Paper Outline: Archetypal Patterns in Groundhog Day.

Theme: The theme that is mostly present in this movie is spirituality theme
Introduction:
 Archetypes that go with the theme are archetypal journey (quest of identity),
Situational archetype (the journey), Symbolic archetype (light vs darkness) and
heroic archetype (transcendent hero). 
Body section 1: 
 Archetypal journeys: Phil’s journey in the movie is finding himself, his journey is
spiritual journey. Archetypal journey is supposed to help finding spirituality
theme.
-helps Phil find and change himself.
- shows that people have moments of their life where they question themselves
about their behavior.
-the archetype makes the reader understanding that Phil’s journey is for his
character.
 Archetype support: first is Phil’s journey that starts in the beginning of the
movie and ends when Phil understands himself and be a better man. This
journey for Phil was very meaningful with challenges and moment that made him
a better person.

Body section 2:
 Situational archetype:
-This archetype helps us to understand what makes Phil’s journey spiritual.
-makes the watcher watching the movie carefully to connect events with the
theme.
 How is supported:
-The quest: in the beginning Phil’s real quest was to be present as a Pittsburg
journalist in Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney. But this quest changed when he
stocked the time loop. His quest now was to get out of that loop but during this
period that he was struggling to get out of the loop he begins to understand
himself.
-The fall: the fall was failing to make Rita fall in love with which leads Phil making
the suicides because he feels useless and broken by Rita’s refusal.
-Death and rebirth: the suicides he makes leads to a rebirth. He understands that
dying over and over was not a solution, so he decides to fight the loop by making
good things for people and finding the good Phil inside of him.
-Battle between good and evil: the evil was the first Phil in the beginning that was
selfish and didn't care about anyone but himself and the good was the fight to
find his true self and be a help for those people.

Body section 3:
 Symbolic archetypes:
-With symbolic archetype makes us to understand that in the movie are some
part and events that are so meaningful for Phil.

How is supported:
-Light vs darkness: is Phil’s selfishness against inner goodness of himself.
-Supernatural intervention: is the time loop, it makes Phil understand himself.
-The crossroads: the city that makes Phil stay in Punxsutawney and make
changes in his life.

-The maze: the time loop that forced Phil to relive the same day until he finds
himself and be a better person.

 Heroic archetype: Phil in the movie is a transcendent hero not just a hero.
-Phil begins to change after he understands his true purpose on that time loop.
-He began to be influenced by the words of the people who were in time loop
with him (Gus, Ralph).
 Conclusion:
I. This paper’s theme is focused on stages of changes and spirituality that
happened to Phil.
II. Archetypes that help to understand and support the theme are archetypal
journey, situational archetypes, symbolic archetypes, heroic archetypes.
III. Archetypal journey was for Phil finding himself.
IV. Situational archetypes are based on these occurrences that happen to Phil and
made him question himself and make Phil change himself.
V. Symbolic Archetypes help us understand the true meaning of the movie and the
reason of stuckness of Phil in the time loop.
VI. Heroic archetype that helps us understand what type of hero is Phil.
