INTRO

 The Internet of things (IOT) is the network of devices, vehicles, and appliances that contain

electronics, software and connectivity which allows these things to connect, interact and exchange

data using devices such as desktops, laptops, smartphones, and tablets

 IOT is a highly anticipated technological solution to management problems on the ship.

 IOT technology presents an opportunity to make shipping safer, more efficient, and sustainable.
 Using IOT in maritime transport will be the solution for many concerning problems as it track all
devices and shipments.

IOT technologies on Maritime Industry

1) Sensors technology
- Are a kind of detecting apparatus that can feel the information to be measured, and
convert it into an electrical signal , in order to meet information transmission,
processing, storage, display, record and control
2) RFID
- a kind of non-contact automatic identification that can
automatically identify objects and access relevant data.
• Its characteristics:
1. read distance
2. penetration ability
3. Large information
4. automation adaptability
5. long-range
6. stain wet resistance

3) M2M

- M2M is the general technology to enhance the general machinery and equipment communication
technology and network capabilities

4) Vehicle terminal - The vehicle terminal can be used for smart yard, intelligent warehouse, and large
vehicles such as container truck, forklift and tools.

5) Robotic Automation - In the shipping industry, robots are gradually being used to aid all the Activities
like packing, delivering, warehousing, inspection, firefighting, etc.

- New types of robots, called ‘mini-robots’, are being paired with the sensors to identify and record all
the data in the ship and work on it.

6) Cloud Analytics - Information from across IoT network is gathered and stored (often) in cloud.
The IOT infrastructure is categorized into the following three

types

 Network: The IOT works with a highly scalable wireless network

infrastructure and high-speed connections such as Wi-Fi, a cellular

network, Bluetooth, etc

 Middleware: deals with the installation of third-party tools to a network.

For example, a software that works as a connecting link among the IOT

components or devices.

 Cloud-based infrastructure: The cloud-based infrastructure is also

known as the data center infrastructure. It deals with the storage solutions.

IOT Adoption Barriers

1. Data privacy issues - IOT tools can probably collect big quantities of statistics security hacking
which is very risky.
2. Protection worries - It’s too complex to make a structure talk to outside network securely when
designing IOT business packages
3. High fee of implementation - Implementing IOT can be highly priced.
4. Uncertainty - insufficient information to do any solutions.
5. Lack of industrial technologists to lead the IOT program - IT has a lack in technologies that is
used to generate data for enterprise, so OT support IT to achieve IT goals.
Benefits of adapting IOT on the maritime sector

1. Digitalization which is transferring the port and ship into digital way is one way of creating value
for private and public stakeholders involved in the logistic port sector and carriers.
2. Constant movement of containerized goods between sea and land that results in Increase the
use of IOT technology in Ports to acquire data from the movements of goods/use of the
infrastructure.
3. Decreasing the corruption by achieving high visibility between the carrier and port authority
4. IOT Enables Better management of existing infrastructure like Reducing traffic.
5. Optimized multi-modal operations as the information among all the parties are shared among
the cloud.
6. Real-time analytics to run smarter operations, and automates decisions.
7. IOT technology provides port users with real time data on the status of cargo
8. Availability of port facilities, and enables ships and terminals to be part of an integrated
infrastructure.

Conclusion

• Using IOT in the maritime sector would be the solution for

many problems.

• IOT consists of many technologies that can be applied on the

ports and on the ships in order to achieve visibility,

sustainability and increase the country’s annual revenue.

• Applying IOT will come with benefits for all the parties in the

transport sector (shipper, carrier and the final customer
