What can you say about problem 1 ?

Did you find it easy solving the problem? Why
Let’s try to examine the problem. Example 1 is an example of routine
problem. It is easy to solve because we can easily identify the given and
the operation to be used. How about non-routine problem? Do you have
any idea on how to solve non-routine problem?
Let’s have an example of non-routine problem

Maine is baking 100 cookies for the barangay feeding

program. to make it attractive, she decides to vary the decoration.
She tops every second cookies with chocolate curls, then every 3rd
cookies with berries and marshmallow every 4th cookies. When
she has finished all 100 cookies, how many cookies will have all
three decorations?
How will you solve the problem? In solving non-routine problem,
you need to analyze and think of possible ways to solve it.
In this problem, I will use an illustration. I have 5 sets with 20
cookies per set making a total of 100 cookies. As you can see I
decorated t every second cookies with chocolate curls, every third
cookies with berries and marshmallow every 4th cookies. How many
cookies will have chocolate curls? How many will have berries? How
many will have marshmallows
1st 2nd 3rd 4th 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 1st 2nd 3rd 4th

Let’s count! 25 cookies will have chocolate curls on top.

25 cookies will have berries on top.
25 cookies will have marshmallows on top.
The other 25 cookies will have no decorations at all for a total of
100 cookies.

Can you think of other method to solve the problem?

Let’s count! 25 cookies will have chocolate curls on top.

OBJECTIVE: Multiplies decimals up to 2 decimal places by 1-digit whole

numbers.
YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:
 To multiply decimal number up to 2 decimal places by 1-digit whole numbers.
1. Write the factors vertically and multiply them as what you use to do in
multiplying whole numbers.
2. Count the number of decimal places of the factors to determine number of
decimal places in the product.

TRY TO DISCOVER!
Do you love your parents? What do you do to show how much you love them?
Read and analyze the problem.

Aling Marina is sick because of flu so she cannot prepare a meal for the family.
Mang Lando was too tired from the farm that he can’t able to cook either. Dina their
obedient and industrious daughter decided to cook a soupy meal. She went to the
market and bought chicken thigh for tinola. If each thigh weigh 0.25 kg, how much
does the 3 thigh of chicken weigh?

Let’s identify what is asked in the problem.

1. the weight of 3 chicken thigh

A. The problem can be solved through continuous addition. Let’s look at the following
picture.

0.25 kg 0.25 kg 0.25 kg

Each thigh weigh 0.25 kg. Adding the three thigh we have, 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 0.75
kg.
Since multiplication is a repeated addition, we can rewrite it as multiplication
equation: 0.25 x 3 = 0.75 kg Thus, the three thigh weigh 0.75 kg.

B. Through Number Line

0 .25 .50 .75 1 .25 .50

The number line shows three jumps that represent the 3 chicken thigh that was
bought. The last arrow landed on 0.75 and tells that the mass of the 3 chicken thigh is
0.75 kilogram.

Note counting of decimal places should be from right to left.

Let’s try this!

The farm has a shape of a square. Its side is 3.5m. Find
the perimeter of the farm. 1_
How many sides does the square have? 4
What can you say about its side?
How are you going to find the perimeter of the1_square?
4
Analyze the grid below.

3.5km 3.5km 3.5km 3.5km

What does each group of grid represent?

Yes, it represents each side of the farm, since it is a square then all the sides
measure exactly equal as the other.
To get the perimeter of the farm we can simply add all the given length of its side.
Thus 3.5 + 3.5 + 3.5 + 3.5 = 14.0 or 14 so the perimeter of the farm is 14 km.
That is how diagrams, continuous addition, and number line help us to solve the
problem. Another way which is necessary to limit the time of solving it and the fastest
way is through multiplication.

Quarter 2 / Week 3/ Day 4

OBJECTIVE:Multiplies decimals up to 2 decimal places by 2-digit whole numbers.

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:

When multiplying a decimal by a whole number, placement of the decimal point is very
important. If there are two decimal digits in the factors, there must be two decimal digits
in the product too.

To multiply decimal numbers:

 Multiply the numbers just as if they were whole numbers.
 Line up the numbers on the right - do not align the decimal points.
 Starting on the right, multiply each digit in the top number by each digit in
the bottom number, just as with whole numbers.
 Add the partial products.
 Place the decimal point in the answer by starting at the right and moving a
number of places equal to the sum of the decimal places in both numbers
multiplied.
TRY TO DISCOVER!

EXAMPLE 1:
Find the product of 96.83 x 61 = N
To find the product follow these steps
- line up the numbers on the right,
- multiply each digit in the top number by each digit in the bottom
number (like whole numbers),
- add the partial products and
- mark off decimal places equal to the sum of the decimal places in
the numbers being multiplied.
96.83 = ( 2 decimal places)
x 61 = ( whole number)
9683 = (1 x 9683)
+ 58098 = (6 x 96830)
5906.63 = (2 decimal places)
(final product)

GENERALIZATION:
Multiplying with Two Decimal Place by a 2-Digit Number
 To multiply:
 Set up and multiply the numbers as you do with whole numbers.
 Count the total number of decimal places in both of the factors.
 Place the decimal point in the product so that the number of decimal places in the
product is the sum of the decimal places in the factors.
 Keep all zeros in the product when you place the decimal point. You can drop the
zeros on the right once the decimal point has been placed in the product.
 If the number of decimal places is greater than the number of digits in the product,
you can insert zeros in front of the product.

OBJECTIVE: Multiplies decimals with factors up to 2 decimal places.

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:

We will be discussing here some easy ways to multiply decimals with factors
up to 2 decimal places. We will try also to discover how the process differ
from multiplying whole numbers.

TRY TO DISCOVER!
Do you jog regularly?
How far you had been in jogging?
Why do you jog?
Let us read and analyze this problem.
A jogger can run 150.5 meters per minute. How may meters can he run
in 35.75 minutes?

Let’s identify what is asked in the problem:

Number of minutes a jogger can run in 35.75 minutes
What are given in the problems?
150.5 meters per minute
35.75 minutes
What are we going to do to solve the problem?
We are going to multiply the number of meters he can run in a
minute to the given minutes.
What is now our mathematical sentence?

150.5 m x 35.75 = N

Can you multiply it that way? NO

Then, what are we going to do?
Yes, we need to right them or the factors in column.
Are we going to align the decimal point? No
Let us decide on which of this multiplication sentence is correct?

150 . 5 150.5 35.75

X 35 . 75 x 35.75 or x 150.5

PRACTICE EXERCISES 3
Hope the lesson is very clear to you now! To sum up what you have
learned, always bear in your mind that in multiplying decimals with factors up
to two decimal places, the following steps are to be considered.

1. Write the decimal numbers in column like whole numbers from right
to left.
2. Start multiplying the ones of the multiplier to all the digits of the
multiplicand from ones beyond.
3. Repeat step 2 to all the digits of the multiplier.
4. Add the partial product.
5. Count the decimal places of the factors (multiplier and multiplicand}.
6. Affix the decimal point on the final product by counting the decimal
places from right to left based on the number of decimal places of
the factors.
