Warm up: Make me say “Yes, I can”/Make me say “No, I can’t”

-Students must ask the teacher questions to which his or her real answer is “Yes, I can”, e.g. “Can you speak
Spanish?” and “Can you go rollerblading?”

-Then, if students are engaged in the game, they should try to get “No, I can’t” answers.

-This can be done in groups, and having one student answering. All should participate if possible.

? Questions Can you swim fast?
Yes, I can swim well.
Answers
No, I can’t swim fast.

Can/can’t matching partners’ cards.

1. Project sports card (see last page of this word document) and all together name them. Let it displayed
on the board. Or hand in one or two copies per group and ask students to write down the sport activity.
2. Give a deck of cards to each group, all facing down. Then, each student must take 3 cards without
looking at them.
3. One student starts asking, trying to have a match to one of his/her partner’s cards. For example:
Lucía: “María, can you swim / go swimming?”
María: “Yes, I can swim and I can swim very well!”
4. Then, there’s a match! So the student who asks the question and is answered “yes” gets the two cards.
Rules:
 Each student must ask one question to one partner. He/she can choose the partner.
 Students must ask questions using can and answer them using long forms. If they don’t do it, they
lose their turn.

Extra: find someone who / memory game.

1. Ask students to write down on a piece of paper 2 things they can and can’t do well (not necessarily
sports) and one thing that they can or can’t do fast. They should use 3 of the following verbs: sing, act,
draw, play an instrument, read, jump, run.

2. Ask them to draw a table and start walking around to find someone who matches!
