I chose teaching as a profession because I believe I can make an impact on children’s

lives by teaching them basic academic skills to succeed in life. I honestly feel like I am going to

help the next generation of children become successful academically.

It was my first semester at College of Southern Nevada, and I had an English teacher that

inspired me to become a teacher. She was so calm and wanted us to succeed and become better

students. She taught elementary all the way up to collegiate level and even though she already

had a doctorate degree she was continuing in school for a different degree. She also helped us

with any questions we had, explained every lesson to make sure that we all got the hang of the

lesson. Teachers like her made me want to become a teacher and make all kinds of student

successful.

I always had the ability and love to teach people new things or teach people things that I

was very proficient in. I have the skill of being calm and knowing that every student has their

own way of learning and that you just must be prepared for different types of learners.

My field observation prepared me for what to expect in certain situations within the

classroom. My class observation was kindergarten, so it helped me understand how much

repetition is needed to help certain students learn or even pay attention. It also prepared me for

all the work that teachers do for students and how much care and effort goes into helping these

children learn what they need to become academically successful.

I believe that essentialism and progressivism are the two most important philosophies

when it comes to teaching students. Essentialism gives them a structure to follow, and the

progressivism gives them a hands-on experience. Behaviorism is one of the psychological

orientations that closely fits how I feel regarding positive reinforcement and even keeping focus.
The second psychological orientation that closely relates to my beliefs is cognitivism.

Cognitivism helps with knowledge and memorization helping the student throughout their school

career. The invention of writing is what I believe to be the best thing in history for education, it

made for better and easier academic learning.

There are so many instructional strategies, but the one that stuck by me even when I was

in school were daily journals. The daily journal would help either express how we were feeling

academic wise, or it had to do with that day’s lesson. What is really good about those if that they

are forever, and you will forever have them and look back on them as an adult and it might even

influence you in your adult life. Another instructional strategy that stuck with me is reflection

essays. At the end of each week, we had to write on one topic that we learned that interested us

the most and talk about it, which I think helped students a lot more.

Understanding that every student learns differently and having different activities or

many ways of teaching that lesson will ensure that that student will learn it and they will not be

left out because they did not learn with the original method. Also. Making sure that everyone

treats everyone with respect regardless of the student’s diversity and including different culture

approaches to the lesson. Also making sure in the process that each student comes up with

different things and ways to learn and that’s ok and possibly teach other students how to do one

thing multiple times. Assessments I feel are very important in guiding the teacher to what they

need to do better on in the classroom for that specific topic.

To be a teacher you must be calm and patient. Teaching can be unsettling at times but the

other times you are teaching students to be academically successful one day. Teachers also have

to flexible with lesson plans in case a student does not fully understand the lesson plan in place. I

also believe that you must be able to teach effectively when you become I teacher because are
teaching next generation children. Teaching is not for everyone but if you push hard enough it is

worth it in the end I believe.

I am going to continue go to school until I can anymore and teach on a collegiate level. I

have been to a few observations for schools and daycares, to see how they run and operate. I also

have had jobs at daycares that prepared me for the teaching and the different kinds of learning

and personality traits of different students. One day I am going to be done with school and I am

going to have my doctorate in English working for a university.
