Report of field Work

The data collection started on aa good not on arriving at the psychiatric hospital in Akure to
notify the CMD about the commencement, he asked for a letter of undertaken which we
promised to send to him once the researcher send it. He introduced us to Mrs.Amuda who is a
clinical psychologist at the facility. He assisted us in getting health workers. One social worker,
two clinical psychologist and 3 nurses were interviewed. They were able to attended to us
properly and questions were probed as good as we can.
We were also able to meet and interview parents of users as they were introduced to us through
the facility. A major challenge in doing this was that most parents were not opened to questions
which made the interview short. There are about 3 parents who were crying as the interview was
going on. We have to end the interview as we can proceed. Some parents were also no truthful in
their response as they try to shield their wards as a user. They then pass it to another close family
relatives. Also, few parents were not too open to questions as they felt embarrassed in answering
the questions raised.
On the interview with parents non users, though it was easy to access this set of parents they felt
embarrassed in answering question on drug abuse. In most cases they really don’t know much
about the existence of a psychiatric hospital in their state, and when they know they re ignorant
of cases that they treat at the hospital.
Overall. We concluded that parents are not aware of their ward’s usage if drugs and when they
are aware they tend to shield such ward
