Name: Hafak Menaul

Maker/Origin:Women of T'boli of Lake Sebu, South Cotabato

Brief Story:Like any other T'nalak fabric, Hafak Menaul is perceived as sacred since it represents the
T'boli's uniqueness and identity as an indigenous people. It also represents birth, life, union in marriage, and
death. Its pattern has been bestowed by the spirit of abaca namely "Fu Dalu"through the dreams of few
chosen maidens of T'boli.The granted T'boli women will be often called "dreamweavers"
.Description of its Geometric Pattern/Design: T’nalak is produced through a laborious intensive process,
also known as kedungon,consisting of a range of skills learned from a young age by the women of the tribe.
The abaca fiber from the abaca tree and natural vegetable dyes are used as the primary fiber for weaving
and stain. The T'nalak follows a tri-color scheme where: White is used for the pattern;
Red signifies the relief elements; and
Black (often deep brown) for the background Its dreamy pattern features a soaring Philippine eagle
where it has been signified using repetitive hexagons interconnected to one another through lines.

Brief Story:The T'nalak is considered as a sacred cloth woven bygranted women of T'boli, referred as
"dream weavers". They believed that the women design the patterns from dreams orby mental images
through the guidance of "Fu Dalu". "FuDalu" is a spirit guardian who guides T'nalak weaving, a process that
is enriched with taboo and ritual. They also believed that the T'nalak is associated with spirit since there is
variety of traditions surrounding its production and use. Hence, the T'nalak weavings are traditional
properties exchanged during the time of marriage or used as a covering during giving of birth to ensure a
safe delivery.

Description of its Geometric Pattern/Design: T’nalak is produced through a laborious intensive process
