English 10 – Quarter 4 – Module 7 1

What I Know
To test what you already know about composing a research report, answer the pre-
test below. Take note of the items that you didn’t answer correctly and gradually discover the
correct answer as you go through this module.
Directions: Write TRUE if the statement is true and write FALSE if it is not. Write your answer
on a piece of paper.
______1. Brainstorming and data gathering are two essential skills that you need to
develop in order to create a good research report.
______2. Simple research report is longer and includes more sections compared to
complex research reports.
______3. Reading and editing your final output will allow you to check the grammatical
errors, and other lapses that you have committed while you are in the process of
writing your research.
______4. In choosing your research topic, you should go for the most complicated subject
to impress your readers.
______5. Recommendations for your research must not be written by the researcher.
______6. Conclusion is the section in a research report which re-states how well the study
met its aims.
______7. It is in the introduction where the researcher states what he/she is writing about.
______8. Research objectives guide the study and ensure that the gained insights are
relevant and useful.
______9. Outlining helps you organize your thoughts.
______10. There are five important sections in making simple reports.

What’s In
In the previous lesson, you learned to identify research problems and write good
research questions which will guide you to accomplish your task in composing your own
research report. Applying everything that you have learned from Module 1 to Module 6 will
surely help you in accomplishing your final task.

What’s New
Directions: Put √ on the blank if the information presented tells about research and X if it is
not.
_____ 1. Data gathering is a very important skill that you must develop in order to validate
your claims in your research.
_____ 2. Choosing your own topic, identifying the problem, and writing good research
questions are all necessary to compose a good research report.
_____ 3. The sources of information are also important to support your findings.
_____ 4. Brief background discusses the relevance of the study.
_____ 5. Significance of the study provides an overview of the research.

English 10 – Quarter 4 – Module 7 2

What is It
Research reports are documents which include recorded data, prepared and
analyzed by researchers supported by facts based on the data they have gathered in a
systematic way.

STEPS TO A SUCCESSFUL RESEARCH REPORT

1. Choose a topic. It should be a subject you can understand and one that interests
you.
2. Make a plan. Map out the process and brainstorm your ideas.
3. Conduct research and take notes. You can use a range of resources: books,
periodicals, and the Internet. Take down notes without copying word-for-word to
reduce the risk of plagiarism. You can also conduct interviews or surveys.
4. Outline the project. This will help you organize your notes and thoughts.
5. Write the report. Use the outline as a road map.
6. Edit and reread the report. Checking and correcting mistakes are the hallmarks of a
good student.

RESEARCH REPORTS ARE USUALLY ARRANGED IN SECTIONS.

I. Complex reports may have these sections:
A. Preliminaries
 Title page
 Terms of reference, including scope of report
 Contents
 List of tables and diagrams
 Acknowledgments (thank those who helped you conduct the study)
 Summary
B. Main Part
 Introduction
 Methodology
 Findings/Results
 Discussion
 Conclusions and recommendations
C. Supplementaries
 References/bibliography
 Appendices
 Glossary
II. Simple reports may have these sections:
1. Introduction, including aims and objectives
2. Methodology
3. Findings/results
4. Discussion
5. Conclusions and recommendations
6. References

THE SECTIONS OF A SIMPLE REPORT

Introduction
State what your research/project is about. What are you writing about, why and for
whom? What are your objectives? What are you trying to show or prove (your hypothesis)?
Methodology
State how you did your research/inquiry and the methods you used. How did you
collect your data? For example, if you conducted a survey, say how many people were

English 10 – Quarter 4 – Module 7 3

included and how you selected them. Say whether you used interviews or questionnaires and
how you analyzed the data.
Findings/Results
Give the results of your research. Do not, at this stage, try to interpret the results –
simply report them. This section may include graphs, charts, diagrams etc. (clearly labeled).
Be very careful about copyright if you are using published charts, tables, illustrations etc.
Discussion
Interpret your findings. What do they show? Were they what you expected? Could your
research have been done in a better way?
Conclusions and Recommendations
These should follow logically from the Findings and Discussion sections. Summarize
the key points of your findings and show whether they prove or disprove your hypothesis. If
you have been asked to, you can make recommendations arising from your research.
References
List all your sources in alphabetical order, using the appropriate University of Hull style.

What’s More
This time let us find out if you have mastered the key concepts in writing a research report.
Directions: Write A if the statement is true and B if it is false.
_____1. Choose a subject that you understand and the one that interests you.
_____2. Outlining the project helps you organize your notes and thoughts.
_____3. Checking and correcting mistakes have no importance in research.
_____4. Methodology states how you did your research and the methods you need.
_____5. Findings give the results of your research.

What I Have Learned

Directions: Accomplish the table below by classifying the different sections if they are under
preliminary, main part, or supplementary. The first one is done for you.
SECTION PRELIMINARY MAIN PART SUPPLEMENTARY
Glossary √
1. Discussion
2. Summary
3. Introduction
4. References
5. Contents

Assessment
Directions: Match the research terms in column A with their functions in column B. Write your
answer on a separate paper.
A B
_____1. Findings a. interpret the findings
_____2. Methodology b. give the results of the research
_____3. Introduction c. summarize the key points of your findings
_____4. Discussion d. state the methods used
_____5. Conclusion e. tells something about the research project
and its objectives
f. tells about the references

Additional Activity
You are now going to write a simple research report. Make sure to include the sections of a
simple research report. Write it on a piece of paper. Your topic should be about a relevant social issue,
choose it wisely. Make sure to follow the outline below.
Section Content
Cover page Student name and assignment details
Table of contents List of main sections and sub-sections, with page numbers,
including tables, illustrations, reference list, and appendices.
Abstract A one-paragraph overview of aims, methods, results, and
conclusions OR one or more pages divided into the same
sections as the report.
Introduction Research aims and objectives, including any hypothesis.
Rationale for the study, i.e., why the issues for investigation were
important or significant. Might define technical or specialist terms.
Outlines scope of the report. Briefly states how report is
organized.
Background to study: Survey of key literature: summary of major themes, concepts
Literature Review How and/or trends. Situates current research in relation to existing
your study fits in literature; e.g., how it will add to current knowledge, or address
existing gap.
Methods: How the study was carried out; how data was analyzed Gives
precise details of methods and procedures, e.g., study's
participants, and how they were chosen; data collection methods
(e.g. surveys, interviews, questionnaires, personal observation,
case study); process of ethical consent if applicable. data analysis
methods.
Results* Presents results objectively, without discussion. Can include
explanatory or supporting data (e.g., extracts from interviews).
Include illustrations, figures or tables.
Discussion* (*Results and Discussion might be combined) Evaluation and
discussion of results. Comments on significant findings, and
implications. Might also include: •whether any initial hypothesis
was supported; •whether or not the findings met the aims of the
study; •a comparison of your findings with other research;
•limitations, flaws or problems in study design or methods.
Conclusion Clearly and concise conclusion to study. Briefly re-states how well
the study design met the study's aims. Emphasizes major findings
and implications of findings as addressed in discussion section.
Briefly re-caps any fault or limitation covered in full in the
discussion section. If applicable, suggests future research
directions.
Recommendations Summarizes and lists in order of importance. Might also be
(if applicable) numbered.
References Alphabetical list of references. Start on new page, attach to end
of report, before appendices.
Relevant and necessary material not included elsewhere, e.g.,
Appendices copy of questionnaires or survey forms; participant consent form;
large tables referred to but not included in the body of report; raw
data. Start each appendix on a new page.
