ORIGIN
In1928, the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), created in France in 1904,
approved the realization of the first World Cup.

That first edition was held in Uruguay in 1930. The local team was crowned champion after
beating Argentina in the final by 4 goals to 2 in the newly built Centenario Stadium in
Montevideo.

Since then the World Cup has been heldevery four years, with the exception of the period
between 1942 and 1946, during which international competitions were suspended because of
World War II.

So far 21 World Cups have been played, 11 in Europe, 8 in America, 1 in Asia and 1 in Africa. The
team with the most participations is Brazil, since it played all the World Cups.
The countries in which more World Cups have been organized are Mexico, Brazil, Italy, France and
Germany, with two editions each, as can be seen in the table below

HOW TO CHOOSE
THE HOST?
First the candidates for a World Cup are elected. For example for the
World Cup 2018, the candidates were: England, Russia,
Spain/Portugal and Belgium/Netherlands.

The election is secret All members of the FIFA Executive Committee

give their vote.

To obtain the right to host a World Cup, the applicant must have an
absolute majority (50 percent + 1) of the votes of the members of the
FIFA Executive Committee present.

In the event of a tie, the FIFA President has the casting vote.

In all votes where an absolute majority is not achieved, the candidate

with the lowest number of votes shall be eliminated for the next vote.
DID YOU KNOW THAT...
IN MEXICO 1970...

In this World Cup, cards were used for the first time, so that
everyone could be aware of the players who were cautioned
or sent off. However, no players were sent off. Uruguay was the
team that received the most yellow cards with 6.

THE THEFT OF THE WORLD CUP...

On December 19, 1983, the Rimet Trophy, the first World

Cup, was stolen in Rio de Janeiro and never reappeared,
becoming one of the greatest mysteries in the history of
World Cups.
