Direction: Answer the following questions by providing specific examples based on the
documentary film, That Sugar Film (2014) by Damon Garneau.

I. Discuss your ideas on how the overproduction and overconsumption of sugar-based

products potentially prevents humans from achieving eudaimonia? Give at least five ideas to
explain.

 Eudaimonia is good for human life. It involves the individual activities to pursue their own
goal and its purpose with the primary goal of completion being “to achieve the best that is
within us.” It satisfied all the reasons and must be stable however overproduction and
overconsumption of sugar-based products lead us, people, to the opposite side of
eudaimonia. There are several ways in which overproduction and overconsumption of
sugar-based products may prevent humans from achieving eudaimonia. Based on the
documentary, I learned that we didn’t realize that practically everything we consume
contains a significant amount of sugar. We no longer realize that we eat too much sugar,
which is bad for our health and can lead to undesired occurrences; they believe that too
much is bad.

The overproduction and overconsumption of sugar-based products undoubtedly help the

industry because of the massive amount of profit it provides, making the desire to grow,
innovate, and build their business easier to achieve. As the supply of sugar-based products
increases, the demand for consumption is also increased, which is due to the effects of sugar
on human health. Firstly, the fats that are being replaced by the sugar, second, the fructose
that can be converted into fats, large levels of fructose from added sugars are converted to
fat in the liver of persons who are inactive and eat a Western diet. And it is in the liver that
all metabolic diseases begin. and lastly, consumption of low-fat products. Unless the
factories do not sell their sugar-based products, overproduction of sugar-based items must
result in overconsumption of sugar-based products.

II. Is there a need for industries to regulate the production of sugar-based products and for
consumers to reduce their consumption if they are to journey toward the good life
together?
 YES, there is a need to regulate the production of sugar-based products in order to reduce
overconsumption of sugar especially if they are to journey towards a good life. There may
be a need, but some companies have a responsibility to their investors to be successful,
which takes precedence but for some reason, I think the consumers must be also educated,
we, as one of the consumers have the ability to influence the market by sending signals that
create different demands. Governments frequently impose regulations on industries, and
the type of government depends because industry and government will do nothing to
reduce sugar consumption, it is up to the customer to be more aware and purchase goods
with less or no sugar so maybe It will reduce the rate of obesity, prevent people from
different health risks and help them to live a healthy life.
I. How do you see the continuing effect of the movie and your own personal experiences
beyond the film?

II. I think the film itself will still have a great impact on the audience, especially since this film
targeted mostly children, why? It’s because it always started when we are young, if we get
used to the taste of sugar until we grow up, we still look for it. We all know that most people
want a portion of tasty food and most of us like sweet food and we even enjoy it. Eating too
much sugar can hype us, for others it may be their happiness but also remember that eating
too much sugar can contribute to an excess of calories, which can lead to weight gain.
Obesity raises your chance of developing health problems such as heart disease, some
malignancies, and type 2 diabetes.

Damon Gameau started on a one-of-a-kind experiment to study the consequences of a high sugar
diet on a healthy body, consuming only items that are typically considered or advertised as healthy.
This film has a piece of solid information for parents and makes a good point to the others who are
into overconsumption of sugar-based products and its effect on our physical and mental health.
Along the way, Damon highlights some of the issues that plague the sugar industry, as well as where
sugar lurks on supermarket shelves. ‘That sugar film’ will forever alter your perception of healthy
food.

We eat way too much-processed food as a civilization, and as a result, our overall sugar
consumption is simply too high. We may all benefit from making better dietary choices and eating
foods that are more natural and less processed. A lot of the sugar we do consume is 'hidden' in
meals, and we often don't realize it's there. ‘That sugar film’ depicts one man's struggle to learn the
hard truth of sugar. Damon Gameau embarks on a one-of-a-kind experiment to document the
effects of a high sugar diet on a healthy body, consuming only foods that are commonly perceived as
'healthy.
