Introduction
wine, beer, spirits, and other alcoholic beverages. Any liquid that contains at least half a percent
alcohol by volume and is safe for human consumption is considered an alcoholic beverage.
Alcohol is considered a drug that could affect a person’s mind and physical body depending how
much alcohol is consumed. Alcoholic drinks and beverages tend to be high in carbohydrate as
Alcohol has health benefits, such as weight loss, cholesterol reduction, and acquiring a
lower risk of diabetes. It is no ordinary commodity but a drug that can be depended upon.
A study published in 2017 by Molly Carlyle et al., discovered that drinking alcohol
improves recall of learning that occurs prior to a drinking session and that this effect is stronger
with higher alcohol consumption. It has been discovered that alcohol inhibits the brain's ability
to absorb new information, freeing up resources to more firmly embed previous learning. The
team explains in their study that there is a lot of documented evidence of the effects of alcohol
on memory performance. This proves, for example, that people under the influence of alcohol
have a reduced ability to form new memories. Moreover, there is evidence that alcohol can
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (n.d.) defines binge or impulsive

Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome, liver and heart diseases, erratic sleep patterns, drastic weight
discussed various social and cultural factors that influence alcoholic beverage consumption.
They specified certain contexts and environments to deduce the risk factors from a societal
extent down to an individual level. The levels of alcohol use vary in communities due to the
aspects of gender and race/ethnicity. For example, it was seen that globally, men drink more
compared to women and women from developed countries consume more alcohol than those
in developing countries (Sudhinaraset, et al., 2016, as cited in Rhem et al., 2009). In terms of
socioeconomic status, socioeconomic indicators (SES) were used to determine the drinking
behaviors of people. Those with higher SES had the tendency to drink more often while those
with lower SES were more likely to consume larger amounts (Sudhinaraset et al., 2016, as cited
in Huckle et al., 2010). The authors suggested that the individual-level factors that lead to
alcohol consumption can be found in one’s own home, work, and learning environments; these
are all part of a larger community. Public advertising, which is considered a macro-level factor,
also has a big possibility of making an impact on family and peer systems when it comes to
attitudes and norms. Eventually, it reaches the individual and shifts his/her individual behaviors
and attitudes. Media exposure shows alcoholic beverages in shows, movies, and social media;
its constant presence in day-to-day life influences the social norms on drinking. As discovered in
empirical studies, targeted alcohol marketing instills positive beliefs in individuals where the
consumption of alcohol is socially acceptable and even encouraged (Sudihinaraset et al., 2016,
as cited in Alaniz and Wilkes 1998; Hastings et al. 2005; McKee et al. 2011).
There are community influences that push an individual to start drinking. Various
neighborhood characteristics and opportunities to purchase and consume alcohol all contribute
to drinking habits. Those from poorly-built environments were found to be 150% more likely to
engage in heavy drinking than those in better neighborhoods (Sudhinaraset et al., 2016, as cited
in Bernstein et al., 2007). Early exposure to violence, delinquent individuals, and alcohol
Among the strongest influences on the drinking behavior of adolescents are family and
peer relationships since they are the people a person spends time with most. According to
various studies, increased alcohol use of parents and friends is connected to the high alcohol
intake of adolescents and young adults. On the other hand, lower alcohol consumption was
observed when family support, bonding, and parental monitoring (Sudhinaraset et al., 2016, as
cited in Bahr et al. 1995; White et al., 2006). However, during late adolescence, peer influences
are considered more compared to those of the parents who “protect” their children against
alcoholic substances (Sudhinaraset et al., 2016, as cited in Schwinn and Shinke, 2014; Zehe and
Colderm 2014). Peer pressure, peer alcohol norms, and socialization with individuals who use
certain substances can lead to the misuse of alcohol and intense drinking (Sudhinaraset et al.,
2016, as cited in Studer et al., 2014; Varvil-Weld et al., 2014; Patrick et al., 2013).
person's physical, mental, emotional, and social health factors”. The absence of disease or
illness is only one aspect of well-being. Well-being is strongly connected to aspects of happiness
and life satisfaction (BHC, 2022). It may be summed up as how you feel about your life and
yourself. As stated by BHC (2022), “how you feel about your life largely depends on the way you
see it".
Drinking is very much typical in a student’s life. It became a medium of fun and
de-stressing in college. Heavy drinking or drinking is integral to college life. As stated by Yakam
(2021), considering the workload and stress among college students, drinking alcoholic
beverages is a way to “blow off steam” or escape from personal or school problems, relieving
stress, and gaining relaxation. It may also be brought about by peer pressure among friends or
classmates, leisure purposes, and social acceptance. Drinking has become a norm in gaining a

sought to discover how the consumption of alcohol affects life satisfaction and mental health
among university students. The study aimed to investigate the association between alcohol
consumption and the number of friends, social and emotional loneliness, measures potentially
influencing both life satisfaction, and mental health. Most students often report positive
outcomes and experiences with drinking, such as socializing, expressing oneself, social approval,
and acceptance. Using linear regression models, it was found that students who consumed
hazardous amounts reported lower life satisfaction, more mental health complaints, and
increased emotional and social loneliness than students who consumed low-risk amounts. High
levels of alcohol consumption among students may indicate an increased risk of various
problems in the present and future. It is suggested that the quality of friendships may be more
important than the number of friends for satisfaction in life and betterment of mental health.
