Assignment # 5
Course Title: Statistical inference

1. The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes data on weekly earnings of non supervisory workers in Employment and
Earnings. The following data, in dollars, were collected from random samples of (full and part- time) workers in five
service producing industries.

Transp. And Pub. Whole sale trade Retail trade Finance Insurance, Real estate Services
Util.

512 396 246 346 299
559 380 133 336
490 227 273

Do the data provide sufficient evidence to conclude that a difference exists in mean weekly earnings among non
supervisory workers in the five industries? Use α= 0.01
2. Manufacturer of golf balls always seem to be claiming that their ball goes the farthest. A writer for sports magazine
decided to ,conduct an impartial test. She randomly selected 20 golf professionals and then randomly assigned four
golfers to each of five brand of balls. Each golfer drove the assigned brand of balls. The driving distances, in yards, are
displayed in the following table.

Brand1 Brand Brand3 Brand4 Brand 5

274 288 280 275 292

Do the data provide the sufficient evidence to conclude that a difference exists in mean driving distances among the
five brands of golf balls? Perform the required hypothesis test at 5% level of significance.
3. Three varieties of potatoes are being compared for yield. The experiment was conducted using 9 uniform plots at each
of 4 different locations. Each variety of potato was planted at each location on three plots selected at random. The
yields, in 100 kilograms per plot, were as follows:

Location Variety of Potatoes

A B C
1 15 20 22
19 24 17
12 18 14
2 17 24 26
10 18 19

3 9 12 10
12 15 5
6 10 8
4 14 21 19
8 16 15
11 14 12

Use a 0.05 level of significance to test the hypothesis that

a. There is no difference in the yielding capabilities of the 3 varieties of potatoes;

b. Different locations have no effect on the yields;
c. The locations and varieties of potatoes do not interact.
4. The following data represent the final grades obtained by 5 students in Mathematics, English, French, and Biology:
