ABSTRACT

Background: Teratomas are rare tumors consisting of three germinal layers. In

pediatric patients, teratomas are usually sacrococcygeal (47.2%), gonadal

(31.6%), neck (3%), and rare in intra-abdominal (2–4%). We present 4 cases of

teratomas in children (sacrococcygeal, ovarian, neck, and intra-abdominal

teratoma). This study aims to review the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of

teratomas in infant and children.

Case Presentation : We report four cases of teratoma. The first case is immature

sacrococcygeal teratoma (2 patients); 1-year-old girl and 7-day-old preterm baby.

The second case is immature ovarian teratoma (2 patients); a 10 and 11-year-old

girl. The third case is a 7-year-old boy with immature neck teratoma. The fourth

case is a 6-year-old girl with mature intra-abdominal teratoma. History taking of

these patients, they have same symptom such as enlargement of the mass. Five

case were noticed when the patient had palpable mass and progressively getting

bigger. One cases was noticed after birth. The computed tomography (CT) scan of

these cases showed a mass as a part of teratoma and confirmed with pathological

anatomy. Five cases were immature, and one case was mature teratoma. All
patients underwent surgical excision with good outcome, unfortunately one

patient died due to respiratory failure caused by prematurity.

Conclusion: Teratomas can occur in various sites and organs in infant and

children. An early diagnosis of teratomas is leading us to a definitive therapy and

showed a good result, with low rates of complication.