However, social integration in student communities may be more difficult for students who do
through a qualitative study. In addition to the literature collected, observations from the
completed the data. The results of the study showed that the students who typically consume
alcohol had poorer performance in academics compared to those who do not. It was then
proven that beer has chronic and acute effects on certain areas of the brain that are responsible
for learning. Alcohol impairs memory (Chabu et al., 2021, as cited in the National Institute on
Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2015). Difficulty in time management and motor impairment
due to alcohol abuse were also recorded. Furthermore, students who drank alcohol were
observed more with the negative impacts such as getting into fights, not doing assignments on
time, failing examinations, and even spending more years to finish studies.
Research Gap
Many studies have already been conducted on the topic due to the common presence of
alcohol around the world. The wide range and significant number of alcoholic beverage
consumers have allowed many researchers to study its effects on various aspects of the human
body– physical, mental, and cognitive. There have also been materials on the genetic and social
factors that lead to drinking alcohol and, eventually, alcoholism. However, despite the
abundance of studies and literature, there have only been a few ones that are specific to grade
12 students. To add, there hasn’t been much local research done on alcohol consumption of
alcoholic beverages have on grade 12 students are rarely available. It is crucial that the distinct
effects of alcohol consumption on their well-being are determined to deduce its impact on
Cafe Racer and Tiki Bar– on Friday nights. Their constant presence in partying and drinking
venues are evident on social media websites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok.
With this, the researchers want to know how students’ overall well-being is affected by alcohol

The findings of the current study will prove useful to the following entities:
The Grade 12 Students of Silliman University. The study will aid the grade 12 students in
understanding how alcoholic beverage consumption can affect them. Since the study covers
physical and physiological aspects, they will become more familiar with the direct and indirect
effects alcoholic drinks have on their bodies. Knowing the short and long term effects will also
prove useful to being more cautious of the amount of alcohol intake. Lastly, the consideration
for social factors that lead to alcohol intake will help the students in acknowledging the reasons
behind their behavior with the drinks. The entire research will aid them in regulating their
High Schools and Universities. The findings of the study will assist high schools and
universities in recognizing and becoming aware of the difference in behavior when students are
and are not under the influence of alcohol at school. This will lead to a better understanding of
students through the possible factors that cause them to drink. These schools will be able to
conduct specific programs and give sufficient instructions to help students in controlling their
alcohol consumption so that it may not affect their academic performance and school
environment functions.
Bars and Restaurants. Through this research, the effects of alcohol consumption to the
cognitive function of students are determined; how they perceive and process while under the
influence of alcohol will be looked into. This may help businesses determine the amount of beer
they can give their customers before risk factors are increased. This will help them create a safer
environment for everyone involved. Violence occurs when arguments and physical fights begin–
a situation that bars and restaurants would want to avoid. This may also encourage bar owners
to implement or strengthen the entrance policy wherein the grade 12 students have to show
their IDs to prove that they are of legal age to consume alcoholic beverages.
The scope of the research focuses on grade 12 students in Silliman University Senior
High School and the repercussions caused by alcohol consumption to their overall well-being. It
shall not be generalized as a study on the university or country’s entire student population.
Moreover, it is specific to the grade 12 students’ well-being such as their physical, physiological,
emotional, and mental health. To further understand their behavior when it comes to alcoholic

Methods
Research Design
Since the researchers are interested in the participants' unique experiences, thoughts,
feelings, and opinions regarding the phenomenon of how alcohol intake impacts the general
wellness of grade 12 students at Silliman University, a qualitative study methodology will be
followed. Specifically, phenomenology is the most suitable research design. After gathering the
necessary data, notable discoveries from the participants’ perspectives and experiences will be
collated to deduce the effects of alcoholic beverages on their overall well-being along with
reasons as to why.
Research Environment
The research will be conducted at Silliman University during the first semester of the
academic year 2022-2023. The best research environment for the study is Silliman University.
Given the wide range of strands in the senior high school department, it is ensured that the
students’ everyday experiences, especially in education-related matters and social factors, are
varied. To add, there is a significantly higher number of senior students in the university
compared to other schools. With this, the researchers are able to select a big number of
respondents which is favorable to the study as more data gathered would mean increased
Research Respondents
The researchers’ respondents are grade 12 students from the Silliman University Senior
High School who consume different alcoholic beverages. As the respondents, these students
are expected to be of legal age– 18 years old and above. A total of 788 grade 12 students are
currently enrolled in Silliman University in the first semester of the academic year 2022-2023.
The researchers will be using a purposive sampling method considering that the respondents
already have prior knowledge and a clear view on the phenomenon or research problems that
study comprises. 10 will be the minimum number of students who will be chosen to participate
in the interviews.
