When we say "language," we mean the words you select to employ in your speech, therefore our

concentration is on spoken language by definition. Prior to written language, there was always spoken
language. According to Wrench, McCroskey, and Richmond, if you conceive of the human history of
language as a twelve-inch ruler, written or recorded language has only existed for the "last quarter of an
inch."
