3. ERT160 functional description (Figure 6)

The ERT160 transceiver is a metallic housing in the form of a parallelepiped.

It is made up of a chassis (8) with a front panel equipped:

- with a main connector J1 (3) (for wiring, see figure 7),

- two coaxial connectors:

. one receive connector "RX" (5),

. one transmit connector "TX" (4).

A filtering assembly (6) is provided behind the front panel. An interconnection board PL1 (7) located at the
base of the unit supports the following circuits:

- power supply board (9),

- input/output board (10),

- microprocessor board (2),

- servo-loop board (1).

A central partition (11) supports the hyperfrequency unit.

Two screws goes through the subassemblies via spacers. This arrangement improves the vibration
strength of the boards.

A cover assembly (12) protects the circuits of the ERT160 unit.

4. Radio altimeter operating principle

A voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) is driven by a sawtooth generator and transmits a frequency
modulated signal as in Figures 8 and 9.

The signal is reflected by the ground, comes back and is received by the receiving antenna after a delay τ
proportional to the aircraft height H.

A difference exists between the transmitted frequency and the received frequency:

dF
fb(t) = F(t) - F(t- τ ) = τ
dt
If the modulation is linear:

∆F
fb = τ
T

The fb error voltage is integrated, amplified and is used to control the modulator which is a sawtooth
generator with a constant amplitude and a slope which is function of the control voltage.

The sawtooth generator then drives the transmitting source and the loop closes through the ground.

A monitoring discriminator ensures that the beat frequency spectrum is centered on fbo (fbo is the desired
value of fb, fbo = 25 kHz). In the absence of spectrum, a search cycle is triggered and the alarms are
displayed after an appropriate time constant.

Searching implies frequency sweep corresponding to height range.

Searching is made at switch-on or when the aircraft height exceeds the system range.

One search cycle takes about 0.7 second and is repeated as long as there is no correct beat signal.

As soon as the modulation rate corresponds to the height of the aircraft, the energy in the monitoring
discriminator rises above a presety threshold and the radio altimeter loop begins to track the height
variation.

The monitoring discriminator continuously monitors the quality of the received signal. There is therefore a
permanent check of the complete loop including antennas and reflection from the ground.

Signal transmitted by the unit

Figure 8

The height information is derived from the modulation period T which is measured by a counter working on
clock pulses.

As opposed to other non controlled systems, the frequency difference fb and the frequency deviation ∆F
do not depend on the height. The only variable parameter proportional to height is the frequency
modulation rate of the transmitter.

The basic equation can be written as follows:

∆F
T =τ.
fb

In the AHV-16, ∆F = 123 MHz and fb = 25 kHz.

The delay τ depends on the aircraft height and also on the delay in the cables that connect the R/T unit to
the antennas:

2H
τ =τ i +
C
τi is the AID (Aircraft Installation Delay)
2H ∆F
thus T = ( . + τi )
C fb

With the above indicated values of ∆F and fb, T increases by 10 µs when H increases by 1 foot and τ by
2 ns. It is obviously easier to measure a 10 µs than a 2 ns variation.

5. Modules operation

The ERT160 R/T unit, designed in the form of a module, is composed of the following six modules:

- sub-assembly unit,
- hyperfrequency unit,
- microprocessor board,
- power supply board,
- input/output board,
- servo-loop board.

The four boards are connector pluggable.

A. Hyperfrequency unit (Figure 10)

(1) General

The microwave head is made up of two main parts:

- a transmit part (microwave source and cavities),

- a receive part (mixer-preamplifier).

The microwave source, frequency-modulated linearly by a sawtooth signal, transmits the FM/CW
wave toward the ground via a transmit antenna.

The wave resulting from ground reflection is picked up by the receive antenna. A microwave mixer
carries out the mixing of the received wave with a fraction of the transmitted wave. Thus one
obtains the beat signal which is previously amplified before being delivered to the servo loop.

The operation of the transmission source is monitored by means of two resonant cavities making it
possible to calibrate the frequency deviation ∆F between the transmitted wave and the center
frequency Fo.

B. Power supply board

The power supply is of DC-DC type using the forward converter principle.

The transfer of energy from the primary to the secondaries in the power supply transformer takes place
during the saturation of a chopper transistor.

An alarm circuit is also placed on the board. This circuit, separable from that of the power supply, is
capable of delivering + 28 V "alarm" information to the aircraft wiring, with the possibility of constantly
delivering a current of 0.5 A.