Research Instruments
The first research instrument is a pre-survey form. The pre-survey is a series of basic
questions intended to gather information from the respondents. It is an efficient instrument for
data collection because it is inexpensive and limits biases. Moreover, this will include items and
questions asking for the necessary information such as name, age, email address, and whether
or not they consume alcoholic beverages. This allows the researchers to select their
respondents while ensuring confidentiality. For the data gathering portion, the researchers will
be making an original set of open-ended questions based on the study’s objectives. These
questions will be asked to the participants in the one-on-one interviews. In the interviews, the
researchers will actively ask the respondents for their answers. This includes the intensive
open-ended interview questions from the original questionnaire which will be asked to each
respondent individually. Meeting with the respondents allows for more authentic and thorough
answers. Moreover, this will be done either online or in-person depending on the availability
In order to know the students’ perspectives, the researchers will gather and analyze the
data with the use of thematic analysis. Key features, topics, ideas, and meaning patterns will be
summarized to give emphasis and address the research or say something about the issue.
Thematic analysis is a methodology for analyzing qualitative data. It is usually used to describe a

Google form via email and other messaging applications that will ask for their basic information
and for alcoholic beverage consumption experience. Once the required number of responses
has been obtained, the researchers will identify and list the students who consume alcoholic
beverages. Next, the researchers will send out an interview request letter and a
research-informed consent form to the students who indicated that they consume alcoholic
beverages through email, messaging apps, or phone numbers. Within the interview request
letter, the students will be able to view and select from a variety of interview dates and time
slots. Along with this, the research-informed consent form will be provided to be filled up and
signed. The consent form is critical because it informs respondents about the purpose of the
research and the processes that the data gathered from them will go through. This will serve as
the researchers' permission to use their data for the study. Lastly, respondents who agree to an
interview will be met one-by-one by the researchers, either in person or online. If it is done
online, it will be conducted through Google Meet, Zoom, and other online platforms. On the
other hand, in-person or face-to-face interviews will include a meetup at a place favorable for
both interviewer and interviewee. The respondents may be able to choose which way is most
convenient for them. The questionnaire containing the researchers' original questions will be
used. In preparation for data analysis, responses will be recorded and transcribed.
Ethical Considerations
credibility in carrying it out in the most ethical manner. When interacting with people and
various test subjects, ethical considerations are a set of rules and values that must be followed.
The ethical considerations ensure that neither party suffers any harm; the research process
study-related behavior and action. Ethical considerations are required as it involves individuals,
which in this study are mainly grade 12 students. Confidentiality, honesty, consent, and
cautiousness are among the current study's ethical considerations. The first ethical
consideration is confidentiality, which stipulates that only the researchers will have access to
any information provided by the participants. The paper shall not have any identifying
information with regards to the participants. The output will only contain the necessary data
for the study. Honesty is also ensured as the study will be made accurate in every way– the data
citations, and verifiable methods are attached. Consent will also be guaranteed to make sure
the researchers’ priority is to respect the privacy, dignity, and opinions of their participants. Last
but not least, the consideration for cautiousness means that the researchers will be observant
about avoiding mistakes by critically and carefully examining all of the relevant data,
Physical and Physiological Changes. A total of four questions were crafted to determine
the effects of alcohol consumption on the physical and physiological condition of grade 12
students in Silliman University. There were two questions about physical condition and two
more on physiology. The majority of the respondents said that they tend to become more
energetic, lively, active, and hyper when under the influence of alcohol. One even claimed that
he/she would do things that he/she would never do in a sober state. However, there were two
responses that were the opposite from the rest. They stated, “I always have this urge to sit
down on the ground, not on the chair but on the ground” and “If I drink, normally, I’m good,
however, when I drink too much, I stay still, but that’s just on very rare occasions.” When asked
if they noticed any changes in the external parts of their body whenever under the influence, a
constant response was the skin turning red. One respondent reported getting rashes at times.
Another said that he/she would be in a more flustered and tired appearance. There was also a
respondent that shared that he/she gets bloated. A particular respondent shared, “I
experienced being sick for 2 days after my first time drinking alcohol, including sore throat and
numbness in my body wherein I can’t stand anymore, but after that, I did not experience
anything like these anymore on my succeeding drinks.” Some respondents said that they do not
feel any changes in their bodies despite having an amount of alcohol in their systems. Almost all
of the respondents answered that alcohol has not caused any positive or negative changes to
their bodies. The only notable response was, “ I drink wine, they say it’s good for the heart.” In
terms of hangover symptoms, all of the respondents reported that they experienced such. The
symptoms they mentioned included stomach pain, headache, nausea, fatigue, muscle aches,
and severe dehydration. One respondent shared, “Based on my understanding, I experience
these because alcohol has properties that really take an effect on the body, chemical changes,
the alcohol does something with your body, they interact with it and manipulate you.”
Mental and Emotional Changes. Two questions were made to determine the mental
and emotional changes grade 12 students of Silliman University undergo when under the
influence of alcohol. Many of the respondents answered that drinking alcohol reduces stress
brought on by school or personal obligations. It allows them to temporarily forget problems and
calm down. Some also shared that alcohol helps them express themselves. One respondent
said, “Yes, I feel like it (alcohol) helps a lot, it’s like an escape, like alternative happiness.”
