between schools and parents, students, and
the community. Websites were among the
first tools that schools and districts used to
communicate with the general public.
While many would not consider them social
media sites, per se, they were generally a
school’s first foray into internet-based
communication.
It has only been in recent years that
districts have begun using more popular
sites like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube
for educational purposes. Hays describes
the use of Facebook groups as one of the
early usages of social media for education.
The benefits, as she explains, is that they
offer study groups, classes, or personalized
learning networks (PLNs) as a means to
realize Facebook's promise of collaboration,
engagement, and creativity ~ all in a
private, controlled setting (Hays, 2011).
Twitter soon followed, first used by
educators as a means to communicate with
other educators, and quickly being used by
districts as a way to distribute information
to parents and the community.
As Facebook's user base began to shift from
college-age students to parents and
middle-age adults, districts began to adapt
education system,
as well as proper
application and
benefits of using it.

their methods. Facebook allows community
members to stay current on sports, cultural
events, and academic achievements (Hays,
2011). Instagram, used more by students
than their parents, can help connect with
their age group. YouTube allows not only
the sharing of district-produced videos
with the public, but can help showcase
projects created by the students
themselves.
Hays goes on to explain that educators
themselves recognized that social media
has changed how we interact in almost all
facets of life, and many have shifted their
focus to understand how to exploit these
tools in an equally dynamic educational
landscape (2011). These practitioners
understand how to harness the power of
social media to work in the classroom in
controlled, productive ways.
