Introduction
The English textbook for secondary schools is the sixth in a series of seven textbooks which
are currently developed to respond to the new policy of the Ministry of Education and Sports on
the reform of general education from 11 years to 12 years. Upon the new educational reform, the
Ministry of Education has decided to add another year to the secondary school program in the
academic year 2009-2010. To implement the new policy, the Foreign Language Resource Centre
at the Research Institute for Educational Sciences in cooperation with the Faculty of Letters at the
National University of Laos have formed a team to develop the curriculum and write the textbook
with a teacher’s guide through financial support of the Basic Education Sector Development
Project (BESDP).

Along with the textbook, the teacher’s guide has also been provided in order to help with
more effective teaching. The teacher’s guide includes teaching techniques for each step of the

ດິ
lessons. There are also some instructions on how to use teaching aids and some suggestions for

ະສ
teachers and students on how to create teaching aids for their own classes.

However, the textbook is produced under the time pressure; therefore, some minor errors
could not be avoided. The Foreign Language Resource Centre highly appreciates all comments

ລຂິ
and suggestions from readers and these are considered as a great contribution to the quality
assurance of the textbook as well as to the development of the Lao National Education. The
ວນ
Research Institute for Educational Sciences avails itself of this opportunity to express its sincere
thanks to all contributors.

Dear Chansamone
It was a very big surprise for me when I saw the mail from you.
I must tell you that I am very happy after having read and
answered the mail from a new friend who lives in a far country.
Luang Prabang sounds exciting; I would like to visit you and go
to interesting places in Luang Prabang, but I can’t afford to travel at this
time. As you know, a round- trip ticket from Sidney to Vientiane is quite
expensive. However, I am saving up the money so that I can come to see
you.

Charcoal and beverages are also available at the refreshment centre.

It’s quite convenient to do your own cooking at Tad Moon.

We are also going to wear something that suitable to go swimming. Sport

shoes are also necessary in case we want to take a walk along the river
bank.

I think we have everything that we need and just hope the weather would be
nice on the day of our picnic so we can enjoy the holidays.

Driving to Luang Prabang
Driving to Luang Prabang in Laos is tiring, but interesting to see
views along the road. Luang Prabang is about 350 km. far from
ລຂິ
Vientiane Capital. Most local tourists like to drive to Luang Prabang
ວນ
even though they know the road is hilly and curved that makes them
very tired. On the road from Vientiane Capital, they can see beautiful
ຫງ

Lao old style wooden houses that are not easy to find in other places.
The first mountain, they have to cross is PhouPha where most
passengers stop at the altar site and make their wishes for safe trips.
ສະ

When they go down the other side of Phoupha, they start to take
adventure along narrow, hilly, curved, and sometimes on the cliff road.
However, they can unwind themselves when they arrived to VangVieng

where they can see beautiful mountains and Lao traditional living style
ວ.

of people. Further up to Phoukhoun, they can stop at the famous

restaurant where they can have lunch and see the view with white clouds
ສ.

floating under the level of the restaurant. At Phoukhoun, they can see
ethnic people selling their produce on the roadsides. Kewkacham is also
a good place to stop over to see various life styles of ethnic groups.
From Kewkacham, it will take about two hours to arrive to Luang
Prabang where the stupa on top of Phousy can be seen as a sign they
have arrived Luang Prabang.
Travelling by car to Luang Prabang is tiring, but it is worth to
experience.

Ho Prakeo is one of the
historic buildings and the oldest
temple in Vientiane. It was built in
1560 -1565 by the King
Saysethathirath as a royal temple
and the home of the Emerald
Buddha image. It was destroyed in
1779 and the Emerald Buddha
image was taken away. At that
time, not only Ho Prakeo temple,

Staying healthy in hot weather

Many kinds of diseases are commonly found or occurred in areas
where the weather is hot such as diarrhea, dengue fever and malaria. People
must take precautions of eating, drinking and even clothing. You should
wear cool, light clothes, drink boiled water and eat cooked food.

62

3_Eng_M6 TB ready for print.pdf 69 7/31/2015 9:22:24 AM

Vegetables and unpeeled fruits should be thoroughly washed. Fish and
meat should be well cooked, and you should avoid eating foods that have
been standing for a long time.
If you have diarrhea, you ought to drink a lot of clear liquid, like
water, lemonade or coconut juice. Diarrhea normally lasts about three days
or less. If it lasts longer and the patient starts vomiting or other symptoms
occur, the patient should go to see a doctor.
If you are sensible and careful, you can stay healthy at any time of a
year round.

Fitness maintaining good health.

