How to connect a MiR robot to a WiFi

network
Date: 2022-04-06
Document version: 2.1
Valid for: All MiR robots
Valid for software version: 2.13.0 or higher
Valid for hardware version: N/A

You can connect MiR robots directly to your WiFi network if you want it to
communicate with other devices on the network.

When your robot it connected to a wireless network, you can access the robot
interface by entering the IP address of the robot into the browser on another
device connected to the same network.

If your robot is running software 2.13.1.1 or higher, You can also choose to set
the robot's default gateway IP address without a WiFi connection being activated.
This is useful when you want to utilize an external router or 5G CPE that is
connected to the robot via Ethernet to extend the robot's wireless capabilities.
For more information, see Using a static gateway on page 6.

Before connecting the robot
Step 1: Turn on the robot and connect to its network. You can either do this
by connecting an Ethernet cable to the robot or by connecting to it's WiFi signal.

Step 2: Go to System > Settings > WiFi.

Step 3: Use the toggle at the top of the page to choose whether you want
to use the new WiFi system or the old system. You can always toggle
between the two, but each time you switch, the robot is temporarily
disconnected from the WiFi. The new WiFi network has the following additional
features:
• You can modify how often the robot should scan for better WiFi signals.
• You can limit which channels the robot scans for signals on.
• It is not possible to connect the robot to a network that is not password
protected.

Connecting the robot
Step 1: Under System > Settings > WiFi, select + Add connection.

Step 2: Select the network you want the robot to be connected to, and fill
out the displayed fields.

• Select a network
Select the network you want to connect to from the list of available networks. If
you cannot see the network you are looking for, try selecting Reload.
• Security type
Select a security protocol.
• Background scan frequency (only available when the improved settings
are enabled)
Select whether the robot must scan for a better WiFi signal more often. This
means the robot is more likely to be using the strongest signal more often, but
may also make the robot jump more frequently between access points.

• Channel selection (only available when the improved settings are
enabled)
By default, the robot scans all frequency channels across the 2.4 GHz and
5 GHz ranges. To reduce scanning time, if you know which channels your
network is using, you can limit the robot to only scan on the necessary
channels.

If you select Custom setup, you have the following two options:
• 2.4 GHz channels
Enter the channels the robot should use on the 2.4 GHz band.
• 5 GHz channels
Enter the channels the robot should use on the 5 GHz band.
• Password
Enter the password used to sign in to the network. The network must be
password protected if you are using the improved settings.
• DNS servers
Enter DNS servers using the format: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. Use semicolon (;) as the
delimiter.
• Use static IP
To use a static IP address, select this check box and fill in the following fields: IP
address, Netmask, and Gateway.

Step 3: Select + Add connection when you have finished. The robot is now
connected to the network. When you are connected to the same network, you
can access the robot's interface by entering the IP address displayed under the
connection description into your internet browser.

1.1 Using a static gateway

Instead of using a WiFi connection as described in the previous section, you can
instead choose to set the robot's default gateway IP address without a WiFi
connection being activated. This is useful when you want to utilize an external
router or 5G CPE that is connected to the robot via Ethernet to extend the robot's
wireless capabilities. You should NOT use this feature along with the normal WiFi
connections.

To use this setting, under Settings > WiFi > Advanced settings, you must set
the Default gateway to Static, and then you can enter a valid IP address under
Gateway IP. The IP address must be in the 192.168.12.1–192.168.12.99 range
and not reserved for internal use. If the entered address cannot be reached or is
invalid, the robot will report an error.