TESTING AND FAULT ISOLATION

1. General

The maintenance of the ERT160 R/T is carried out with a BTE160 test bench including an ARINC 429 digital
display and a BTE800 test bench.

In order to carry out 2th maintenance level, two types of tests are to be taken into account:

- operating tests,

- fault isolation test.

The fault isolation tests are used to detect and proceed to the exchange of the faulty module: these tests
are to be performed only if the result of an operating test is incorrect.

The spare modules are delivered and adjusted in factory; but it may be necessary to improve the
adjustments on the Power Supply board, on the Input/output board and on the Hyperfrequency module
when these boards are installed.

2. Test set-up (Figure 102)

On the BTE800 (refer to Figure 101), check that the switch S7 is set to “0” position.

3. Operating tests

The test procedure is intended to check the characteristics of the ERT160 transceiver unit.

The operating tests are carried out on the equipment with the cover closed.

A. Test setup

The general test setup is shown on figure 102.

The 0 foot reference is reached when the A and B points are directly gathered. In these conditions, the
electrical length of the line between the ERT160 transmission and reception connectors is of 28 feet
(AID).

This 28 feet AID thus comprises:

- the variable attenuator,

- the fixed attenuator(s) (or rotary attenuator),

- the coaxial cables for connection,

- the directional coupler 10 dB.

The attenuation, shown through each of these elements, should be known.

Before energizing the ERT160, (from the bench) check that the "ALTITUDE SIMULATOR" switch (S8) is
set to "OFF".

130 ft, 500 ft, 1000 ft, 2000 ft and 4500 ft. If the point A is linked to the point B, the corresponding delay
line is 0 ft (AID value).

NOTE: For the different values of the delay lines specified in the operating tests procedure (130 ft, 500 ft,
1000 ft, 2000 ft and 4500 ft), the accepted tolerance of the electrical length is ± 2 % (130 ft ± 2.6 ft, 500 ft
± 10 ft, 1000 ft ± 20 ft, 2000 ft ± 40 ft and 4500 ft ± 90 ft).

NOTE: To perform correctly the Accuracy measurement, it is necessary to know with accuracy the electrical
length and the corresponding attenuation inserted between “TX” and “RX” antenna access of the
ERT5X0.

NOTE: RF attenuation of each element (cables, delay line) must be known with accuracy in order to take into
account consideration for Sensitivity and RF transmitted power measurements.

NOTE: At the 10 dB attenuation access of the coupler:

- for the Transmitted Power measurement, a power meter must be connected
- for the Central Frequency and Deviation Frequency measurement, a wavemeter must be connected
(as shown on the Figure 102).

B. Tests procedure

(1) Configuration of equipment and RF test set-up

Refer to the paragraph 2 (Test set-up)

Between the points A and B of the RF test set-up (refer to Figure 102), insert a delay line of 130 ft
and adjust the total loop attenuation (between “TX” and “RX” access of the ERT160 to
63 dB ± 1 dB.

NOTE: In the operating tests procedure, the ERT160 is powered-on by setting the switch S7 of
the BTE800 (refer to Figure 101) to “~” position.
In the operating tests procedure, the ERT160 is powered-off by setting the switch S7 of
the BTE800 (refer to Figure 101) to “0” position.

(2) Power consumption

- Power-on the ERT160 and wait 10 seconds.

- For a power supply equal to 28 V ± 0.1 V, check that the consumed current Ic by the ERT160
is less than 0.6 A (read the value on M2 of BTE800).

- Tolerance: Ic < 0.6 A

(3) Hyperfrequency measurements

(a) Frequency measurement

- Configure the ERT160 in manual simulation by setting the switch S8 (of the BTE800, refer
to Figure 101) to “ON” position.

- With R4 and R3 (of the BTE800, refer to Figure 101), adjust the duration of the sawtooth
(displayed on the oscilloscope) to 1 ms ± 0.1 ms.

- Synchronize the oscilloscope with “SYNC” signal (from the connector J12 of the ARINC
429 DIGITAL DISPLAY).

- The transmission signal detected by the crystal detector is displayed on the oscilloscope.

- Adjust the wave-meter in the transmitted band, taking into account the absorption "beep".
Measure Fmax and Fmin and check that:
Fmin 4.238 MHz ± 20 MHz
It follows from this that Fmax - Fmin = ∆F = 123 MHz ± 3 MHz

(b) Measurements of transmitted power

- The ERT160 is always in manual simulation (the duration of the sawtooth is

1 ms ± 0.1 ms).

