Punicalagin is a beneficial compound found in pomegranate that has anti-neoplastic properties. This study summarizes the effect of punicalagin on various cancer types, including ovarian, lung, central nervous system, bone, and thyroid cancers. Specifically, it discusses how punicalagin downregulates antiapoptotic proteins and upregulates proapoptotic proteins in cancer cells, inhibiting their growth and spread. Previous research also found that punicalagin protects DNA from mutations and carcinogens, and that pomegranate juice containing punicalagin inhibited the growth and metastasis of various tumor cells.

Pomegranate extract is a great source of hydrolyzable tannin, antioxidants,
anthocyanin, anti-inflammatory compounds, and anti-neoplastic properties But less is known about Punicalagin beneficial compound present in pomegranate. In this study near punicalagin effect on neoplastic cells is summarized and the effect on signaling circuits that enhance cancer growth is discussed. Effect of punicalagin on ovarian, lung, central nervous system, bone, thyroid as well as other cancer types. Pomegranates are enriched with polyphenols (Eur. J. Clin. Ntr. 2019, 73, 647-656) studies prove that diet rich in polyphenols reduces the risk of diseases like cancer diabetes cardiovascular diseases obesity, and metabolically syndromes. Punicalagin, hydrolyzable tannin belongs to ellagitannin present in the flower, leaves, bark, and seeds of a pomegranate. In a moist environment, it undergoes hydrolysis and releases ellagic acid. Both punicalagin and ellagic acid protect the DNA from a mutation from a variety of carcinogens. Seeram et al explain that pomegranate juice which is full of Punicalagin inhibited the spread of human oral, prostate, and tumor cells. Zhang et al observed the cytotoxic effect of punicalagin on Me-180 cells with a dose of up to 100 Micrometer and Tang et al observed antiproliferative action. Both groups noted the downregulation of antiapoptotic Bcl-2 and upregulation of proapoptotic Bax protiens from Punicalagin treatment. Pen et al observed the stimulation of cancer cell motility in the case of breast cancer.