What does fitness mean? Fitness means to be in good physical

ຫງ

shape and able to get around without becoming breathless. Firstly, to be fit
you must not be overweight. If you are overweight you need to be careful
ສະ

of your diet and avoid excess sugar and food that contains too much fat.

Secondly, it is necessary to exercise regularly. Some people like

farmers or construction workers get enough exercise just through their

ວ.

work. Others do their exercises by walking, cycling, playing football,

ສ.

volleyball, basketball, tennis and swimming. Those activities are all good
forms of exercises. The outdoor ones such as jogging, aerobics, hiking,
mountain climbing and cycling can provide excellent exercises as well.

People who live in crowded cities do not have many choices of

doing their exercises outdoor, so it is more convenient for them to go to a
nearby gym but it does not mean they could not stay fit.

67

3_Eng_M6 TB ready for print.pdf 74 7/31/2015 9:22:24 AM

Therefore, you can see there are many choices to maintain your
fitness. No matter where you are and who you are, you always have the
opportunities to stay fit.

ສ.

Khamtan: Could I ask you a few questions, dad?

Dad: Ok. What could I do to help?
Khamtan: What are the differences between HIV and AIDS?
Dad: HIV is the virus which attacks the T-cells in the immune
system and AIDS is the syndrome which appears in advanced
stages of HIV infection. People who get HIV will develop
AIDS.

83

3_Eng_M6 TB ready for print.pdf 90 7/31/2015 9:22:25 AM

Khamtan: How HIV is transmitted?
Dad: Hmm! HIV can be transmitted in several ways, you can catch
it by sexual contact with an infected person, by sharing
syringes and needles with an infected person, infected mother
can pass the virus to their babies before or during birth, and
babies can get it from their mothers’ milk.
Khamtan: Can we catch it by using the same towels or sharing clothes?
Dad: No, certainly not. We can’t catch HIV from mosquito bites,
sharing public toilets, showers, swimming pools, or saunas
touching and hugging a person who has HIV.

AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is caused by a virus called

the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). People can have the HIV virus
for many years.
Sometimes, they do not know they are infected, and they can infect other
people. Most people who are infected with HIV will develop AIDS.

84

3_Eng_M6 TB ready for print.pdf 91 7/31/2015 9:22:25 AM

Most people who are infected with HIV experience short flu-like illness that
occurs two to six weeks after infection. After this, HIV often causes no
symptoms for several years.
The most common symptoms are: fever, sore throat, a red rash and other
symptoms can include: tiredness, joint pain, muscle pain, chills, sweat,
weakness and loss weight.
HIV is not passed on easily from one person to another. The virus doesn’t
spread through the air like cold and flu viruses. HIV lives in the blood and
in some body fluids. Ways of getting HIV include;
x Sharing needles, syringes and other injecting equipment.
x From mother to baby before or during birth or by breastfeeding.

ດິ
ະສ
x Blood transfusion.
x Sexual contact.

But the virus cannot be transmitted by handshake, hugging, kissing,

sneezing, touching, and sharing the same toilet, swimming pool, towels,

ລຂິ
baths or contact with animals or insects such as mosquitoes.
ວນ
At present there is no cure for AIDS. There are more and more cases of
HIV infection every year, so prevention is very important.
ຫງ

Governments are encouraging all citizens, especially teenagers in all

schools to learn more about HIV and AIDS, how virus can be transmitted

ດິ
ະສ
What is malaria?

Malaria is a life-threatening disease. It is caused by a parasite that is

ລຂິ
passed from one person to another by the bite of infected Anopheles
mosquitoes.
ວນ
After being infected, the parasites travel through the bloodstream up to
ຫງ

the livers, where they become mature and release another form, the
parasites enter the bloodstream and infect red blood cells.
ສະ

There are four different kinds of malaria, but only two of them are
found in Laos. The more serious form is Falciparum Malaria (Or jungle
fever).

ວ.

A person with a serious type of malaria needs to have some medical

treatments very quickly because it can develop itself into the jungle fever
ສ.

that has killed approximately 95% of its victims.

Since 1638, quinine has been used to treat malaria. Quinine is made
from the bark of a tree. In 1945 a new drug, Chloroquine, was developed.
This is much more effective in preventing and treating malaria.

It is important to protect ourselves from malaria; these are some

precautions that we follow:

89

3_Eng_M6 TB ready for print.pdf 96 7/31/2015 9:22:25 AM

xWear long sleeves and cover your legs, especially at night.
x Make sure windows and doors are screened to prevent entry of
mosquitoes into the house.
x Use a bed net while sleeping.
x Spray home and surrounding areas with insecticide to kill mosquitoes.
x Clear out shrubs and weeds around the house where mosquitoes can be
hiding.
Malaria is one of the major causes of death to millions of people around
the world. It could lead to many complications such as; Dengue, paralysis
and coma. So we must get rid of mosquitoes by keeping surrounding areas
clean so that our family and community can be safe.

