Gibraltar has issued a royal coin set featuring several firsts, including a portrait of Queen Elizabeth
II in front of the Rock of Gibraltar. The reverse of all three Gibraltar silver royal coins displays the Gov-
ernment of Gibraltar’s coat of arms, combining the coat of arms of the U.K. government with that of
Gibraltar. The second coin features the coat of arms in colour (the first coloured coin in Gibraltar his-
tory) and the third coin has a one-point natural diamond encrusted into the knight’s helmet, also a
first. The obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. It is the first coin to depict the Queen in
rallying cry front of the Rock of Gibraltar. The coins are 37 millimetre in diameter, have a fineness of .999 and

Aug. 4, 1914 was greeted with widespread enthusiasm and
jubilation across the empire, although those sentiments were
soon dulled as the casualties mounted and the purpose of the
conflict was questioned. In Australia, it was a chance for the
fledgling nation to prove itself in battle and to rally to the
cause. The coin’s reverse features a group of soldiers marching
underneath a representation of Britannia holding her trident,
and wearing a Corinthian helmet, symbolic of British liberties
and democracy. The inscription “1914 – When the Empire is at
War, so is Australia at War,” a red poppy motif and the Perth
Mint’s “P” mint mark are also incorporated into the design.
The coin’s obverse depicts the Rank-Broadley effigy of the
Queen, the year-date, the monetary denomination and the
coin’s weight (31.135 grams) and fineness. With a maximum
mintage of 7,500, and struck by the Perth Mint from one ounce
of 99.9 per cent silver in Proof quality, the coin is issued as le-
gal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965. For more

double Honour for baby
The Royal Mint has struck a prestigious double-sovereign, usually only available to distinguished
coin collectors, in honour of the first birthday of Prince George of Cambridge. To celebrate the special
occasion, the Royal Mint released 1,300 double-sovereigns as a single coin struck to Brilliant Uncircu-
lated standard, the first time a double-sovereign of this striking has been made available as a single
coin rather than as part of a set. The sovereign bears the famous St. George and the dragon design,
created almost 200 years ago by renowned engraver Benedetto Pistrucci. The obverse features the ef-
figy of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley. The coin is struck from 22-karat gold, weighs 15.97
grams and has a diameter of 28.4 mm. For more information, visit royalmint.com.
lucky Pig
Coin Invest Trust proves once again that coins come in all shapes and sizes, and for many purposes with its re-
cent release, from Liechtenstein, for Palau. The coin is shaped like a pig’s silhouette, with the obverse and reverse
showing the animal from front and back, respectively. It is minted from .999 gold and part of a popular series featur-
featur
ing unusually shaped coins. The obverse design features the pig’s ears, eyes, snout and mouth. A four-leaf clover is
engraved in the mouth of the laughing pig. The reverse has a matte finish. The centre shows the coat of arms of the is- is
suing state, Palau, together with the official state name, Republic of Palau, and the nominal value of $1. With a mintage of
15,000 pieces, the coin weighs half a gram and has a diameter of 11 mm.