Another respondent shared, “I get this confidence boost and it helps me feel like the stress is
said, “No, because there are many ways to help with my thoughts and stresses about school
and/or life for me, I would rather play sports than drink alcohol.” A different respondent
claimed, “It might give you a brief escape but at the end of the day, you still have to face life.”
Once the researchers questioned the interviewees about their emotions during and after
drinking alcohol, they responded that they felt either happy, sad, or just the same as they were
before. They were asked to explain as to why these sudden emotions kick in when drunk. A
respondent explained, "When I drink I feel happy, I'm pretty sure the reason behind it is the
alcohol that affects my system." Another respondent said, “My emotional condition during
drinking alcohol was that it was soothing, after it was not.” Others stated, “The emotions during
and after are pretty similar, during drinking I’m overjoyed and after drinking alcohol is still the
same but I start to question if what I’m doing is right,” “During I feel happy in a way, you forget
everything, and after you drink it just comes back to the normal feeling,” “Usually I do get
happier like more a stress reliever for me, possibly the reason is the confidence boost,” and “I
feel happier because you get to drink and socialize with other people, after drinking, I feel very
tired.” For those who feel the opposite way, they shared, “The emotions I felt as I consumed or
while I was drinking were where I mainly felt sad and after, I felt a bit of regret and was just
relieved that it was all over,” “I most of the time drink when I’m sad or stressed and I regret it
afterward, but at the same time it is fine with me because at last I happily burst all my emotions
There are clear differences in physical and physiological state as the effects of alcohol
use take over. The respondents of grade 12 at Silliman University have dealt with some of the
aftereffects of drinking. According to the results, a sudden burst of energy makes them act
hyper and lively during the event of drinking. This can be connected to the findings that the
students drink to temporarily forget about the problems they are faced with. Drinking alcoholic
beverages gives them some time to enjoy and unwind. Admittedly, the students return to their
pre-drinking state afterwards. Despite having to deal with their problems once again, they are
rather glad that they were able to release their stress for a short while. According to the study
by Yakam (2021), drinking alcohol is a technique to "blow off steam" or escape from personal or
academic problems, relieving tension, and gaining relaxation. After drinking, all students
experience hangover symptoms. Such symptoms are the human body’s ways of manifesting the
effects of the alcohol the beverage contained. These may include bloatedness, stomach pain,
express the emotions that couldn't when sober. The vast majority of the students interviewed
said they drink alcohol occasionally just to calm down. The focus of the 2019 study by Solbjrg
Myrtveit, Marit Knapstad, Kristin Askeland, and Jens Skogen was to investigate the connection
between drinking and social and emotional isolation as well as other elements that may have an
impact on mental health and happiness in daily life. Their study stated that the majority of their
students frequently experience the benefits of drinking, including the ability to socialize,
express oneself, and gain acceptance from others. This showed that students who are
consuming alcohol have the tendency to open up and that this is typically how they relieve
themselves. Their findings are no different from those in the current study. Whether the
students feel sad or happy during and after drinking, these are the effects of stress and worries
being released.
Reasons for Drinking and Perspectives on Drinking. Five interview questions were made
to answer the second research question. Majority of the respondents claimed that their friends
and families influenced them to drink. There were also some who shared that their own
curiosity made them start drinking. A particular respondent said, “[I influenced] myself because
I'm curious about what drinking feels like or how it tastes like.” Another notable answer was, “I
guess I was influenced by the people on social media, shows, and movies because they told me
to drink alcohol since it’s fun.” Reasoning that they are already of legal age, most of the
respondents perceive drinking as a normal thing to do. One respondent shared, “As I got older, I
started to see it (drinking) in a different line, I believe I wouldn't see drinking like such a bad
thing as I used to see it when I was younger.” Similar responses from other respondents would
be, “It felt weird at first because I'm used to seeing adults drink but now it feels normal,” and “I
didn’t feel any significant impact nor did It affect the way I perceive drinking, the fact that I’m
pretty much of legal age, as a human being, it’s a normal thing to do.” There were also answers
that deviated from the majority. One respondent said, “It was a bit shocking to see how many of
my friends were able to handle their drinking because I could barely handle it at all, probably
because it was my first time, but it really puts a perspective on things, reasons why people drink
alcohol and reasons why people avoid alcohol.” There was also one who shared, “My friends
from my past school were drinkers, I distance myself from them.” While some respondents do
not resort to drinking when challenged with school, there were also those who claimed that
they do. A certain respondent said, “Whenever I’m stressed, at some point, I would directly
drink, there’s this time I was [too] lazy to do my school work so I just drank.” Another said, “It
adds to the fun experience and the memories that are made, my school experience got better
because we’re creating this memory, when stressed in school this is my outlet.” Unexpectedly in
the interviews, many respondents said that school actually prevented them from drinking
alcoholic beverages. They said, “It (school) makes me wanna stop drinking,” “It rather controls
me to limit myself on drinking,” and “I don’t have a history of drinking because of school.” When
asked how their current life status affects their drinking behavior, the majority of the
respondents shared that they live relatively normal and happy lives. A few said they only drank
occasionally during events. However, there were also some who said otherwise. A respondent
said, “My life right now is so problematic and complicated so at some point I crave to drink for
me to forget for a bit but I don’t drink heavy alcohol.” In terms of community influence, 7 out of
the 10 respondents said that their drinking habits are not shaped by the people around them.
