).

How to write a position paper:

1. Explore the argument

Read what other people have written about it first.
a. Read widely about the topic.
b. Gather all the related articles and literature you need.

2. Create assertions
Assertions are opinions that people may or may not agree with. Assertion is not a statement of fact
or a general truth.
a. Write several assertions.
b. Negate these assertions.

3. Gather the evidence

Assertions without evidences are only empty remarks. It is imperative to make sure that each
assertion has strong and compelling evidence.
a. Never use moral or religious truths.
b. Consider that there are valid reasons for any argument different from yours.

4. Have credible sources

Never resort to your emotions when you want to prove something.
a. Use bills, laws, and declarations from government and international non-
government organizations, such as United Nations.
b. Use academic journals, books, and articles from reputable sources.

5. Refine the argument

An argument is made of three elements; assertion, evidence, and explanation.
a. Use further examples and explanations.
b. Contextualize the evidence.

6. Prepare for the opposition

a. After presenting your position, expect for an opposition.
b. Refute the opposition by finding flaws in their arguments.

6. Write the position paper

A position will always have a negation of that same position.

ENG03 | English for Academic and Professional Purposes

Always remember to provide a thesis statement and an outline before writing your position paper. Since a
position paper is persuasive in nature, check the discussion in CO2 module about how to write a thesis
statement for a persuasive paper.

Activity 11. Check your Student Handbook. You may access it here
https://www.mapua.edu.ph/About/Offices/OPD/Assets/SHS%20STUDENT%20DISCIPLINE%20HANDBOOK.pdf if
you don’t have a physical copy. Choose a provision that you wish to modify and present your arguments by
writing to the OPD. Address it to Sir Teem Torres (Prefect of Discipline).

Takeaway
As readers, we always have to be critical, and that involves the ability to construct cases and arguments to
address different issues. Writing a position paper, may it be for Model United Nations (MUN) or for
argumentative cases. Whatever the case is, always make sure that when you are proving a point, the use of
citations would always be handy. You need to look for reliable sources which support your claims to strengthen
your arguments.

YOU HEAR OR READ ABOUT SOME TOPIC THAT INTERESTS YOU (CALL IT "X"), and soon
enough you form an opinion about it. Nothing much happens until someone asks you a key
question, "What do you think about x?" This question starts many serious conversations, but
it leads to stating opinions, not to argument, which means a reasoned defense of an opinion.
To get to argument, you need a question with a shaper edge, a critical thinking question:
"Why do you think this about x?" That is, "What reasons do you have to explain and justify
what you think? What evidence do you have to back up your opinion?"

When you answer these questions, you are making a case, arguing for a position by
advancing reasons and evidence in defense of it. Making a case occurs in many genres,
including newspaper editorials, letters to the editor, blog posts, speeches, and personal
letters.
