10 Steps of Setting Out A Building :

1) Make sure you know your boundaries and your building lines
 Identify the right block of land.
 Clearing the site by removing machinery and hazardous substances.

2) Prepare the necessary equipment before commencing

 board 2500 x 150 x 25 mm
 peg 50 x 50 mm
 plumbs
 spirit level
 measuring tape
 nails
 hammer
 string lines

3) Establish a datum peg where it will not be disturbed

 Used as a starting point for measuring the position
 By using a datum level as a reference point in construction, we can ensure that features
across our site are all built at the correct height in relation to each other.

4) Establish frontage line

 Drive a peg in as a rough general area and then to indicate the exact measurement.
 Put a nail that will be the right on the measurement. Nails indicate corners of a house.
 The pegs must be secure and not move.
 Establish a 4 m string line from peg A to peg B which is parallel to our boundary.

5) Establish peg C
 Use the Pythagoras theorem method :
X 2 = 4 2+22
2
X = 16 + 4
2
X = 20
X = √ 20
X =4.472 m

 Put the nail on the peg C. Establish a 2 m string line from peg C to peg A.
 Establish a 4.472 m string line from peg B to peg C.
 Make sure peg A and peg B forms a right angel on the corner.

6) Establish peg D
 Check diagonal A-D and C-B to make sure it is parallel.
 Establish the string lines up
 Marked out an overall building envelope.

7)Erect profiles
 How far back to put the pegs depend on the method of excavation you choose.
 Use spirit level (dumpy level) to put in the profile top.
 Mark profiles with nails.

8) Repeat step 7 for remaining profiles

 Transfer our levels from our height peg over onto one of these pegs.

9) Take the string lines off and transfer the marks on survey pegs onto the profiles.

 Take a string line and attach it to one of the survey peg

 Plumb a line up with a spirit level or use a Plumb Bob and plumb down
 Extend the line through till it crosses the top of the profile
 Put a nail in the top of the profile
 Repeat the process the whole way around

10) Remove the corner pegs and start excavation

 The dimension of the plan indicates the outside of the brickwork
 Trenches excavated