This is notable despite the fact that 8 out of the 10 respondents claimed that there are norms of
drinking in their own communities. The 3 respondents whose drinking habits were influenced
by their community said, “It did influence my drinking habit because again, I was curious,”
There’s a norm because it’s normalized, it did influence my drinking but not that much,” and
“Yes, it is very normal here, especially in our place, it influenced me in a way that I can’t go
home without drinking two bottles of tequila, so yes, my alcohol intake got worse because of
my community.”
There are only a few social factors that influence the regular alcohol consumption of
grade 12 students in Silliman University. However, it cannot be said that the small number of
factors is irrelevant. In the literature review done by Sudhinaraset, Wigglesworth, and Takeuchi
(2016), it was inferred that there are individual-level factors that are present in one’s own
home, work, and learning environment. Most of these are the people or happenings that the
students encounter on a regular basis. As said by most of the respondents, friends and family
introduced them to alcoholic beverages. Peer and family relationships are among the strongest
influences on the drinking behavior of adolescents since they are the people spent most time
with (Sudhinaraset et al., 2016, as cited in Bahr et al. 1995; White et al., 2006). There were also
respondents who claimed that they were not necessarily influenced by those surrounding them
as drinking was more of a personal choice. Their own curiosity on the feeling and taste of
alcohol made them start drinking such beverages. There was also a distinct response where it
was said that the media convinced the student to drink since it was conveyed as a fun thing to
do. This is a notable discovery which can be supported by the fact that media exposure
influences the social norms on drinking. Certain targeted alcohol marketing aim to impart
positive beliefs of drinking; that it is socially accepted and encouraged (Sudihinaraset et al.,
2016, as cited in Alaniz and Wilkes 1998; Hastings et al. 2005; McKee et al. 2011).
With their age already considered legal, drinking alcoholic beverages is perceptibly
common. The respondents see drinking as normal and acceptable. In their younger years,
alcoholic beverages were questionable, but reaching 18 gave them a form of permission to
drink. More factors and deeper reasons emerge on why people resort to alcohol– an
understanding they may not have had years prior. According to Yakam (2021), drinking is typical
in a student’s life and has become a medium for fun and relieve stress in college. Although the
grade 12 level may not be college yet, it is arguably very close. Drinking is considered a way to
“blow off steam”, escape from school or personal problems, and relax. As one respondent said,
alcohol “adds fun to the experience” because it creates memories with friends. Other reasons
for drinking are peer pressure, leisure, and social acceptance. Social belongingness among
others can be gained through drinking (Yakam, 2021). The researchers theorized that problems
regarding school and current life statuses affect the drinking behavior of the respondents; these
factors might push them to drink more. The data gathered was divided as some respondents
claimed that issues with academics cause them to drink while some said that school actually
prevented them from consuming alcoholic beverages. Those with school problems use alcohol
as a means to temporarily forget problems, given that the beverage has ways of altering one’s
physical and mental state. In terms of intervention, school was effective to some. These
respondents only drank occasionally. Especially in the earlier years of high school, some subjects
included the discussion of the negative effects of alcohol to the human body and even the
community. However, the reasons of some respondents cannot be disregarded as their
problems in life caused them to drink. Referencing what one respondent said, his/her life is so
complicated that a craving to drink alcoholic beverages takes over. The status of alcohol as a
norm in the community is also a major factor. Certain neighborhood characteristics and
Alaniz and Wilkes 1998; Hastings et al. 2005; McKee et al. 2011). While it is true that most of
the respondents live in communities where the consumption of alcohol is widely accepted, they
were not necessarily influenced. For the few who were indeed influenced, the sight of people
The data consists of constantly contradicting answers, but the researchers presume that
the advertisement or introduction of alcohol, regardless of the person or means that did so, as
a way of enjoyment and forgetting problems pushed many of the grade 12 students to start
drinking. If students rely on alcohol too much and drink it whenever faced with difficulty, it
becomes a major concern. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism
(n.d.), too much alcohol intake can lead to illnesses and diseases such as Wernicke-Korsakoff
Syndrome, liver and heart diseases, erratic sleep patterns, drastic weight loss, and even coma in
extreme cases. Alcoholism is also another problem to state. Given that school made an
intervention, it was discovered in the study that the majority of the students already know their
limits when it comes to alcohol consumption. They shared that even if they drink to unwind or
have cravings to go out and drink, they are aware of the amount that they can intake.
