HAIR POLICIES IN SCHOOLS OR UNIVERSITIES

Hair policies are implemented mostly in prisons, workplaces, and schools or universities.
Although organizations claim that hair regulations are for safety reasons, they could have a
discriminatory effect. DepEd Order 32, s. 2017 was released during the Duterte administration
with the goal of "promoting the protection of children from all forms of gender-related violence,
abuse, exploitation, and bullying, as well as to promote gender equality and non-discrimination in
the workplace and within the DepEd." This Memorandum served as the foundation for the
#nohaircutpolicy movement, which gathered traction on social media and sought to challenge the
hair length policy in particular for male students. In addition to the haircut regulation for boys, the
use of hair color is also rigorously prohibited in the majority of schools. That’s why I stand to
remove hair policies in schools or universities.

First of all, there is no scientific study that says our hair affects our academic performance.
It doesn't affect how well we do in school. So why is it necessary for us to follow this rule?
Everyone has the right to decide how they want to look. Forced changes to a student's appearance
can have a significant impact on his confidence and self-esteem, which can turn out to have an
impact on his academic performance. Depression can be brought on by low self-esteem, and
depression reduces performance. Schools ought to adopt a policy that allows students to choose
their hairstyles while still reflecting the standards of decency. The first place where students should
learn about respecting others should be at school, along with lessons on diversity and self-
expression. The ability to accept the diversity of people and cultures should be a hallmark of a
global citizen. You shouldn't encourage your kids to believe that there are only a few attractive
hair colors and styles. Wouldn't it be more equitable if we were allowed to dress however we
pleased? We each have different aesthetic preferences. Everyone aspires to look their best because
doing so demonstrates self-care. It's a method for us to express who we are, and we shouldn't be
prevented from doing so.
