The first discovered asteroids were assigned the iconic symbols traditionally used

to designate planets. [twenty two]

In 1851, after the 15th asteroid Eunomia was discovered, Johann Franz his Encke
made major changes to his 1854 edition of the Berlin Astronomical Yearbook (BAJ).
He introduced the traditional symbol for stars, the disk (circle), as a common
symbol for asteroids. They were then numbered in order of discovery to denote
specific asteroids. The convention of numbered circles was quickly adopted by
astronomers, and the next discovered asteroid (16 Psyche, 1852) was the first
asteroid so classified at the time of its discovery. However, Psyche also received
a symbolic symbol, as did several other asteroids discovered in the years that
followed. In 37 no iconic symbols were created after the fides were discovered.[a]
