SUBJECT: Activity 2: Life and Works of Rizal

ACTIVITY 2.1
In 5-10 sentences, answer the following questions.

1. How much do you know the characteristics of Dr. Jose P. Rizal? Is this man truly an
exceptional person? Elaborate your answer.
 Jose Rizal is an amazing man with enormous aspects of greatness. He is
intelligent, hardworking and see things objectively. Jose wanted for
independence from Spain in the Philippines, so that Filipinos would not be ruled
by another country. Helping his country is way much important than himself. Rizal
has an exceptional intelligence as he’s a poet, writer, novelist, essayist,
ophthalmologist, teacher, urban planner, agriculturist, linguist, orator, sportsman,
lover, and patriot.

2. In your own opinion, what do you think of our present and future condition as a nation or
country without Dr. Jose P. Rizal? How significant is the life and works of Rizal in
shaping our destiny as a sovereign nation?
 Without Dr. Jose Rizal's influence on the people, I believe our country would still
be colonized by another country. People would still be in misery as a result of
their lack of freedom, courage to fight, and lack of understanding of in different
aspects including in modern agricultural methods, scientific fishing, bricking
processes, and the formation of cooperatives to break the Chinese trade
monopoly in town. We won’t have the nation we have today if it wasn’t the help of
Rizal. It could take more years for the Philippines attain freedom if Rizal didn’t
have the courage and actions. Moreover, his works also helped to reawaken
Philippine nationalism. It is to widen our educational perspectives, and Rizal is a
crucial figure in Philippine history. His writings are said to have inspired the
country's desire for independence. He was the one who led the Filipinos to revolt
against the Spanish government in order to gain independence and control of the
country. As a result of this, other Filipinos were inspired to seek independence.
Our country's basic and long-term needs have now been enhanced and
safeguarded.

3. Among your friends, family or love once, who will you consider a hero? And Why?
 The one that I consider as a hero is my dad. He may not be a perfect dad for us
but he will do everything just to provide our needs and wants. He’s my definition
of a hero as he is willing to share and don’t hesitate to offer a helping hand to
whoever in needs. He may not vocal and failed to say his feelings towards us but
he never fails to show and express his love and care through his actions. That’s
what makes him a hero, by expressing his endless love, care and support for us
that he will do everything for the sake of our happiness.

4. In your own opinion, what is the most important qualification of a hero?

 The most important qualification of a hero is being brave, courageous,
determined, hardworking, self-sacrifice, the one with a good heart and be able to
make changes. Brave and courageous to face all opportunities even if you don’t
know its outcome. Determined and positive that he/she will going to make it.
Hardworking and self-sacrifice that he/she will think more of what made him/her
do that than him/herself. Having a good heart that will lead him/her to have a
better relationship onto others. Lastly, a person who’s be able to make changes,
a better change for everyone.

5. According to various Philippine presidents, the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) are
the present day heroes? Using the criteria presented in this reading, are they worthy of
being called heroes? Justify your answers.
 Yes, I do believe that they are worthy enough to be called heroes. They are brave
and courageous enough to work abroad to earn money to sustain the needs of
their family. Disconnection from their family is one of their greatest sacrifices:
they are unable to attend their children's birthday parties, care for sick parents, or
attend their funerals. They are the one who endure the loneliness. They
experienced all the hardships, be it physical, mental and emotional but because
of their determination and hard work, they also contribute to country’s economy
and development through their remittances. They sacrifice their selves upon
working abroad in order to provide a better life for their respective families.

6. Compost your own criteria of a “HERO”.

Criteria Percentage (%)
Selflessness 30%
Self-sacrifice 30%
Bravery 25%
Courageous 15%

7. In your own opinion, do you think that the Rizal course is still a relevant subject in our
present time? And Why?
 Yes, for me, Rizal course will always be essential. It was our old mirror that had
helped shaped us into the people we are now. It is significant because it
reminded us of his contribution to the Philippines' freedom. Rizal chose to fight for
his country through the power of letters and knowledge. It could be a key for us to
have a knowledge on how to fight using your mind because we don’t know what
future holds. Knowing the life of our hero is like knowing on how to be a Filipino.

8. What is your personal stand regarding the approval of the “Rizal Law”? What is the
relevance of this law in our nation building?
 The approval of Rizal Law requires all Philippine educational institutions to offer
the Rizal courses. Its aim is to be reminded of Jose Rizal’s enormous
contributions and role for achieving the nation’s freedom lead to the
implementation of the Rizal law. His never-ending efforts to persuade his fellow
compatriots to work together for national unity, which is a need for national
existence. As a result, he emphasizes the need of education, fostering racial
pride and dignity in the people, promoting national consciousness, reorienting
values and attitudes, and willingness to sacrifice for the country in his plan for
nation building. Rizal law is a law founded on the ideas of a Filipino man who
wants to encourage people especially youth to be better citizens. Any man who
refuses to confront injustice is not a good citizen.

ACTIVITY 2.2 Judgement

In 5-10 sentences, what is your JUDGEMENT and why?

Where will you stand on the following issues? Church or Government

1. Death Penalty
 The implementation of the death penalty has been a source of debate for many
years. Many people are in favor of capital punishment, while others are against it.
Supporters of the death sentence argue that it deters crime, while opponents
argue that it is ineffective and unethical. When considering such issues, society
should examine legislation rather than religion or personal ideas, in my opinion.

The death sentence is a legal sanction, and as such, it should be judged on its
merits as a deterrence to crime rather than on religious or personal principles.
The law can be applied equitably to all persons and changed as new evidence
becomes available without causing much controversy. Those who reject death
punishment, on the other hand, may do so on personal or religious grounds
because they cannot change their minds about taking another person's life. This
means that even if new evidence supporting capital punishment is offered, these
people will continue to oppose it, even though they have no good reason to do
so. Finally, I feel that laws should be considered when making critical decisions
such as capital penalty because laws are based on evidence and experience,
whereas religion and personal opinions are frequently biased in some way.

2. Divorce
 Divorce is always a difficult decision to make, but it is often the best solution
when dealing with two individuals who simply cannot get along. With that said, I
think that the state has a greater stand on divorce than the church. Divorce can
be the light at the end of the torturous tunnel that was a broken marriage in cases
of physical, mental, emotional, and sexual abuse. Children are also not immune
to these negative happenings and should never be forced to stay in a situation
where their safety and wellbeing is at risk. Divorce is also necessary when two
married people simply do not love each other any longer. There is no point in
forcing two people to stay together for reasons having nothing to do with love or
even friendship; there really is no need for anyone to make life miserable for
themselves or anyone else by staying in an unhappy relationship. The only time
where I would agree with the Church being on board with divorce would be if it
was absolutely necessary for survival or if one of those types of abuse situations
were present. Otherwise, divorce should be up to the state.

3. Legality of Same Sex Marriage

 We live in a time where we have more freedom than before. We have the
freedom to do whatever we want, to select what we want in life and to live the life
we desire. It's alright to legalize same-sex marriage since we live in a world
where we have our own freedom. Freedom to choose and follow what we want.
In this case, I will stick to my stance that we should be able to express ourselves
freely regardless of the circumstances. We shouldn't hinder someone from loving
whom they choose, simply because we want our views to be recognized. For
instance, a lot of people say that it opposes on the teachings of the bible that only
men and women can do such thing. However, you may be men and women but
you can’t have the real meaning of happiness, then it’s useless. As a result, it is
up to the state to allow for the legalization of same-sex marriage and consider
each individual's happiness.
