Lesson 2: Fraction, Decimal and Percent – Application

People who are in business have to learn about percentage, ratio and proportion. Partners may divide
investments, profits or losses based on fractional share of profits/losses. In business, we find so many uses of
percentage, ratio and proportion as we do in our daily lives. When we deposit money in the bank, the bank pays
us interest, with 1% per annum, 3% Semi-annually and the like.
To understand better on the application of fraction, decimal and percent, let’s discuss and study some
examples.

Lesson 2.1: Application of fraction, decimal and percent to Real Life situation
Remember:
a
• A fraction represents a part of a whole that consist of numerator and denominator (b). The fraction bar is
called vinculum which indicates division.
• A decimal is a fraction written in a special form whose whole number part and fractional part is
separated by a decimal point. It comes from Latin word decimus, meaning tenth.(a.b)
• A percent is a specified amount in or every hundred and often denoted using the percent sign (%)

Instructions: Solve completely the following problems. Answers are provided for you as
you guide.

1. Mercy earns a monthly salary of P13 500.00. She spends 25% for food 12.5% for
clothing, 40% for education and 10% for recreation. She saves the rest.
a. Compute the amount she spends for each item and her total expenses.
b. What fractional part of her salary is her savings?
2. Elena purchased 100 kilograms of ham at P150.00 per kilogram. She repacked them
containing 14 kilogram each and sold P55.00 per pack.
a. Into how many packs did Elena repack the 100 kilograms that she bought?
b. Assuming, she sold all the ham, how much was her total sales?
c. What fractional part of the cost did her gross profit represent?

3. The perimeter of a square is 6 5 cm long. What is the length of each side? Express in
decimal value.
4. A teacher spends about 6 hours a day in teaching in the classroom. What fraction of a
day is this?
