LESSON 8 JESUS HEALS OUR INFIRMITIES

GOD’S STORY

READ MARK 5:21-43 Jesus Raises the daughter of Jairus

JESUS CHRIST BECAME MAN FOR OUR SALVATION

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, became man “for us and for our salvation” (cf.1 Jn 4:14). When we speak of Jesus
as the savior of the world, we basically affirm the following truths: First, Jesus Christ is an offering for our sins
(cf. Jn.4:10). Through his death on the cross, Jesus Christ offered the perfect sacrifice for the expiation of our
sins. Second, Jesus Christ, in becoming man, revealed the Father’s great love for us. He came so that we may
have eternal life through Him ( cf. Jn 3:16). Third, Jesus Christ is our model of sanctity. When we live according
to the teachings and examples of Christ, we will “never stumble and will be allowed to enter the eternal
kingdom” (cf. 2 Pt 1:4).

St. Augustine preached : “He who was the Son of God, for you has become the Son of man, so that you who
were children of men, might become the children of God. Then he might give us of his good things; he
shared with us our infirmities” (CFC 476).

JESUS CHRIST HEALS OUR INFIRMITIES

One of Jesus Christ’s mission is to heal the sick. Luke 4:16-21 tells us,

When Jesus came to Nazareth, , where he had been brought up, he entered the
synagogue on the Sabbath, as he usually did. He stood up to read, and they handed
him the book of the prophet Isaiah.

Jesus then unrolled the scroll and found the place where it is written: “The Spirit of
the Lord is upon me. He has anointed me to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim
liberty to captives and new sight to the blind; to free the oppressed and to announce
the Lord’s year of mercy.”

Jesus then rolled up the scroll, gave it to the attendant and sat down; while the eyes
of all in the synagogue were fixed on him.

Then he said to them, “Today these prophetic words come true, even as you listen.”

Hence, Jesus Christ never refused to cure anyone who sought his help. However, the healing ministry of Jesus
Christ always entailed the forgiveness of sins, the healing of infirmities, and the “saving faith” of the person.

Jesus Christ knew that the Jews believed that sickness is a manifestation of sin. It is not surprising that the
Jews look at severe sickness as a punishment from God. The story of the blind man in John 9:1-34
demonstrates this:

As Jesus walked along, He saw a man who had been blind from birth. His disciples asked Him,” Master, , was
he born blind because of a sin of his, or of his parents?”

Jesus answered, “ Neither was it for his own nor for his parents’ sin. He was born blind so that God’s power
might be shown to him.”
Notice how Jesus saw the blindness of the man as not coming from sin but as an opportunity to show God’s
magnificence. Jesus, fulfills the prophesy of Isaiah ( see Luke 4:16-21) and cured the blind man. The people
were astonished for they saw the blind man that used to beg at the temple could now see. The man testified
that Jesus Christ cured him. The Pharisees were angry and questioned him. The man (who could now see) told
the Pharisees.

“ It is amazing that you don’t know where the man comes form, and yet he opened my eyes! We know that
God doesn’t listen to sinners, but if anyone honors God and does his will, God listens to him. Never, since the
world began, has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person who was born blind. If this man were
not from God, he could do nothing” ( Jn 9:30-33).

In healing the blind man, Jesus fulfilled the prophesy of Isaiah about the Messiah, brought glory to God, and
moved the blind man to a “ mature faith”. The blind man was not only able to use his visual faculty but also
“saw” that Jesus follows the will of God. Sadly, they who can physically see were actually “blind” to Jesus
Christ because of they lacked faith.

Jesus Christ healed the sick and consoled the suffering. In curing the infirm ( and bringing back to life those
who died from illnesses), Jesus brought peace and glad tidings to the people. this was shown in the narrative
about the death of the daughter of Jairus. While the people wept and wailed loudly, Jesus said to them, “Why
all this commotion and weeping? The child is not dead, but asleep” (cf. Mark 5:21-43). The healing power of
Jesus Christ overcomes the clutches of death.

JESUS CHRIST IS OUR STRENGTH AND CONSOLATION

On the other hand, sickness can bring us to a more mature Faith, helping us to discern what is really important
in our life, against all the superficial, passing attractions that so often dominate us. As Christians, our Faith
helps us to understand better the mystery of suffering and to bear pain more bravely. From Christ’s words, we
know that sickness has meaning and value for our own salvation and for others. We also know how Christ
loved the sick, and often healed them of their infirmities. (cf. IRA 1).

THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK

Is it possible for a sick person to be “healed” and yet still suffer from sickness? On the other end of the
spectrum, is it possible for a healthy man and woman to be sick? Quite possibly, yes. Man and woman are
“embodied spirits”. This means that there is unity in our body and soul (cf. CFC 689). Hence, our well being
does not rest on a strong and active physical body only but also on a sound mind and a soul that is in proper
disposition. CFC 1822 tells us , …this Sacrament of Anointing is healing in a special sense: it brings Christ’s
compassionate loving healing to bear on those suffering serious sickness (cf. CCC 1499).
