INTRODUCTION:

Assalamualaikom student. In this module you will study and learn to illustrate fractions and
decimals in real-life situations.

OBJECTIVE: At the end of the module, you will learn to illustrate fractions and decimals in real-
life situations.

INSTRUCTION FOR LEARNERS

Please Read

Learner you need to answer first the Pre-Test before going to other activities. Do the
activities in order as they appear in this module. Read the directions for each activity and
answer them in your worksheet.

Where do we see fractions in real life?

Fractions are used in baking to tell how much of an ingredient to use. Fractions are used in
telling time; each minute is a fraction of the hour. Fractions also used for the division of
monthly income of the family. Finally, fractions are used to determine discounts when there's a
sale going on.

How is decimal used in everyday life?

We use decimals every day while dealing with money, weight, length etc. Decimal numbers
are used in situations where more precision is required than the whole numbers can provide.
For example, when we calculate our weight on the weighing machine, we do not always find the
weight equal to a whole number on the scale.

EXAMPLE:

1. Nita knows 8 of the 25 students in her class. Write a fraction showing the number of
students Nita knows. Convert your answer into decimal number.

Solution
8
answer in fraction is ;
25

Remember the rules of changing fraction to decimal lesson 1 in your module page 1the
rules of changing fraction to decimal.

8
Therefore: = 100 ÷ 25 * 8 = 32 = 0.32
25

2. Tea friend zone shop owners, Charlene, Jhonpaul, Janzen and Jhonmark have collected
200,000 pesos for the capital of their business. Charlene has given 100,000 of the
capital, Jhonpaul gave 1/4, and Janzen gave 1/8 of it and also Jhonmark.

a. How much do Jhonpaul, Janzen and Jhonmark contribute?

b. Is there contribution exact capital? Compute using fraction and decimal.

Solution:

200,000 1 200,000
a. x = ∨50,000 jhonpaul contribution
1 4 4

200,000 1 200,000

3. Juan received meralco bill payment for the month of Marchcosting Php 1,500 pesos, for
the month of April he received monthly due is ¾ amount of March, then for the billing of
May received ½ amount of April. How much the total amount to be paid of Juan for the
month of April and May?

Solution:

¾ of 1,500 = 1,250

½ of 1,250 = 625

1.250 + 625 = 1,875 Juan total amount to be paid for the month of April and May.

PRACTICE EXERCISES 1:

As a student divide your daily routine in life in a fractional forms and decimal forms.

PRACTICE EXERCISES 1:

Solve the following: show your solution in the box.

1. Roberto walks to the school and he lives ¾ mile from the school. If he walked to the
school 8 days this week, how many miles do mark walk?

2. Maria bought a pizza and ate half of it. Then, she gave the leftover to his brother and his
brother ate half of it. How much of the pizza did his brother eat?