- Connect the milliwattmeter instead of the wave-meter on the output - 10 dB of the coupler
(refer to Figure 102).

- Measure the transmitted power, taking into account of the attenuation of the coupler and
connecting cables.

- Tolerance: Pe ≥ 40 mW

- Configure the ERT160 in normal mode by stopping the manual simulation (the switch S8
of the BTE800, refer to Figure 101, is set to “OFF” position).

(4) Sensibility measurements

(a) Measurements for given AID values

- Connect the point A to the point B of the RF test set-up, refer to Figure 102 (the electrical
length between “TX” and “RX” access of the ERT160 must be equal to 28 ft).

- Adjust the total loop attenuation to obtain the maximum attenuation between “TX” and
“RX” access of the ERT160.

- Check that the ERT160 is in “SEARCHING MODE” (On the ARINC 429 DIGITAL
DISPLAY, DS2 lights, refer to Figure 101).

- Slowly decrease the total loop attenuation until the ERT160 switchovers to “TRACKING
MODE” (On the ARINC 429 DIGITAL DISPLAY, DS1, DS2 and DS3 are extinguished,
refer to Figure 101).

- Calculate the total attenuation which equals A = A1 + A2 + A3:

- A1: the cables attenuation (including the interface cables)
- A2: the attenuation due to variable and fixed attenuators
- A3: the calibrated delay line attenuation

Page 108

COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL
ERT160
P/N 9599-607-18503

- The value A represents the sensitivity S value to be measured:

- Tolerance: 62 dB < S < 70 dB

- Power-off the ERT160.

- Configure the ERT160 to take into account an AID value equal to 57 ft, with the ARINC
429 digital display (refer to Figure 101):
- Switch S12 set to “1” position
- Switch S11 set to “0” position
- Switch S10 set to “1” position

- As the ERT160 is configured with an AID value of 57 ft, the electrical length between “TX”

5. Fault isolation tests (FIT)

They are used for detecting and replacing the module out of order: they are to be carried out only when the
result of a Normal Operation Test is incorrect.

During successive replacement of several modules, put back to place a removed module if the replacement
has proved ineffective and try with a new one.

During the Fault isolation tests procedure, it may be necessary to access to test points of some boards of the
ERT160, so the upper cover must be removed.

NOTE: The different adaptors are not specified because it depends on the type of the connectors used
for the different cables, attenuators,….

NOTE: In the test procedure, some tests are performed with AID value of 28 ft, 57 ft and 80 ft
simulated; to simulate these AID values, specific cables must be done (refer to paragraph 3.B).

3. 130 Feet Delay Line and AID cables Fabrication

A. 130 Feet delay line

(a) Calculation of the length

To find the length cable needed, use the formula:

H x 2 x 0.3048
Lm =
K
Lm = Length of cable in meter
K = Propagation factor of coaxial cable
(K = 1.51 for RG-223/U or RG-214/U, polyethylene dielectric)
H = Height to simulate
0.3048 = Proportionality rate feet/meter

CAUTION: K MAY VARY SLIGHTLY ACCORDING TO SUPPLIER.

COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL
ERT160
P/N 9599-607-18503

(b) Example of length

For H = 130 feet

130 x 2 x 0.3048
Lm = = 52.48 meters
1.51

(c) Example of 130 ft delay line

Delay line is made up of 52.48 meters length of coaxial cable (RG-214/U or RG-223/U)
equipped with one TNC male or female connector on each end (RADIALL or equivalent).
TNC male, reference: R143008 (for coaxial = 5 mm diameter)
TNC female, reference: R143207 (for coaxial = 5 mm diameter)

(d) Delay Line calibration

It is necessary to perform a fine calibration of the delay line to measure its delay and its
attenuation. It is mandatory to proceed to the calibration of the delay line, before introducing it
into service, by a department or company skilled in metrology.

Furthermore, an annual check of this attenuation is also highly recommended.

B. AID cables

(a) Calculation of the length

To find the length cable needed, use the formula:

AID x 0.3048
Lm =
K

Lm = Length of cable in meter

K = Propagation factor of coaxial cable
(K = 1.51 for RG-223/U or RG-214/U, polyethylene dielectric)
AID = AID value to simulate
0.3048 = Proportionality rate feet/meter

CAUTION: K MAY VARY SLIGHTLY ACCORDING TO SUPPLIER.

(b) Example of AID cable

For example of AID cables, refer to 3.A.(b) and 3.A.(c).

(c) AID cables calibration

Refer to 3.A.(d).
