SEGREGATE YOUR WASTE!
This game is called "segregate your waste," and it is
about properly sorting your garbage into the
appropriate trashbins.

Group 7 Game
GAME MECHANICS:
• When the host mentions a specific name of a waste, you will
determine whether it is biodegradable, non-biodegradable,
recyclable, or hazardous waste.

• Type the correct answer in the chatbox with your surname.

(Example: Calangian-Hazardous)

• The first three individuals who get the correct

answer will be recorded as part of their recitation.

Recall: Types of Waste
•BIODEGRADABLE - the ability for a material to be broken down naturally by the
organisms in an ecosystem.

•NON-BIODEGRADABLE - a kind of substance which cannot be broken down by

natural organisms and acts as a source of pollution.

•RECYCLABLE - waste that can be used to produce new goods by changing their
form in the process so that they are no longer
recognizable as waste.

•HAZARDOUS - waste that has substantial or potential

threats to public health or the environment.

People’s Behavior
towards Waste
Behavior is a key cultural aspect that is embedded in
people’s way of life. Studying a community’s
behavior and introducing new ones requires
intensive, long term, and creative social marketing.
This can be done by studying the demographic and
cultural fiber of the community through immersions
and capacity building activities.
Page 03
The Resources, Environment and Economics Center for
Studies, Inc.’s (REECS) 2002 study on household waste
management systems and the attitudes and behavior
showed that:

01 Waste management is still perceived by many as the

responsibility of government.

02 Public participation in waste management, especially in

segregation at source, remains limited.

03 More extensive awareness- raising activities and training

on ecological waste management are needed, together
with stricter enforcement of the Law and local
ordinances must be observed.

04 There is lack of community empowerment and political

will to resolve the problem.

Thermoplastics, which account for 87 percent of plastics sold,
are the most recyclable form of plastics because they can be
remelted and reprocessed, usually with only minor changes in
their properties.
Thermoplastic resins are commonly used in consumer
packaging applications:

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)

01 is used extensively in rigid containers, particularly
beverage bottles for carbonated beverages and
medicine containers.

High-density polyethylene (HDPE)

02 is used for rigid containers, such as. milk and water
jugs, household-product containers, and motor oil
bottles

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
03 is a tough plastic often used in construction and
plumbing. It is also used in some food, shampoo, oil,
and household-product containers.

Low-density polyethylene (LDPE)

04 is often used in films and bags.

Polypropylene (PP)
05 is used in a variety of areas, from yogurt containers
to battery cases to disposable diaper linings. It is
frequently interchanged for polyethylene or
polystyrene.

Polystyrene (PS)
06 is best known as a foam in the form of cups,
trays, and food containers. In its rigid form, it is used
in cutlery

of resins and are most commonly used for
squeezable bottles (for example, for ketchup).

Environmental Concerns
The industry is researching new technologies that promise to increase the quality of plastics produced from recycled materials
and that will allow the mixing of different plastics.

Opponents of the switch argue that polystyrene can be recycled into useful products, such as insulation boards or playground
equipment. They further argue that using paper means cutting forests and that since the paper used to wrap the food is coated
with wax, it cannot be recycled.

In the 1990s, McDonald's Corporation announced it would switch from polystyrene to paper for packaging its food products.

While the plastics used in packaging are recyclable, the technology to do so differs from plastic to plastic. Unless the demand
for recycled products keeps pace with the growing supply, recycling programs will face an uncertain future. Until such
technology is developed, the separation of different plastics before recycling will be necessary. Is using paper to wrap fast-food
better for the environment than using polystyrene? In other words, a milk container is likely to be high-density polyethylene
(HDPE), while an egg container is a polystyrene

Advocates for the switch say that polystyrene takes up space in landfills and does not decompose. The stepped-up commitment
to recycling in many developed nations has produced a glut of certain materials on the market. Since each type has its chemical
makeup, different plastics cannot be recycled together.

facilities in Metro Manila
The environment department’s Environmental Management Bureau (EMB)
plans to put up more waste recycling facilities for Metro Manila's over
1,700 barangays.

The EMB joined the annual International Coastal Clean-Up Day themed
“Trash-free Manila Bay.

Recycling is among the strategies promoted under the Solid Waste

Management Act, or Republic Act 9003, to reduce the volume of waste
for disposal while providing people livelihood.

II. QUESTIONS
A. How does your community/ city deal with
solid waste, MSW?

B. What barriers exist that might make it

difficult to implement that solid waste
management?

B. Can you reduce solid waste production at

your area or city?
If yes, How? - If no, why not?
