English Through The Story

Lesson 9: Healing a Paralyzed Man

(Mark 2:…)
Language Focus: Consonant Differentiations

Students will be able to…

- Demonstrate listening comprehension of the story
- Describe the attributes of a good friend
- Decern the difference between the letters F and V in vocabulary words

Intro Activity: Pay It Forward

- Show “Pay It Forward” video clip for class. Ask how it made them feel. Point
out that when we receive an act of kindness it can inspire us to be kind to
others. This video was just small acts of kindness, but today’s story is about a
big act of love among friends.

Activity #1: Review & Connect

- See if anyone remember last week’s story and can summarize it quickly.
Briefly connect last week’s story to this week’s story, using the Connecting
the Dots if necessary.
Activity #2: New Vocabulary
- Introduce new vocabulary that your students might not have learned yet.
Have them record the new words in their composition notebooks.

Activity #3: Healing Story (Listening)

- Read the Healing Story to the class as they listen. Allow them to take
notes as you do.

Activity #4: Healing Story Cloze (Listening Comprehension)

- After you read the story, pass out the listening comprehension cloze and
have the students fill them out individually. After they finish, pair them up
to discuss their answers. Then go over the answers as a class.
Activity #5: Friendship Circle Activity
- Hand out the Friendship Circle Activity page. Have students fill it out.
After filling out the worksheet, group students together in groups of 3-4
to discuss
o Are there more friends in the middle or outer circles?
o Why might that be?

Activity #6: What Makes a Friend Activity

- In the same groups, ask students to write on one piece of paper in large
letters words associated with the word “friendship.” Post the pictures up
on the walls. Tell groups, “Read the papers and write down any qualities
you didn’t have.” Check for understanding of all posted words. Each
learner put a check by 3 qualities they think are most important. Go back
to groups. Decide together which 3 qualities are most important and why.
Have each group report to the class.

Activity #7: Consonant Drill – F/V

- On white board, black board, or on large sheet of paper on the wall, draw
out a checkerboard of 16 squares. In each square, write out F/V words in
random order. Divide class into two teams. Have each team select a
representative. Give each rep a rolled up newspaper. Stand at back of
class and read out a F/V word from the list. Whichever rep hits the correct
word on the board with their newspaper first gets a point. After 3 words,
rotate students.

Activity #8: Retelling the Story

- Divide students into groups. Have each student in the group retell the
Healing story to each other in their own words.
o What do you learn about Jesus in this story?
o What did you learn about people in this story?
o What is one way that you will help someone else this week?

Questions:
Contingency: Am I a Good Friend?
- Have students write in their composition notebooks: What is the most
important quality of friendship? Am I a good friend? Why or why not? In
what ways can I be a better friend?
