Most customs and traditions of the Ilocanos are influence by
their frugality. From the cradle to the grave, the Ilocano
rituals reflect what they believe in.

TRADITIONS AND CULTURES GULING-GULING FESTIVAL. Paoay, Ilocos Norte Guling-Guling


Martes May aims to commemorate the 16th century old
practice of the Spanish friars for the religious sector to
interact with its parishioners. It has always been celebrated
on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday.

Most Ilokanos are Roman Catholics, while a significant


number belong to the Aglipayan Church, which originated in
Ilocos Norte. Catholicism in the Philippines combines belief in
patron saints with belief in supernatural forces. Many consult
faith healers for herbal treatments of physical ailments.

The Itawits are noted for their pottery and basket-


weaving traditions. The culture of Cagayan is
showcased in museums, historical buildings and
archeological sites spread across the province.

The SAMBALI FESTIVAL originated from the


Sambali dance which is a war dance of the Itawis
tribe of Cagayan that was converted to Christianity
through the intercession of the Lady of Piat.
TRADITIONS AND CULTURES

The Ybanags, the dominant group, are known to


be the tallest among the ethno-linguistic groups all
over the Philippines. They are know for their
excellence in making seacrafts and blacksmithing.