What is bird flu?
ສະ

Bird flu, avian flu is caused

by a type of influenza virus that is
hosted by birds, and may also infect

several species of mammals. It was

ວ.

first identified in Italy in the early

1900s and is now known to exist
ສ.

worldwide.

Areas of world that have

mainly been affected are Indonesia,
Vietnam, parts of Cambodia, China,
Thailand, and Europe. Strains of avian influenza virus may infect various
types of animals, including birds, pigs, horses, seals, whales and humans.

94

3_Eng_M6 TB ready for print.pdf 101 7/31/2015 9:22:25 AM

Bird flu or avian flu can be
transmitted to humans by eating
uncooked meat from infected birds.
It can also be caught by contact
with their faeces and other bodily
fluids. Infected feathers and
dropping on bird cages may also
contribute to the spread of the virus.

We don’t know whether bird flu

can be passed from person to person. So
far, cases of bird flu have involved people

ດິ
ະສ
working or living with birds, often in very
poor conditions.

The symptoms are similar to those

ລຂິ
of other kinds of flu, such as sore throat,
ວນ
aching muscles, headache, cough and
feverishness. More severe symptoms
include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, eye infections and could ultimately lead
ຫງ

to pneumonia and respiratory failure. One symptom which is seen in many

patients is the infection of the lower respiratory tract. Expert believes that
ສະ

difficulty in breathing develops around five days after the first symptoms.

The precautions that we have to follow always wash your hands

properly before and after handing meat. It is important to make sure that

you wash and clean the meat and eggs properly and cook it so that the virus
ວ.

can’t survive. If you’ve flu-like symptoms you should go to the hospital

immediately because unlike seasonal flu the disease has a much higher
ສ.

fatality rate.

Laos-climate and seasons

Laos is a tropical region in Southeast Asia. The climate is generally

hot and humid. There are two seasons in Laos – the dry season and the wet
season (or rainy season). The dry season begins in November and ends in
April. The wet season begins in May and ends in October.

ດິ
ະສ
The average temperature and rainfall are varied in different parts of
Laos according to latitude and altitude. In the lowland the average daytime
temperature is high – around 25oC all year round. The coolest months are

December and January, where temperature could drop to 15oC in most parts
ວນ
of the country, in Xiengkhouang could easily drop to 0oC during night time.
March and April are the hottest months; temperature could reach 38oC,
especially in the south. During most of the rainy season, the average
ຫງ

daytime temperature is around 29oC in the lowland, and around 25oC in the
highlands.
ສະ

The driest time of year is in March and May. During this time there
is a little rainfall. The wettest month of year is in August. Rainfall is very

variable in different parts of the country. The mountainous areas have more
rain than the lowland areas. The annual rainfall could be as high as 3,900

A tip for writing: In writing a paragraph, writers should be aware of

its three important components such as: (a topic sentence, details or main
body, and concluding sentence)
1. Topic sentence = topic +main or key ideas (not more than three ideas the
maximum).
2. Main body = the explanation of each key idea. (this part of writing will
need to use signal words to link reasons or results), like

ດິ

Mother and Child Health in Laos
ສະ

The maternal mortality rate in Laos is among the highest in the

region. In Laos, the maternal mortality rate is about 470 death per 100,000
live births. Today, the Lao government takes mother and child care as the

first priority task in the area of public health. Almost all villages in Laos
ວ.

now have access to health care centre. However, some villages in remote
areas still have no access to health care centre. The Ministry of Public
ສ.

Health is now planning to establish health care centre for all villages.
In conjunction with the mother health care, the government of Laos
pays more attention to the child health care because the infant mortality rate
or child mortality rate is also high among the age group of under 5. It is
about 98 per 1000 live births. To improve infant mortality rate, the
Ministry of Health stresses on immunization and vaccination against
diseases for every child. In the near future, the maternal and infant
mortality rates will be reduced to a certain level.

respective countries.
ສະ

However, all ASEAN member countries have set some collective

slogans known as “one vision, one identity, one community” and “a unity in

diversity”. To make the communication among member countries easy, the

ASEAN leaders have decided to use English language as working language
ວ.

for communicating among member countries.

ສ.

There are a number of conferences, workshops, trainings, and

seminars of different levels of government officials each year. In addition,
more activities have been organized like cultural exchange, SEA games,
and ASEAN Youth Camp. The ASEAN Youth Camp aims to help young
people from all countries in the region to meet, work together and learn
about their diverse cultures and histories, toward greater solidarity and
mutual understanding for the establishment of a strong ASEAN
Community.
