Activity 3: Reflection Paper
There’s a lot of lessons that I’ve learned in this subject; values and beliefs to be considered
while engaging with different kinds of people by hearing all the literary work done by different
countries. However, one of the literary works that hit me is “The Bewail of Mother” by Dr.
Thongkham Onemanisone. This literary work inspired me since it awakens my inner being by
knowing what a mother-and-daughter relationship should be. This poem catches my attention
since from the title itself, it has an impact especially for what was happening in reality. We often
forget our mother’s sacrifices. I remember while discussing this topic, there was a short clip that
was played before it starts. It was about a boy who wants the attention of his mother but his
mother doesn’t show her love for his son. Meanwhile, at the end of the clip, when his mother died,
the boy discovered that his mother was saving up a lot for his future. It touches my heart since
there’s many small things that our mother/ parents gives without us noticing it. From the moment
that we are formed by our mother’s womb, carrying us for nine months, it’s already a big thing for
us. That’ why after hearing the poem, it reminds me of the sacrifice what our parents did for us.
In the first paragraph, in the line of “In particular when discovered about the past, It seems
a sharp knife is placed in my heart” it describes something that was discovered in the past which
may be the reason why the daughter turns her love into cold for her mother. However, in the
second paragraph, the sad truth about the relationship of the mother and daughter is sometimes
they are not directly proportional to each other. In the lines “When growing up she forgot the
mother's deed, what made her mind change?” This just shows that something changed her
daughter’s mind because of something. On the other hand, in the last paragraph, “even if she
doesn’t care but mother still beg, To hear sweet words saying here is my mother” the mother still
hopes that their relationship would still be like before. Furthermore, learning to give and appreciate
all things from what our parents has done for us is already so much for them.