Critical Thinking, Reasoning Abilities, and Memory. To answer the third research
question, interview questions were divided into sub-parts with each tackling a specific type of
cognitive function. Interview questions were made in sub-parts wherein each had a varying
number of questions. The majority of the respondents said that their critical thinking was
altered under the influence of alcohol while there were also a certain 2 that stated otherwise. A
particular respondent said, “Usually, when I wanted to do something, I would think about it
over and over again, but when I was under the influence, I didn’t think at all about whatever
actions I did, compared to when I am not under the influence, I would go over a process of
weighing down my options.” Descriptions of the other respondents included, “My brain is not
that stable or can’t think rationally in terms of deciding, and I mostly do things that disregarded
the consequences when I’m under the influence of alcohol,” “When I drink alcohol, I don't trust
myself much,” and “[When under the influence] I feel like anything is possible”. The
respondents further claimed that they are in a better state of mind to think, solve problems,
and make decisions when not under the influence. The two answers that deviated from the rest
stated that, “I can make the right decisions when I'm under the influence of alcohol. It's like I
didn't even drink at all,” and “I would think of the consequences of my actions. I would apply
many variables like beliefs, traditions, and the people around me. It would be easier for me to
control problems but harder for me to resolve them”. For reasoning abilities, most of the
respondents stated that alcohol caused negative changes in them. An example was when a
respondent shared, “I have experienced negativity since I lie.” Two other respondents also said
that they are not able to reason out or express themselves well when under the influence. Two
respondents shared rather positive effects of alcohol on their reasoning abilities. One
respondent quoted, “I become more honest, I speak about my problems better, it gives me the
understanding to reason out myself.” Another said, “When I’m under the influence of alcohol I
get to express myself more.” He/she further explained that this is not something he/she can do
when sober. There was one notable answer wherein a respondent stated, “If someone wants to
do something impulsive, I will encourage it because you know, you only live once.” In terms of
memory, effects of alcohol were discovered. The majority of the participants stated that the
change in their memory depended on the amount of alcohol they drank. Over 8 out of the 10
respondents stated that they could still remember past and recent matters in detail despite the
effects of the alcoholic beverage they drank. One respondent said, “I remembered pretty well
under the influence, I would remember everything clearly, I [also] remember what happened
when I was under the influence and afterward.” Another respondent stated, "So far in my
experiences, I can remember almost everything I did or said when I’m under the influence of
alcohol.” A similar response would be, “I can recall every little detail that happened.” The
statements infer that some students still do remember well. However, most of them just drank a
small amount of alcohol– a variable that needs to be considered. The other two respondents
stated that they tend to forget some details they did at the event. A respondent stated, “I’m
terrible at remembering anything when under the influence of alcohol,” and the other said, “I
forget sometimes and sometimes I don’t.” These respondents stated that they might forget for a
certain amount of time but will remember details eventually. Moreover, all of the respondents
did not experience any severe adverse effects on their memory other than short-term memory
loss.
Attention Span, Behavior, and Attitude. Based on the results of the interviews, alcohol
can make a person unaware of their own words and actions. It may cause unself-conscious
actions and decisions and a limited attention span. Under the influence of alcohol, there is a
lack of being attentive and observant. However, it is also to note that the change depends on
the alcohol intake of a person. A participant stated that “I was definitely not attentive when
under the influence of alcohol, it was more of a sporadic thing for me where only the things
that interested me or what I wanted to do were of the utmost importance, so half of the time, I
was touching something that I find interesting, and the other half of the time I was just leaning
on to somebody crying.” Other results show that there are 8 out of 10 respondents who
claimed that they are not attentive and 2 who said they are. In the interview, a particular
respondent said, “I don’t remain attentive when under the influence of alcohol, it depends on
how much I drink, when tipsy, I still can, it’s [still] better when there’s no alcohol since I’m fully
attentive.” The other respondents who stated that they were not attentive mostly revealed that
they drank a heavy amount of alcohol. The other 2 who were attentive stated that “Actually, I’m
very attentive when I’m under the influence of alcohol. When I bring my phone somewhere and
I’m very drunk, I can't go home without finding my phone first, compared to when I’m sober, I’m
more attentive” and “When I'm drunk, I'm hyper and pay attention to what people say, just like
when I'm not drunk.” These 2 are presumed to have high alcohol tolerance. For being
responsive, there were 8 out of 10 who said they remain responsive to those around them and
2 who do not. One of the 8 said, “I could still talk, nod my head, and I could sort of make
decisions, but mainly [I] nodded my head or I just repeated the words yes or no.” Most of them
stated that they were responsive without thinking it out. Another respondent said, “When I’m
sober, I’m introverted, and when I’m drunk, I become extroverted, I talk to everyone.” For the
other 2 who are not responsive when under the influence, they stated that “I don’t think I can
be responsive when I’m under the influence of alcohol, I would probably sleep instead” and
“The thing is, I try my best to be responsive, however, I also notice that even though I think I try
myself.” “I may already be closing my eyes or looking at something else, since I’m already drunk,
I cannot really focus on anything anymore, I try to respond to conversations but it’s not really
something well thought of in some way,” the second respondent added. There are 7 out of 10
respondents who are well aware, 2 who are partially aware, and 1 that is not aware of their
surroundings when under the influence of alcohol. One of the 7 respondents stated, “I am
aware of what’s happening, but I do not take part in them, I try to distance myself, but I do see
what’s happening.” All of the 7 respondents gave answers containing the same idea.
Meanwhile, the 2 respondents who were only partially aware stated, “A lot of things were
happening around me, but I was mainly focused on the thing that I wanted to do at the
moment” and “If I’m tipsy, I’m 80% unaware, unlike when I’m drunk I’m 100% unaware.” The 1
respondent who wasn’t aware said, “I’m not so aware since I’m so focused on drinking.”
