Kara David’s “Ambulansiyang de Paa” is an eye-opener to the harsh realities and

inequalities in the world. It features the marginalized people in remote areas of the country
whose only basic human rights have turned into privileges. Two different stories were
presented–both about indigenous people (IP) in the Philippines–but one similar ending.
Poverty, as a common denominator, hindered them from achieving their needs, wants, and
dreams–crippling them to freely live and be more.

An average person will not realize these injustices that have long lived in society,
especially to the least neighbors, if not for these documentaries and for the blinding privilege
that were graced to most of the people. This is a wakeup call for every single individuals to
appreciate and count all the blessings rather than be disappointed on what it could be, to
always give and help if a person have the means to, and to demand accountability to the people
in power for the misrepresentation and marginalization of the less privileged. Especially in the
advent of technology, simple causes can reach millions in a matter of a click; it is our choice to
be responsible users and advocates of the internet or be slaves and fall into the trap of its
harmful cons. Choose what is right and create rippling positive impacts – this can ultimately
save lives.

As people who are often seen and treated less, the IP community deserves more–livable
life, immediate access to basic needs, fair and equal treatment, and empowerment. It is basic
human decency to treat other people regardless of background, race, or status in life as equals.
However, we, as ordinary individuals, can only do so much; the government should find ways
and act upon those effectively to give the poor their needs and finally cease the nationwide.
Fighting for genuine causes like these should be promoted. As a nation, we can stand up, grow,
and succeed together, with the powerful by our side

Unit 5 Lesson 1

Activity
Using available sources, write the history of your provincial hometown in three paragraphs, with
three to five sentences per paragraph. In a separate paragraph, what pieces of information have you
come to know for the first time? Why? What pieces of information should you also countercheck with
other sources? Why?

Known for their salt making industry and as one of the largest producers of rice in the
country, Pangasinan is the province where a lot of people wanted to be in. It is located in the
Central Luzon region and it is considered as the third biggest province in the whole Philippine
Archipelago. It consists different tourist spot and delicious culinary delights or delicacies.
They have different festivals and one of the famous festivals they have is Bangus Festival in
Dagupan City. Aside from these information, the province’s history is also commendable in a
way that Pangasinan was among the earliest political and administrative units in the
Philippines.

Pangasinan province had also played a major role in Philippine History. As what is
stated earlier, Pangasinan was among the earliest political and administrative units in the
Philippines and it was colonized by D. Martin de Goiti in 1571. Even though it was colonized
by de Goiti, a Spanish priest-historian, Fray Juan Ferrando considers Juan de Salcedo as the
first discoverer of Pangasinan. Salcedo explore and pacify Northern Luzon by the order of his
grandfather Governor General Miguel Lopez de Legazpi until he reaches Pangasinan.

On April 5, 1572, Pangasinan was made an encomienda by the Spanish royal crown to
receive instruction on the Catholic Faith, which means that Pangasinan was organized under
one leadership and has identity before the Spanish royal court. Pangasinan only become a
province after it was organized into a political unit under an alkalde mayor. To
commemorate the day when Pangasinan became an encomienda and the year it became a
province, Pangasinan celebrates April 5, 1580 as the official founding day of the province.

The province, from the past up to the present, continues to contribute to Philippine
society in a variety of ways. From societal changes up to providing the daily needs of the
country, Pangasinan had always proven to be good at doing such a thing. It is both an
important granary of the country and an important cultural center located in the Luzon
Island in this regard. But despite of Pangasinan’s contribution in the country and its
popularity, there are still information about the province that most of the people doesn’t
know even those who consider Pangasinan as their province.

Even though I consider Pangasinan as my province, I didn’t know anything about its
history because we barely visit their and the only thing I know about the province is it is a
land of salt and it has a lot of different beaches and tourist spots. The information about de
Goiti's is totally new to me. I don’t even have any idea that Pangasinan was being colonized
and aside from this it was also considered as one of the earliest political units in the country. I
also don’t know about the discoverer of the province. Because of these new information that
I got, I needed to countercheck them to prove that those facts are real and not just a made
up before. I was proven wrong as certain websites give off the same information, with the
most credible being the province’s dedicated website.
