Socrates, (c. 470 BCE, Athens [Greece] — died 399 BCE, Athens)
- a Greek philosopher who influenced Western philosophy through his way of life,
attitude, and thought.
- Plato and Xenophon, two of Socrates' students, wrote narratives about him
because he didn't produce any works of his own to leave behind.

- Socrates’ reputation during his time was that of an annoying philosopher who
would embarrass others in the process of asking them questions about what they
professed as their expertise.
- He knew that he did not know anything, whereas other men and women go about
living in the world pretending or deluding themselves with the thought that they
knew everything
- Affronted with false charges, he stood his own by solely telling the truth.
- He was subsequently sentenced to death for allegedly insulting the gods and
corrupting the minds of the youths.
