TEST # 1

MEG 201
Materials Science
Date: 8 April, 2007
Semester II/ 2006-2007
Time: 1 Hour

 Please read the questions (total 4) carefully.

 Give short and precise answers, and be specific to the questions asked.
 All questions carry equal marks. The maximum points awarded for each part are also
given.
 Make full use of neatly drawn and properly labeled sketches. Show all the steps in any

Magnesia (Mgo), cupper (Cu), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and steel. 4

(b) What are alloys, and what are the two main types of alloys? Name any two specific
metals and alloys of each? 3

(c) list two reasons for adding alloying elements to steel? Name any two specific alloying
elements? 3

Qs. 3. (a) What is the difference between elastic and plastic deformation taking place in a
material? 4

(b) Draw stress-strain curves (on the same graph) for two materials A and B; where the
material A has higher modulus than B, while B has the higher ductility. Clearly label
which curve corresponds to A and which to B. 2

(c) Sketch a typical stress strain-curve and identify the location of u, y, E, elastic strain,
plastic strain and modulus of toughness. 3

Qs. 4. A tensile specimen of initial length 50 mm and initial diameter 5 mm yields when the
load is 8.5 kN, at which point it has stretched to a length of 50.1 mm. Assuming that
the deformation is linearly elastic to the point of yielding, determine the yield strength
and modulus of elasticity.
If the observed decrease in diameter d=-0.003 mm calculate the Poisson’s ratio of
the material.
Clearly show the units of different quantities calculated to solve the problem. 10