Mainly, alcohol unites with the person’s attitude and behavior. As alleged by the respondents,
when they are under the influence of alcohol, they can express more of themselves freely,
verbally and physically. One of the respondents mentioned, “My behavior under the influence
was sporadic, more definitely emotionally vulnerable, but I felt more light in a sense like all
these emotions would come in and out of me, it was like I didn’t have anything to lose at that
moment, and I could express myself freely. it was different when I was not under the influence
because I would keep my emotions in check and tempered at all costs.” Majority of the
respondents relayed that they felt more hyper than their usual behavior. One said, “As an
extrovert, I’m still a hyper person even when I’m sober and when I’m under the influence of
alcohol, it’s a bit more extra [hyper] and honest in my thoughts and opinions, I can still weigh
things down however, when I’m drunk, I just straightly say things that I want.” Similarly, a
particular respondent also stated, “Yes, as an introvert before, I became extroverted, I became
more interactive with people.” The same statement came from the other respondents. One
said, “I'm definitely in a better mood and like laughing more, smiling more, and joking more
when under the influence, when I'm not, I find myself focusing more on my academics.”
However, following these statements, some respondents mentioned that they preferably stay
calm when alcohol hits. One respondent said, “I'm always chill when I'm under the influence of
alcohol.” Another said, “I become more sleepy and tired.” When asked to describe scenarios of
how they behaved before and after consuming alcohol, one of the respondents answered,
“Alcohol gives you the confidence that you don’t have when you are sober, for me, confidence
is quite a positive one because I gain more friends.” Notably, most of the respondent's answers
are similar. Another said, “I drank alcohol a lot, before that, I was still okay, but I was dealing
with problems and chose to drink alcohol to just get it out of my system, I ended up drinking too
much and did a lot of stupid stuff.” It is noticeable that students are most likely to drink when
they want to freshen up their minds. As said by one of the respondents, “ It’s so stressful and
I'm really overworking my body, and [when] I want that stress reliever, then I’ll go drink and
relax, I believe I deserve this after my hard work.” “My attitude is calm, and I’m not thinking
about the future, my grades, or what’s for tomorrow. I’m just enjoying the moment I'm in now,”
he/she added. As the results indicate how alcohol changes their attitude and behavior both
positively and negatively, 8 out of 10 respondents shared the same experiences, expressing
their thoughts, being hyper, and unleashing their problems. In comparison, 2 respondents
concluded they ended up being “self-possessed” when under the influence of alcohol.
There are differences in cognitive function when Grade 12 students are and are not
under the influence of alcohol. It was confirmed in the study that alcohol indeed has notable
effects on a person’s critical thinking, reasoning abilities, and memory. In terms of critical
thinking, it was found that alcoholic beverages make students reach impulse or rash decisions.
Alcohol is considered a drug that could affect a person’s mind. Carlyle (2017) stated that alcohol
inhibits the brain’s ability to absorb new information. The process of weighing down one’s
options, decisions, and consequences before doing such actions is constrained. With the
influence of alcohol, one makes decisions swiftly and does not consider the possible
consequences and safer options or choices. The students are aware of their shortened critical
thinking when under the influence; they further explained that they do not trust themselves
much when in such a state. In a sober state, there are clearer thought processes and
decision-making abilities. Moreover, not only critical thinking is altered, but also reasoning
abilities. It was found that alcohol may have both positive and negative impacts on the
reasoning abilities of a person– it either becomes more disdained or improved. A few students
revealed that they are unable to reason out well and even end up saying lies. On the other
hand, some are able to express themselves more and reason out better when under the
influence of alcohol. The majority of the respondents said that they could still remember past
and recent matters in detail when under the influence of alcohol. The results can be
summarized into the answer of one respondent when he/she stated, “I remembered pretty well
under the influence, I would remember everything clearly, I [also] remember what happened
when I was under the influence and afterward.” These findings directly contradict the literature
that alcohol weakens the memory due to the adverse effects of the beverage (Chabu et al.,
2021, as cited in the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2015). However, it also
does not align with the study published by Molly in 2017 wherein it was discovered that
drinking alcohol improves recall of learning that occurred prior to a drinking session and that
this effect is stronger with higher alcohol consumption. The current study’s respondents just
remember matters as they usually do. Despite this, the results have its limitations as the
respondents claimed that their almost perfect recall and memory even when under the
influence only occurs when they drink a small amount. The other respondents who had
different answers stated that they tend to forget a few things when they drink. There is no
telling whether this is when they drank a small or significant amount of alcohol. The researchers
did not include any questions asking whether the data gathered from the respondents was from
when they drank a certain amount. Thus, the results of the interviews lack the consideration for
Alcohol makes a person unaware of their own words and actions, as discovered in the
current study. It may cause unself-aware actions and a limited attention span. The results
showed that 8 out of 10 respondents are not attentive, while 2 are attentive when under the
influence of alcohol. To put it briefly, the majority of the respondents remain conscious but
become unaware of the exact happenings when they consume alcoholic beverages. Based on
the outcomes of the study, alcohol also changes a person’s character and manner of behaving.
