While Reading
Do you want be a judge someday? If not, who is the judge in the Philippines
that earns so much of your respect and admiration? What are his/her qualities that
you admire most? Is he/she a kind of judge who treats all equally without personal
gain?
Seriously, I don’t see myself becoming a lawyer someday because I’m not that
used on giving an advice or weighing things if it’s right or wrong legally. The judge in the
Philippines that earns so much of my respect and admiration is no other than Chief Justice
Maria Lourdes Sereno because even she had faced criticism from the administration of
President Rodrigo Duterte for expressing her criticism of his Philippine Drug War and also
faced an impeachment she still stand on what she thinks was right and never been
discourage to pursue it. She never did things just to have personal gain instead, she
thinks other people’s side and her hear their voice.

Answer the following questions below:
1. Characterize the crocodile.
The crocodile was so ungrateful or in Filipino term “walang utang na loob” on

what the cart-driver did to it just to save its life and so dishonest that after it had
drunk its fill and gained back strength it said that he tied it tightly that almost choked
it to death which is not true and just his way to give to it one of the oxen of the cart-
driver.
2. Who are the five judges? Describe each of them.
The five judges are the fisherman which was the first judge who was so fearful
on what the crocodile will do to him because it will try to bite him one day and he
can find no way to escape as he is a fisherman in the river; the one-armed old man
which was the second judge who is very angry with the other crocodile because
they had bitten off one of his arms; the lizard which was the third judge who judged
partially because of friendship; the monkey which was the fourth judge who judge
with partially as a result of ignorance and being fooled by bribes without deal; and
the rabbit was a wise and honest animal was the fifth judge who judged fairly
without the four prejudices.
3. Check the figurative words used in the story.
Figurative words that was used in the story are “It hard tears in his eyes due to
his miseries induced by having no food and water” “You tied me so tightly that
almost choked to death” “The crocodile was wedged so tightly that his eyes stuck
out.”
4. If you are going to be the judge on the situation?
If I am going to be the judge on the situation in this fiction, i will judge fairly as
what the rabbit did. I will not make any judgement just because I’m fear on what
the litigant will do to me, just because of hating someone who is close to him/her
or same as him/her, just because he/she is a friend of mine, and just because of
the bribes they offer to me. Instead, I will weigh all the informations that have been

said of the both party and make judgement based on the legal law we have
considering human law. Because we should not be bias and align everything on
the truth.
5. What is the moral lesson of the story?
The moral lesson of the story is that we should not give our full trust on
someone we do not know in the first place because in the end, they will reverse
the situation and make us wrong in the eyes of the other people. In everthing we
do, we should make a copy of it for us to have evidences that can be use in case
of emergency like you have been included in case like in the scenario in the fiction.
Also, we should not make any prejudice judgement because it will cause
someone’s life to be in a sorrow and have suffering for lifetime.
6. Relate the situation depicted in the story in a real life scenario
The situation I depicted in the story is when the monkey judged the case with
partially as a result of ignorance and being fooled by bribes without deal. It is
always been present in our real life scenario because when someone saw a crime
and the – offer him a money for him not say all the things he saw, he will
automatically shut his mouth and act like nothing happened.

Do you love yourself? How do you take care of yourself? Do you have self-care
management? Cite some of your routine. Is it important to maintain personal hygiene,
why, why not? Does it have impact in your overall personality?
Yes, I love myself. Taking care of oneself is way of showing it, having complete
hours of sleep and good hygiene every day, with proper meals at right time and regular
exercise (even just stretching every morning). It is very important to maintain personal
hygiene because it can really affects our health, in all other aspects as well, and you can
build confidence within yourself.
Answer the following questions below.
1. What descriptions can you give to the girl in the story?
For me, the girl in the story does not give importance to her physical hygiene;
she is untidy and unorganized, and even her place is in disorder and in mess.

2. Why do you think the girl has swarms of bed bugs and lice?
For me, the girl has swarms of bed bugs because of his untidy room, not
regularly wash her beddings and things in her room, and at the same time having
lice because she didn’t regularly take a bath nor clean herself, with no proper
hygiene.
3. Check the figurative words used in the story and explain its meaning.
The story used figurative words/phrases in the story and one of these is “end
of the world by fire comes” which means that there would be an end in the life as
the fire broke down unto them.
4. Are bugs and lice, friends or foe? Explain why.
For me, the bugs and lice are foe. They are angry at each other where the bugs
envied lice for its easy access for its food which is the girl’s blood that why they
didn’t help the frightened lice and they just laugh at it.
5. Relate and compare the girl in the story to the girls of this generation.
I can say that if we can compare the girl in the story between the girls in this
generation, there is a great difference. Girls of this generation seem very conscious
of their physical appearance while in the girl in the story didn’t mind her appearance
nor her hygiene as well.
6. What is the life lesson you may get from this story?
Self-care management is very important in all of us, not just girls but for
everybody. By maintaining proper hygiene means giving importance in oneself.
Also, in terms of the lice and bed bugs, you should not envy others, but and help
them who are in need, since karma is real.

