Only asteroid 4 Vesta, with its relatively reflective surface, is usually visible

to the naked eye. 4 Vesta can be seen in the dark sky from a good position. On rare
occasions, small asteroids passing near Earth can be briefly visible to the naked
eye.[3] As of April 2022, the Minor Planet Center holds data on 1,199,224 asteroids
in and around our solar system. There was enough information to number about
614,690 of them. [Four]

Discovery of Ceres
In 1772, German astronomer Johann Erath Bode published (now discredited) a
numerical matrix known as the Titius-Bode law, citing Johann Daniel Titius. With
the exception of an unexplained gap between Mars and Jupiter, Bode's formula
appeared to predict the orbits of the known planets.[5][6] He suggested the
existence of "missing planets". I wrote the following explanation for

This latter point seems to follow particularly from the surprising relationship
observed by the six known planets at their distance from the Sun: Given that the
distance from the Sun to Saturn is 100, Mercury is from the Sun to her four parts
separated by Venus has 4 + 3 = 7, Earth has 4 + 6 = 10 and Mars has 4 + 12 = 16.
Mars is followed by 4 + 24 = 28 parts of space where no planets are yet visible.
Can you believe that the originator of the universe left this space empty?
Certainly not. From here, to Jupiter he is 4 + 48 = 52 parts, and finally to Saturn
he is 4 + 96 = 100 parts [7].
Near-Earth asteroids could threaten all life on Earth. Asteroid impacts led to the
Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction. Various strategies have been proposed to deflect
asteroids. The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft was launched in
2021 and deliberately crashed into Demorphos in September 2022, successfully
crashing and altering its trajectory.
