1. SECURITY INSTRUCTIONS

Important:
To secure a safe installation of the GJ-EX detector in an explosive area the following must be
observed.
The installation should only be carried out by qualified personnel who are well proven in the
safe application and usage of electrical equipment and installation work as well as the
national and international laws, directives and standards applying to the area.

Important:
When reassembling the top section of the detector after changing the sensor element, the
two M5 assembly screws must be tightened to a torque of 15 Nm.

Warning:
The cable gland is an ATEX certified “EEx e” approved type. If the gland is to be replaced,
make sure that a type with the same approval is used.

Warning:
Do not open the detector lid when an explosive gas atmosphere is present. Avoid electro-
static charging. Clean the detector with a damp cloth only.

2. APPLICATION

The gas detector type GJ-EX is an explosion proof detector designed for use in zone 1 areas
in the temperature range of 100 ºC to 150 ºC (Encapsulation: EEx de IIC T3).
The purpose of the gas detector is to constantly deliver a voltage signal to the connected
alarm monitor. The size of the voltage signal is affected by the level of gas in the surrounding
air.
The detector is connected to a gas alarm monitor with the alarm levels adjusted to suit the
gas in question.

3. INSTALLATION

The detector is connected to the alarm monitor through a three core screened installation
cable (3 x 1.5mm2 Cu). The terminals marked A, B and C in the detector are connected to
the identically marked terminals in the alarm monitor and the screen is connected to terminal
marked W.

4. MAINTENANCE

All sensors are affected to a greater or lesser extent by the environment in which the detector
is located. Also, all technical equipment can go wrong for various reasons. Therefore we
recommend a test of the gas alarm system regularly. Once a month the following electrical
test should be done: The relevant alarm monitor switch is toggled to the position marked
TEST thereby activating the alarm circuits. After testing, reset is done by depressing the
same switch. (Please note that the above test function does not apply to all Geopal gas
alarm monitors.)
Under normal circumstances an annual calibration control is recommended. At exposed
places a calibration control every six months is recommended. It is the responsibility of the
system owner to see that the maintenance and calibration control is carried out.
5

5. FAULT

If the sensor element is ruined or the detector cable is cut or disconnected, the alarm monitor
will enter into fault condition, which is shown by the yellow indicator marked FAULT lighting
up on the gas alarm monitor. The fault relay contacts and the internal buzzer will be
activated. (Please note that the above fault function does not apply to all Geopal gas alarm
monitors.)

6. ADJUSTMENT / CALIBRATION

Adjustment and calibration is carried out on the gas alarm monitor which is set to give alarm
at the agreed levels. This applies to both high and low alarm levels.
As a standard for the alarm levels, a test gas corresponding to the high alarm level and a test
gas corresponding to the low alarm level should be used.
New sensor elements will change slightly within the first days of operation. Therefore, the
calibration should not be carried out until the alarm monitor has been switched on for at least
ten days.

6.1 Calibration equipment

To be able to carry out the calibration, a high alarm level and a low alarm level test gas, a
valve with a flowmeter for the gas cylinders, a hose connection set and a suitable digital
voltmeter for the voltage measurements will be needed.

6.2 Test gas / aerosol cans

The gas detector type GJ-EX 150 ºC is provided with a threaded hole in the detector part
(1/4” pipe thread). The hole is designed to allow easy access for test gas during calibration.
The test gas can be fed through the hose connection. In this way the test gas is led through
the side hole and out of the detector bottom. This procedure makes it possible to use only a
limited gas volume for calibration. A flow of approx. 200 ml/min will be sufficient. With a flow
of 200 ml/min 10 litres of test gas will allow approx. 50 minutes of gas flow.