THE TWO WOMEN SCRAMBLED FOR A BABY

While Reading
Based on the title, what sort of a story is "The Two Women scrambled for a
baby?" Why do you think so?

This one is a cliché, a classic plot. I guess everyone would agree that by just
reading the title itself, a certain plot about "two mothers claiming to be the real mother of
one child and they have to prove their claims in front of a judge or someone wise enough
to decide in an unexpected way," is what comes to our minds. The title says it all already,
and there is nothing more to expect on the flow of the story, but indeed a moral lesson
will be instilled in the readers' hearts and minds.
Answer the following questions perceptively below.
1. How will you describe the two women in the story?
The two women possess the nature of a mother who is willing to do everything
for the sake of her child. However, in the story, they differ in some ways. One of
the two mothers would do whatever it takes to bring back the presence of her dead
baby, even if it was through the presence of someone's child. It was so selfish of
her to steal someone's baby, but maybe she resorts to did so because it might be
triggered by the sudden loss of her newborn baby. On the other hand, the other
woman, who was the real mother of the baby, was also willing to do everything,
even if it means giving up her child so that the situation will not severely hurt it.
2. What was the mood created by the setting of the story? Describe it.
The story's setting gives the idea that it may have happened a long time ago,
during the ancient era where most places were under the power of the kings and
queens. The mood began very light with the subtle actions of the characters. As
the story proceeds, more and more actions began to intensify the mood up to the
story's climax and resolution.
3. How was the relationship between the characters in the story?
Every character has their unique personalities that justified the plot of the story.
The protagonist is a loving mother and has a good heart because she prefers to
suffer than put her baby in so much pain. The antagonist is also a mother; however,
she became evil because of what happened to her due to her precious baby's

sudden loss. The king is the mediating character that helped resolves the conflicts
that arose between the two mothers.
4. Describe the king and the way he solved the problem of the two women.
The king symbolizes a man of justice. He uses his wisdom to make an unbiased
decision for such a complicated case. Wise people such as him know the true
nature of the situation and the people involved. He based his judgment on how the
two mothers reacted when asked to scramble the baby. The impostor's deception
did not bother him at all because he knows that a birth mother will never put her
child in such hurtful situations.
5. Suppose that you meet these two women; what will your strategy be to
determine the real mother between them.
Suppose I will decide on the verdict that will resolve the conflict between these
two mothers. In that case, I will not let my emotions overrule my judgment. There
must be sufficient pieces of evidence. It is really hard to uncover the truth in
anything, especially if there is deception involved. Any case must undergo a due
process to avoid biases and injustice on the part of the opposing parties.
6. Do you like the ending? Why or why not? What other endings can you
suggest?
I am truly amazed as to how the conflict was resolved in the story. The real
mother deserves to be with her child because her baby needs the genuine love of
the person that brought him/her into life. However, I worry about the punishment
that the impostor will receive. What she did was wrong, but after all, the jury should
consider her sanity at the time of the commission of the fraud. Considering the
setting of the story, she must have to be punished severely. Nevertheless, as time
passed by, people found the real essence of justice to humanity. The ending for
me goes like this:
"The king said: the woman who let go of the baby and allowed the other woman
to get the baby was the real mother as she did it out of pity for the kid. Moreover,
the other woman is not the real mother because she did not show any mercy to
the kid and tried to get the kid by hook or by crook." After saying that, the king

ordered that the impostor be punished by being prohibited from being anywhere
near the baby and her real mother to any baby nearby and must pay for her
sentence. She must be examined for her sanity, and her family must take the
biggest part in ensuring that she will not do anything that will disturb the peace in
their community.
7. What is the life lesson you may get from this story? How does this story
apply to your life?
Genuine love reveals the truth. The story proves how our family, especially our
mother, among the people in the world, has the biggest heart for us, their children.
The first truth that all of us must realize is that our mother is the first person who
loves us wholeheartedly. There may be times when we may think that they are too
hard on us or unreasonable in their decisions. However, we must realize that it is
the true nature of being a mother that is never to allow their child to be in pain as
much as they can. I, myself, had some misunderstandings with my mother before
and even up to date, but at the end of the day, I am her child, and there is only
here for me in this world. In conclusion, we must value them and reciprocate the
love and care they have given us from the time we are born to the last minute of
our lives.
Creating With Them
Think of a K-drama or telenovela or movie that has the same plot of the story
“Two women Scrambled for a baby”. With groups, choose a scene from it and
present it to class. Let your classmates guess the title of it.

for a Baby” is “The World of the Married Couple” Episode 14, specifically in the duration

Create a photo-essay (8R) which is your response to the message of the

story “Two Women Scrambled for a Baby”.
As a response to the message of the story, I can say that only legitimate mothers
are those who truly know and recognize their child. The child, even though he/she cannot
speak as a baby, knows her as well. True mother always show gentle care to her child
and will fight for her own.
