JAPAN´S MOST FAMOUS DOG

Página 25
In front of the enormous Shibuya train station in Tokyo, there is a life-size bronze statue of a
dog. Even though the statue is very small when compared to the huge neon signs flashing, it
isn't difficult to find. It has been used as a meeting point since 1934 and today you will find
hundreds of people waiting there for their friends to arrive- just look for the crowds.

Hachiko, an Akita dog, was born in 1923 and brought to Tokyo in 1924. His owner, Professor
Eisaburo Uyeno and he were inseparable friends right from the start. Each day Hachiko would
accompany his owner, a professor at the Imperial University, to Shibuya train station when he
left for work. When he came back, the professor would always find the dog patiently waiting for
him. Sadly, the professor died suddenly at work in 1925 before he could return home.
Although Hachiko was still a young dog, the bond between him and his owner was very strong
and he continued to wait at the station every day. Sometimes, he would stay there for days at a
time, though some believe that he kept returning because of the food he was given by street
vendors. He became a familiar sight to commuters over time. In 1934, a statue of him was put
outside the station. In 1935, Hachiko died at the place he last saw his friend alive.

READING TIME
THE WILSONS' PARTY

Mr. and Mrs. Wilson invited all their friends and neighbours to a party last night. They
stayed home all day yesterday and prepared for the party.

In the morning the Wilson’s worked outside. Their daughter, Margaret, cleaned the
yard. Their son, Bob, painted the fence. Mrs. Wilson planted flowers in the garden,
and Mr. Wilson fixed their broken front steps.

In the afternoon the Wilson’s worked inside the house. Margaret washed the floors
and vacuumed the living room carpet. Bob dusted the furniture and cleaned the

basement. Mr. and Mrs. Wilson stayed in the kitchen all afternoon. He cooked
spaghetti for dinner, and she baked apple pies for dessert.

The Wilson’s finished all their work at six o'clock. Their house looked beautiful inside
and out!
The Wilson’s' guests arrived at about 7:30. After they arrived, they all sat in the living
room. They ate cheese and crackers, drank lemonade, and talked. Some people
talked about their children. Other people talked about the weather. And everyboy talked
about how beautiful the Wilson’s' house looked inside and out!

The Wilson’s served dinner in the dining room at 9:00. Everybody enjoyed the meal
very much. They liked Mr. Wilson's spaghetti and they "loved" Mrs. Wilson's apple pie.
In fact, everybody asked for seconds.
After dinner everybody sat in the living room again. First, Bob Wilson played the piano
and his sister, Margaret, sang. Then, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson showed a video of their trip
to Hawaii. After that, they turned on the music and everybody danced.

As you can see, the Wilson’s' guests enjoyed the party very much. In fact, nobody

Pompeii –

a town with a difference!

On your next trip to ltaly, why not visit the fantastic Roman town of Pompeii?
In the past, twenty thousand people lived in Pompeii in big houses with big
gardens. The Romans built roads in the town and there were many public
places like baths, amphitheatres, banks, and markets. There wasn’t any
electricity and people got up with the sun. For breakfast they had bread and
cheese. People started work very early and stopped at twelve o'clock for a
lunch of fish, bread, cake and fruit. In the afternoon people went to watch
the gladiators or to the public baths to wash and meet friends. In the
evening they often had dinner parties They were an important part of Roman
life. But life in Pompeii stopped in 79 AD when the volcano Vesuvius erupted.
Today you can see the town exactly as it was nearly two thousand years ago.
