Assignment no. 6A Name:
Refractometry and Year and Sec. Date:
Polarimetry

Polarimetry

Calculate the [a] (specific rotation of the following using the sodium D line at 25 C in a 1 dm cell

    a. Phenyleprine HCl 2.6% in 0.1M HCl with observed rotation of -0.98 degrees

    b. Timolol 9.8% in 1M HCl with observed rotation of -0.59 degrees

Refractometry:

n = c/v

where c = 2.99792458 x 108m/s.

r = (n2 -1) / (n2 + 2) d

1. The speed of light in an unknown medium is measured to be 2.76 x 108 m/s.  (a)  What is the
index of refraction of the medium?

2. Optical fibers are generally composed of silica, with an index of refraction around 1.44.  (a)
How fast does light travel in a silica fiber?

3. What is the speed of light in chloroform, which has n = 1.51?

4. What is the specific refraction of a parenteral solution with n= 1.0281 and a density of 0.893
g/ml?
