software in either plain or formatted text. Software
programmes are supported include BibTeX,
EndNote, Reference Manager, RefWorks and
Zotero. Users who register and sign into their
account can save individual citations by clicking
on the My Bibliography option (note that users
may also sign in with their Facebook log on
information). Clicking on a work’s title provides
access to the detailed record for that work. In
addition to the citation and abstract, the detailed
record includes hyperlinked keywords and topic
categories, the date the work was added to the
Archive, the revision history for the work and
analytics, including the number of total and recent
downloads (within the past six months). Buttons
at the top of each detailed record provide
information on how to cite the work, edit the
record (limited to registered users) and access the
work in PhilPapers.
Content can be browsed by clicking on the

Browse link located on the static navigation
banner. Doing so presents the user with the option
of viewing all subject categories or seven narrow
categories: Metaphysics and Epistemology; Value
Theory; Science, Logic, and Mathematics;
History of Western Philosophy; Philosophical
Traditions; Philosophy, Misc; and Other
Academic Areas. Each of these narrow categories
is divided into additional subcategories and topics
within the subcategories. Clicking on any one of
the topics within a subcategory provides a list of
citations within the topic chosen. Numbers to the
right of each topic indicate the number of works
included in the archive on that topic. The names
of the assigned category editors are also indicated.
Works listed under a specific topic are presented
by default in alphabetical order by the author’s last
name (or by the last name of the first author for
co-authored works), but may be resorted by the
year of publication, book price (for those books
that might be included), impact (the number of
times the work has been cited), the date the work
was uploaded to the archive and the number of
downloads.
The site is well organized and easy to use.
Navigation is straightforward, whether browsing
the categorized topic menus or using the Sphinx-
powered search engine. Results are returned
quickly and are easily manipulated according to
one’s needs. The full text can be accessed from
either the results lists or from a work’s detailed
record by clicking on the appropriate download
link or button. Works are in a variety of formats,
depending on the open access policy of the journal
or publisher. Pre-prints and post-prints are, for
the most part, in Microsoft Word, while published
formatted works are in PDF. No broken links or
other access issues were identified when using the
site. The only potential problem for users is that
pre-prints and post-prints are not identified as

such within the citations or detailed records.
While the difference between the two can
sometimes be determined by accessing the full
text, the addition of a note on the detailed record
would be helpful to users who have a need to
know.
Overall, however, this is a well-conceived and
executed resource providing free access to an
abundance of philosophical research. While e-
print archives are common in STEM and social
science fields, they are, for the most part, rare in
the humanities. The editors should be
commended for creating such a valuable resource
for philosophy and for setting the standard for
other disciplines within the humanities to follow.
While the site is aimed towards professional
philosophers, it would be equally useful to
students and to those with a casual interest in the
subject.

The SAGE Encyclopedia of Psychology and Gender
summarizes and provides a solid introduction to
the ways psychology differs or is similar by gender,
and the ways gender may influence psychological
well-being or symptoms. The editor, a professor at
John Jay College of Criminal Justice and the City
University of New York, has assembled a group of
contributors from universities and research
institutions, primarily in the USA and western
Europe. This team has created a tool that
encourages exploration and connects to other
relevant resources.
For example, the entry titled Mania and
Gender describes the unique ways that the
symptoms of this phase of bipolar disorder (and

bipolar disorder in general) affect men and
women. Citing a variety of studies, the list of
differences is helpful for researchers and even
novice clinicians. As with similar articles that have
relevant connections with information in the
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental
Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), those
connections are explained, helping users connect
research and theory with classifications. Articles
on other topics, such as Role Models and Gender,
do not link to the DSM-5, but instead summarize
the research into how having role models of the
same or different genders influence one’s
perceptions of ability in the field.
In general, the articles are up to date, with
several using examples of the role of gender
leading up to and after the 2016 US presidential
election. Each article is signed and includes cross-
references to other relevant articles (links in the
online version), as well as short lists of further
readings on the topic.

The encyclopedia includes a timeline of major
events in gender history in the USA, including
those in the areas of education, suffrage,
psychology, civil rights and sexuality. The timeline
itself has a significant bibliography which can
assist researchers in locating books, reports and
articles covering these events and advances. A
Resource Guide at the end of the encyclopedia
highlights books, journals, organizations and
websites that may have additional information.
Accessing the encyclopedia on the SAGE
platform is clear and simple, and articles loaded
quickly when tested. The main page is
uncluttered, with tabs showing the major sections
of the encyclopedia, and two boxes for searching
the content: one to search within the
encyclopedia, and one to browse entries starting
with entered terms. Below these options is an
alphabetical list of entries. By default, the starting
point is the list of entries, but tabs take the user to

the introductory material, a Reader’s Guide,
which is a list of entries presented as a thematic
outline, a subject index and two appendices.
Logically, it seems that the introductory material
would come before the main content of the
encyclopedia, but this is a small criticism. The
arrangement does not hinder access.
A search box at the top of each article allows
the user to find terms within the article. Although
this is redundant with browser searching,
functionality using control-F (command-F on
Macs) may be helpful for those using the
encyclopedia on a phone or tablet. Using buttons
alongside the article, readers can generate citations
in several formats or export citation information to
a variety of citation managers. Users can also
create a list of articles for later use, or email
articles to themselves or others. Finally, the user
can adjust the size of the type for easier reading.
The only help function, however, is located at the
bottom of the page and links to the general SAGE
help. Users must be patient enough to realize they
need the SAGE Knowledge help section on that
page – that may not be readily apparent if a user is
not focused on the branding.
Researchers can easily download PDFs of
articles by using a bold link separate from the
browser’s printing function. The PDFs include a
cover sheet with bibliographic information and the
complete content of the article. Links to related
articles are active so the reader can connect to
further information immediately.
Overall, given the encyclopedia’s timeliness,
clear formatting, understandable writing style and
links and references to high quality sources, this is
a very good resource for upper-level high school
and academic libraries.
