Mixed-flow (MF) pumps are hybrids, in that they use both mechanisms, which is why they

are sometimes referred to as diagonal pumps. A benefit of the hybrid nature of MF pumps
is that they can be used with both volute (radial) housings and straight-through tubular
(axial) housings. In conjunction with dry or wet sump intakes, they offer great freedom in
installation design, which is often a critical cost factor.
