PERSONAL STATEMENT

SARPONG LINDA AFRIYIE

01/07/2018

I was born in a developing nation, Ghana-West Africa, to a family of five. My family, friends, the
environment and how society is structured in this part of the world also became huge
component in my decision to pursue higher education. I was fortunate to at least get a roof
over my head, daily meal, fluctuating electricity and water supply as a result of my parent’s
hard work. It was not until my parents took me to where they grew up that I felt a sense of
responsibility not only to myself but to the entire world especially in poverty-stricken areas
with, poor amenity supply, and disastrous educational system. I began having deep thoughts
about what I can do to cause a positive and lasting impact in such deprived communities. Then
came my decision to pursue Science and its integrated courses.
Truthfully, there are some difficulties I face each day including financial, social, and educational
issues, but the desire, and determination instilled in me greatly upholds my tenacity to
overcome these daily obstacles with zeal and an overcoming mindset. My academic
achievement, willingness to learn, team playing ability, and focused mindset secured.
Throughout my life time, I have developed an innate passion to achieve excellence in whatever
I endeavor to do not only for myself and my aspirations, but also to honor the sacrifices my
family and friends have made to bring me to the heights I am at now.
Attending college has always been a dream for my entire family. My parents dreamt about it, my
siblings continue to dream about it and I am prepared to realize this dream with zeal and dedication.
Being privileged to have a family that supports me in every way of my educational journey, they have
instilled in me the true meaning of life, the joys, hardships and inconsistencies of life. Knowing these
valuable insights of life, I believe I am well equipped to face every situation that I am faced with.
With the desire to cause positive change and influence lives in my community as well as touching lives
globally, my interest in the Sciences arose as a result of some very personal experiences. I have made it
a goal to be a medical doctor, why? Looking back at where my parents grew up and the level of
“improvements and development” that have occurred is very appalling, There is practically no change
according to the account of my parents: health, educationally and amenity wise, the community remains
stagnant in progress.
I succeed because it is what I want, I have always been a diligent student that priorities family and
academics over everything else. I have been greatly involved in many clubs in my school. I believe it is
my duty not only to succeed academically, but also my extracurricular activities to mentor and provide
advice to my peers in order to motivate others to do the best they can do. As much, I hope to attend
college and obtain a degree in Biology with a concentration in Pre- medicine, the degree will also serve
as a beacon to promote higher education in underprivileged communities.
With the opportunity of offering me a spot of admission in your esteemed school, I believe it will set the
initial stage for the realization of my dreams and aspirations aiding me to be a competent and visionary
leader as in the mission statement of the school.