Most of the respondents' insights were about how they act differently from their usual selves
when influenced by alcohol. It was found that one’s behaviors and attitude are inconsistent
because of the intake of alcoholic beverages. Alcohol is considered a drug that could affect a
person’s mind and physical body depending on how much alcohol is consumed (As mentioned
in a particular study by Onyebuchukwu, Sholarin, & Emerenwa., 2015, as cited in Gureje et al.
2007). With this, there are common answers from the respondents stating that they barely
know how to handle the effects of the alcohol they intake. They could not care less about what
would happen in the future and expressed themselves freely at the moment as alcohol gave
them confidence and helped them unleash the thoughts that kept bothering them in life and
straightly say things that they wanted to. Notably, respondents forename alcohol as their
alternative escape from stress and problems. The moment the alcohol runs in their bodies, their
moods automatically change and confidence is boosted which makes them socialize with
others. This is seen as a positive effect as it is crucial for them to gain more friends which is
different when they are not under the influence of alcohol. Commonly, respondents claimed
that when they are sober, they are mindful and remain respectful through their actions and
words and focus more on academics. Some of the respondents were also sure that they could
control themselves more in a mannered way. The majority of the students found that alcohol
affected their perspective and attitude. Despite knowing it's bad for one’s health, they still see
University. It has affected the respondent's physical, physiological, emotional, and mental
conditions. First and foremost, physical condition is one’s direct appearance and includes
aspects such as activeness and bodily changes. As discovered in the study, alcohol has effects on
bodily functions, both external and internal. Physiological condition refers to the functions of
the body’s parts and organs. A student may experience dizziness, hunger, and stomach pain
under the influence of alcohol. Thus, a hangover is evident. It was also found that drinking
alcohol is one of the students' coping mechanisms for their mental and emotional concerns.
Alcohol helps some of the students with their stresses about school and life. They drink alcohol
to temporarily escape from reality, in order to express their emotions freely, and experience
momentary euphoria.
Each person may have different perspectives about drinking and its effects on a person.
The effects manifest not only in the physical, physiological, mental, and emotional condition of a
person, but also in the various areas of cognitive function. During the influence of alcohol, the
students make impulsive decisions and actions in which lying or false words may be included.
Memory is also slightly affected by the consumption of alcohol, although there is a lack of
evidence to support the claim. While the majority reported that their recall of past and recent
matters worked fine, it was only when they took a small amount of alcohol. The respondents
may or may not forget what they did during the event when a significant amount of alcohol was
taken. Alcohol also affects a person’s attention span. Under the influence, a person’s attention
span is short or constantly shifting in which they may focus on something and on others briefly.
However, when not under the influence, full attention is guaranteed. Correspondingly, their
personality and manners toward their surroundings changes depending on how long the alcohol
lasted in their system. Most described themselves as becoming extroverts– when under the
influence of alcohol– from their true introverted nature in a sober state. Alcohol helps boost
their confidence to say what they want to voice out freely, do whatever they are unable to
It should not come as a surprise that those of legal age are more likely to behave in
certain ways with alcohol since they already see it is acceptable. Drinking alcohol is not only a
self-decision out of curiosity, but also an influence by the media, peers, and even family. Such
factors influenced the start and shaped the behavior of students when it comes to alcohol. It
was also discovered that lessons in school are an effective way to intervene and prevent too
much alcohol intake, which may further lead to alcoholism. There is an educated presumption
that they are already aware of how it affects their own physique, physiological, emotional,
mental condition, critical thinking, memory, attention span, reasoning, behavior, and attitude.
They also know the influences that may have contributed to their drinking behavior and their
It is to point out that the current study has its limitations. First off, a small number of
respondents participated in it, particularly 10 out of 830 students in Silliman University’s grade
12 population. Therefore, the results cannot be considered precise in all contexts. Nevertheless,
the expounded insights helped the researchers’ reach the objectives of the study. Additionally,
the research design used was phenomenology which heavily depends on the notable findings
from the participants’ perspectives and personal records when consuming alcohol. Despite
these limitations, the researchers found the needed information and effectively concluded how
alcohol consumption affects the overall well-being of some grade 12 students from Silliman
University.
Recommendation
The study’s researchers were made aware of the effects, both positive and negative, that
alcohol may cause on the overall well-being of grade 12 students. The researchers have also
come to understand the various reasons as to why students consider alcohol a need at times of
difficulty. To add, the factors that lead to the introduction of alcohol were also uncovered. After
carefully analyzing the insights and experiences of the study’s respondents, the researchers
suggest that grade 12 students should find other alternatives of releasing stress, aside from the
While the researchers acknowledge the fact that the students are already of legal age
and are well-aware of their drinking limits, resorting to alcohol every time a problem arises can
turn into a habit that one will find a hard time letting go of. Too much consecutive alcohol intake
may lead to alcoholism and the development of serious disease and illnesses. Thus, other stress
coping mechanisms are heavily recommended. Students, especially those who just recently
turned 18 and started drinking, should continue familiarizing themselves with their own
behavior and attitude when it comes to alcohol to ensure not only his/her own safety, but those
around as well.
