The basic electrolytic experiment, shown with material transport
directions.
The dominating reaction can be inferred from the following
Current flow from electrode to electrolyte : Oxidation (Loss of e-)
Current flow from electrolyte to electrode : Reduction (Gain of e-)

Metal cation leaving into the electrolyte or joining the metal
a) Find the concentrations of Na+ , K + and Cl − in the first and second compartments.
Using Goldman-Hodgkin-Katz equation:o

mmol
1: 10 mmol NaCl + 1mmol KCl in liter → [Na+ ]1 = 10, [K + ]1 = 1, [Cl − ]1 = 11 liter
mmol
2: 1 mmol NaCl + 10mmol KCl in liter → [Na+ ]2 = 1, [K + ]2 = 10, [Cl − ]2 = 11 liter

c) Assume that the membrane is equally permeable to Cl − and Na+ . Find V1 − V2 at
rest.

Either of both electrodes malfunctions when the AgCl layer becomes completely
depleted, i.e., 0.1 mmol of AgCl dissociates.
TTotal = F · 0.1 mmol/I = 100 · 0.1/0.1 = 100s
Polarity determines which of the two electrodes will malfunction.
b) Now one of the two electrodes is inserted in one of the cells in the culture. When a
pharmacological agent is introduced to block all sodium channels, the voltage
measured between this electrode and the other electrode remaining in the saline
environment is Vcell − Vsaline = −60mV . What does that tell about Nernst potentials
of the cell, and ion concentrations inside the cell? Explain.
Cells are impermeable to K + → PK = 0
All Na channels are blocked → PNa = 0
[Cl − ]cell
Vcell − Vsaline = 26 ln [Cl − ]saline
= ECl = −60mV

[Cl − ]
cell = 10
[Cl − ]saline
= 0.015m/liter for Cl − .
Nothing can be said for Na+ and K + .
