Invitation

Oxford & Cambridge Society of Rheinland

PERSONAL

Düsseldorf, 11th November 2022

Oxbridge new year with Professor emeritus Dr. Dr. h. c. Wilfried Loth

Dear friends,
When I started drafting this invitation on Sunday, 16th October 2022, former US-General Ben
Hodges made my day. In an interview to the FAZ he explained quite convincingly why “Crimea
will be freed by next summer.” What great news after years of plague and the outbreak of war!
Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are not given to us by a great protector after all, nor are
they everlasting. They must be defended all the time. Not only by our institutions, but by all of
us, a courageous citizen might add. Who would disagree on the basis of our most recent collective
experience?

This is not the road to nowhere, it is what the road to Bucha looked like beginning of April. Well,
there is opportunity to take part in the defence at our New Year’s reception:

Date & Time: Friday, 17th February 2023, 6.30 for 7pm
Venue: Industrie-Club, Elberfelderstrasse 6, 40213 Düsseldorf.

Our mobilisation can only be intellectual and we are excited to have Professor Loth again as guest
speaker on the evening. Most competently, if you will remember, he reviewed for us the history of
the relationship of the U.K. with the project of European unification and with the European Union
at our New Year’s reception in 2017.

Frieden schaffen — aber wie? Das Ende des Kalten Krieges und die Zukunft Europas“

When the wall came down, it seemed as if an age of peace and democracy lay ahead of us. Now,
we are facing a terrible war in Eastern Europe, a war which is, in fact, being waged against the
open and democratic societies of the Western world. In the current setting, Professor Loth will be
aiming to answer two questions with his talk: What went wrong? And how can we escape this
sinister situation?
The talk will be over dinner, for which a light menu has been especially created:

Cauliflower tartare and marinated beetroot

with almond cream, potato bread chips and cress

Potato-pear risotto topped with
pike-perch fillet, shiso cress and pomegranate seeds
or
Roast-beef rolls stuffed with bacon, shallot, cucumber and mustard
by seasonal vegetables and almond mashed potatoes.

The price for the evening is e67; this includes aperitif, water, selected wines (Sauvignon Blanc
2020, Inurrieta Orchidea, Embotellado en la propiedad, Bodegas Inurrietta S.L. and Cuvée 2018,
Incognito, Qualitätswein trocken, Philipp Kuhn) as well as coffee after dinner and port at the bar.

in cases of force majeure, but in any case will become nonrefundable 14 days before the date of the
