One of the ASX listed company ‘CSR Limited’ an Australian based company that deals with the
construction of houses and corporate buildings around Australia and New Zealand is one of the
biggest names when it comes to the construction sector. The sustainability report presented by
the company in 2021 shows that the company is focused on four main topics for sustainable
development. The company focuses on its employee with the advancement in workplace health
and safety of the workers. The report also presents climate change topic where the company’s
work will not affect the climate change and if so, the organization is willing to reduce the mass
consumption of materials to reduce this problem as well by managing the risk and opportunities
of climate change. This will then positively affect the environment which is good for everyone
(CSR Limited, 2021).

The above figure represents the company’s 10 years goal of sustainability development where
the company managed to reduce the waste production from the construction and developing
sites by 57% which is more than half of the total waste managed from the production. Water
consumption was also reduced to 13% since the campaign started. Energy consumption was
brought down to 24% which helps in the contribution of the climate change and the production
of CO2 gas which is harmful gas and not good for surrounding was reduced down to 32% which
shows the company is moving towards the path of sustainable development.
Another ASX listed company Woolworths Group Limited is a chain of multiple companies with
the largest individual business chain like supermarket, financial services with linked hotel
services and many more chains with the revenue of $40.37 billion dollars as of 2021
(CompaniesMarketCap.com, 2021). The company also is involved in the sustainability
development and has presented its sustainable report for 2021.

The company has promised to work with 100% green electricity by the year 2025 as the plan for
the company is to use solar energy as primary source for electricity. Food waste is also to be
managed and to keep it at zero percentage to landfill by 2025 as the company promises on the
sustainability report for 2021. By the year 2050, the company has ensured that the carbon
emission would positively affect the environment that will have positive side effects as well as to
practice a responsible stewardship of the natural resources. As for the product side, the
company has promised to increase healthier choices for the customers and the packaging
would be 100% sustainable which will also be handled by the company itself (Woolworths
Group Limited, 2021). For the employees and human resources, the company has promised to
be the workplace as inclusive as possible as the company’s motive to support any gender and
any community in the workplace with proper respect, relationship and opportunities for
everyone.
Similarly, another ASX listed Australian company called ‘Telstra’, a telecommunication company
that deals with the mobile network, internet provider, television broadcaster, is a leading
company in Australia in the sector. Established in 2011, the company has managed to mark up
a revenue of $21.56 billion AUD in 2021 (statista, 2021). The focus of the company to achieve
sustainable goals are to control and progress on the energy use and contribute to the climate
change cause. The other one is resource efficiency where the company promises to manage
resource consumption and management.
The company has designed a plan to go sustainable, and like any other companies the plans
are somehow similar to one another, like Woolworths, Telstra also has mentioned climate
change and efficient energy use in the report. In 2020, the company managed to become
Australia’s biggest carbon offset purchasing programs and was successful. By 2025 the
company has also mentioned to become 100% renewable energy source for consumption and
by 2030 to reduce the obsolete emission down to 50%. For resource efficiency program the
company has decided to recycle or reduce 500,00 mobile phones and equipment per year to
2025. The branding packaging would be made up of 100% recyclable material and has ensured
that would be fully recycled by 2022. And the final important point made was to reduce network
waste recycling rate down to 85% by 2025. This is the path that Telstra has craved to go
sustainable and fully sustainable by 2025 as per the report (Telstras, 2022).
For the final evaluation for the report, ‘Alumina Limited’ an Australian based company, leading
company listed in the ASX list has been performing mining and refining of aluminum and is the
western world’s biggest alumina business. The company focuses on the local development as in
economic contribution to the people, environment and social cause and other being the
environment itself. The company’s sustainable goal is to manage the overall economic, social,
cultural and environmental impacts on the local communities. This is to be done under the
protection of human right and managing health sectors and safety implications with the final aim
of investment in the local communities. The economic contribution will help in the economic
value generated to be paid as taxes and local employment wages are to be benefited.
Adaptation and mitigation of climate change problems and its management to be handled by the
company itself. Efficient use of renewable energy sources and effective management on energy
consumption which are associated with the greenhouse gas emission from the operation carried
out from the company’s side (Alumina Limited, 2021).
To sum up the hypothesis, overall, every company in Australia who are in bigger leagues have
been involving in sustainable cause since a decade or more. They share the same outcome of
having a company and having a sustainable cause for the people and the environment. Not only
in bigger companies, but even small-scale industries should also follow the sustainable trend so
that every companies in Australia can be renounced as sustainable company.
